Chapter 41: End of Match
The whole room fell silent as Fat Bitch lay sprawled on the floor of the ring. The crowd stared at the scene before them, as if they couldn't believe what had happened. Before I knew it, the announcer dashed into the ring and raised my hand in the air.
"And the winner of the first match of the night… Whimsical Clown!"
His words rippled through the silent space. The announcer's declaration pierced through the disbelief, and soon a wave of cheers tore through the room. I did my best to taunt and entertain the crowd until I had to leave the ring for the next match to begin.
It took five men to drag my opponent out of the ring and toss him aside so he wouldn't get in the way. I pushed through the crowd and headed into the locker room. At the same time, Yuki came up from behind me and tossed my shirt over my head.
"Who. The hell. Are you?" she asked.
I brushed her off and continued to the locker room.
"What do you mean?"
"Don't give me that! I saw you out there; it was like you were a different person!"
"You sound crazy."
"Maybe I am, because there's no way the virgin who hangs game posters of naked women inside his room just beat a 300-pound boxer bloody in front of a crowd."
"Because there's no way he did."
This time, I could see a vein popping out of her forehead. She looked ready to argue, but just then, Chris showed up and draped his hand across my shoulder from behind.
"Great match today, kid! The boss wants to see you." He flashed a smile, showcasing the silver teeth in his mouth. He looked like he was on cloud nine; he was definitely happy about something. "I'll guide you along. You did a great job taming him, Yuki, so take the night off."
Yuki pouted and shifted her gaze from Chris's teasing.
Chris led me outside the building. There was a black limousine waiting across the street. Chris nudged me towards it, so I approached the vehicle. I knocked on the window, and then I heard a crisp sound as the door popped opened immediately.
Before I stepped in, I gazed inside. I needed to be sure of what I was getting into. The only person inside was Faye. She was wearing a long red dress that hugged her curves perfectly. She had an exotic beauty about her. Her cherry-red lips curved into a smile when she saw me.
"Get in," she said, playing with the bottle of wine in her hands.
Inside the limousine was spacious. The leather couch seat felt like heaven against my skin. I sat facing Faye. She had a bottle of wine in her hand, but the air of elegance she exuded quickly faded when she began drinking straight from the bottle.
I watched her, feeling a bit surprised.
"You did well in your match tonight; I was surprised," she said after taking a sip.
"Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed watching me fight."
"Yes, I made a lot of money betting on you."
Her words caught me by surprise.
"You bet on me? Why?"
Everyone was certain I would lose tonight, so why would she risk all that money to bet on me?
"One thing you should know about me, Liam, is that I'm a great judge of character. Plus, I would say I have great intuition. My intuition told me you would win so I placed a bet on you," she said, her piercing gaze staring into my soul. She then reached into her purse and took out a brown paper bag. "Here."
"What's this?" I asked.
Faye smiled amusingly.
"It's your reward. A thousand dollars for winning your match."
A thousand dollars? That was a fourth of what the average salaryman makes in a month. To make this much in one night… I could help my mother with bills. Maybe she wouldn't have to work those long hours anymore, and she could spend more time with Thalia.
Maybe underground fighting wasn't as bad as it seemed.
"Thank you," I said, bowing my head in gratitude.
After she gave me the money, I took it as a cue to leave, so I exited the vehicle. The moment I stepped out, it drove off. I stared at the brown paper bag in my hand, and in that moment, I decided to do something with it.
Just then, I spotted Yuki across the street. She walked with her hands in the pockets of her jacket. It looked like she was heading home, but her expression seemed a little downcast. I called out to her before crossing the street to meet her.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I wanted to thank you for that tip you gave me about my opponent's knee and also for everything else."
Yuki was knowledgeable. She knew a lot about Firefly District and the gang I was caught up in. If I could get her help and cooperation, it would be extremely valuable. For that reason, I decided to split my earnings with her 50/50. I remembered how she didn't have cab fare to go home, so I knew she needed the money.
I reached into the paper bag, counted out $500, and handed it to her.
"This is your share of the profit."
"My share?" She looked at me, confused. "What do you mean?"
"You helped me a lot today. When you tried to warn me about how dangerous my opponent is and when you gave me information about his injury. I'll have a lot of tough fights from now on, but with your help, it will be a lot easier. You don't have to worry; it's not charity. It's more of a partnership: you help me out in any way you can, and I'll split the earnings with you 50/50 when I win."
"Y-You mean that?"
She was still a bit hesitant, so I grabbed her hand and placed the money in her palm. Her face flushed pink as she stared at me with a bewildered expression before a smile bloomed on her face.
"Thank you! I'll help. I mean, be your partner." she stammered.
I smiled at her and patted her on the head which elicited a frown from her.
"I'm happy to hear it. Well, good night."
Satisfied, I wished her goodbye and then walked off. The memory of tonight's fight surfaced in my mind, and I couldn't help but feel happy. Just then, I saw Chris, locked in a passionate hug with a woman as he got ready to send her off in a cab. I couldn't see the woman's face as her back was turned to me, but when she finally turned around to enter the cab, I was left in shock.
"Ms. Dalton?"
