Chapter 70: Quasi Demon
The man was a tall, handsome dude with blonde hair and ocean-blue eyes; the woman beside him was petite, with jet-black hair and eyes that stared into one's soul.
When they came out of the room, the man turned around and grabbed at something, and right there space was torn slowly, revealing an amber glowing light behind it.
"This way," he said.
Silva was stunned to see space torn that way, but he kept his calm and walked through it first. He stepped out into a massive white circular hall.
The soft scent of flowers reached his nose; the waft of the hall hugged his skin. The walls were made of beautiful, shiny white marble, similar to the ones on the floor. There were no windows, yet the air flowed perfectly and the entire hall was illuminated.
At the center sat a large white marble table, surrounded by white chairs.
A man sat down at the table, wearing the same suit as the other two, but he had white hair and glasses. He looked up as they walked in; a slight smile formed on his face.
Silva didn't know why, but standing and looking at that man made him a little uneasy, and he couldn't tell what it was.
The other two walked to the table and also took their seats beside the man. The man looked at Elena.
"Lady Elena, it's been a while. I am happy to see you. Have you thought about the offer Gia extended? You are meant to be a chosen." the man spoke, adjusting his glasses slightly.
His voice was calm and warm, but Silva could hear a distinct tone of someone who was a snake behind a mask.
"That's not what we are here for, Luke, so drop it," Elena said.
"Come in, Elena; your goals align with us, to make sure humanity is safe," Luke said.
"Our goals may align, but that doesn't mean I will become a chosen just like that. My heart isn't here, regardless of what you or Gia says," she replied.
"You can run from it, but you can't really escape. You and Gia are similar; you are like a daughter to her, and you know it," Luke said.
When Elena heard that, her hands twitched and there was a spike in her heartbeat. Silva noticed it; he wondered what could have triggered that — all he said was that she was like a daughter.
"Enough of the idle chatter, Luke; let's get down to the reason why you called us here," she said, not wanting to talk further on the issue.
"Sigh." Luke looked at her with sad eyes. "Have a seat then," he said.
She nodded and walked to the chair. Silva and Lily followed behind her and sat down as well.
"The first thing I want us to talk about is the being you fought in the desert. You were ambushed by what we already know is the cult, and despite the fact you fought well, some managed to escape because they watched from a distance.
"As for the thing you fought, you might already know what it is, it is a—"
"Demon," Elena completed the sentence, looking at Luke. "It wasn't just strong; it possessed the healing factor of an orc, or even better.
"It has the strength of a normal S-ranked monster at the very least," she said, looking at Luke as she spoke.
"Well, yeah, it is strong, demons are strong, but what you met was no demon, well, not in a full sense," Luke said.
"Huh? So what was it?" Lily asked.
"A quasi-demon," the lady answered. "A demon can't come through to this world unless through a gate. And the last gate that had any demonic essence within was the gate that opened a few weeks back.
"But the cult still had a way to get something related to the demons, quasi-demons. They summon them by sacrificing humans.
"You have all been on this case already and have some information about it. Normally, we from the council would definitely not do anything about it.
"But Gia has said it is a matter of concern, stating that actions have to be taken to stop the cult," the lady said.
"So you mean you have known about the demons and you didn't do anything to stop it?" Elena asked.
"It's not as simple as that, Lady Elena," he said.
"It's like what? You are meant to protect humanity, yet you don't do anything when you know about an impending world crisis?" she asked, genuinely pissed by the fact. She looked at Luke with rage burning in her eyes.
"Calm down, Elena, and let me explain," he said. "The reason why we are unable to do anything, or have been unable to do anything, is because someone is working with the cult.
"And not just in your zone; in all the zones there is someone working with them from some of the major guilds, or even the Awakened Guild.
"They are in government positions and more, and it's hard to identify them. Due to this, we from the council are trying to fish them out rather than attack the cult's activities that have been happening worldwide.
"We see the rats and moles as a bigger issue and the better place for the council to pour their resources for now.
"That's why we need you, Elena; you are someone we can trust, and you also know what's happening, which means you are already in the situation.
"While the council handles what we need to, you will help us take down the cult and their activities," he said.
"We aren't helping you with anything; we were doing what we were doing before you called us. We gathered information on our own and did what we needed to on our own. We didn't need your help in the slightest, and we won't assist you," she said.
"But what you have done has barely scratched the surface of the issue," Luke said with a smile.
