Chapter 39: Beast of Calamity
"Here it is!"
Sifan and I arrived at the base of a watchtower. The tower stood within a military camp, but there were no guards stationed around it.
"Here?"
"That's right. We'll use the launcher on this tower to shoot ourselves onto that plateau! The element of surprise is key!"
"Oh... okay."
I followed Sifan up the wooden ladder to the top of the watchtower, until a massive cannon came into view. I couldn't help but feel puzzled.
"...Is this the launcher you're talking about?"
"Exactly!"
The cannon was made of steel, its black-painted surface mounted securely on a rotating base fixed to the tower.
Sifan inspected the cannon, then gestured for me to step in front of the muzzle.
"Are you serious...?"
"Don't worry! This cannon is powered by magic and won't harm the person being launched!"
With that, Sifan lit a magical flame on a stick and hurried to the back of the cannon. Reluctantly, I clutched my enchanted sword and climbed into the barrel.
"Three, two, one... Fir—huh?"
Before Sifan could finish, a strange disturbance appeared in the distant sky, rapidly approaching. Both Sifan and I noticed it immediately.
If I wasn't mistaken, that was...
"It looks like the slash wave from that monster beast..."
"Tch!"
I quickly jumped out of the cannon and leapt high into the air, drawing my enchanted sword to slice through the incoming shockwave before landing back on the ground.
"You easily neutralized that monster beast's attack. You're amazing, big brother!"
"It's nothing special. Just stay hidden and don't poke your head out!"
"Got it!"
Still, Sifan couldn't resist sneaking a peek, her curious eyes sparkling as she watched me.
*Sigh*... Oh well. I'll just make sure the monster's attacks don't reach her.
The dazzling starlit sky, once in harmony with the setting sun, was now obscured by thick clouds. A deluge of lightning bolts rained down, obliterating the surrounding buildings in an instant.
"This isn't good...!"
Realizing I had been too lax, I quickly activated my powers to disperse the clouds. Though they vanished without a trace, the damage had already been done—a result of my negligence.
"Don't worry, big brother! The buildings here were evacuated before we arrived!"
Hearing this reassurance immediately put my mind at ease. It was the best news I could ask for.
"That's a relief."
I refocused on the plateau ahead, leaping into the air while channeling the magic within my enchanted sword to propel myself forward. This was my first attempt at such a maneuver.
Simply jumping wasn't enough anymore. I needed to develop a method for flight.
Unfortunately, the monster beast had no intention of letting me reach my destination.
"Screeeech—!!!"
A piercing screech assaulted my ears, accompanied by a violent gale that momentarily threw me off balance. My body couldn't automatically resist these effects, indicating that they weren't created by the monster's inherent abilities.
But this level of interference was nothing to me. I countered the wind and sound with my own powers.
"Why not give up and die quietly?"
Perhaps provoked by my taunt, the monster's screech grew even louder.
As I drew closer to the plateau, I could clearly see a massive insect-like creature, resembling a mantis, at its center. This was undoubtedly our target and the source of the earlier onslaught.
"Hmph!"
I hurled my enchanted sword toward the monster with precision. The blade streaked through the sky, shattering the transparent energy barrier surrounding the plateau before embedding itself into the creature's right foreleg.
"Screeeech—!!!"
Amid the monster's anguished cries, I landed flawlessly. But when I looked closer, all that remained of the monster's former position was a severed red foreleg with my sword still lodged in it.
As I moved to retrieve my sword, the monster's presence loomed behind me.
I ducked to avoid a slashing strike, pivoted, and sprinted toward the severed limb to reclaim my sword. Then, channeling its magical power again, I launched into a series of rapid, high-speed strikes against the monster.
With each swing, more of the creature's black blood splattered, until it finally collapsed under the strain.
This enchanted sword, now permanently imbued with my abilities, proved its worth yet again.
"Chitter-chitter-chitter—!!!"
The monster struggled to rise, but I swiftly severed all its middle and hind legs. Its pained howls filled the air as it crashed heavily to the ground.
"Resistance is futile."
I raised my sword and drove it mercilessly into the creature's head.
At last, the monster ceased its movements, falling completely silent.
The next sound I heard was a set of light footsteps approaching.
"Wow! You're incredible, big brother!"
Sifan ran over excitedly, her eyes wide with curiosity as she inspected the fallen beast.
"Is that enough? I'm heading back to reunite with my comrades."
"Huh? Aren't you going to collect your reward?"
"No need."
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely."
"Well... I'll inform the village chief! Thank you so much, big brother!"
Sifan jumped up and down in joy. To her, the monster's death was the greatest news imaginable.
Her pure and jubilant expression made me feel that this journey had been worth it.
That innocent, happy smile was the best reward I could ever ask for.
