Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Determination
"Bang!" With a muffled sound, the basketball in Evan Turner's hand was forcibly knocked down by Jiang Hai's right hand.
As the basketball fell to the ground, Evan Turner also lost his balance and fell back, sitting on the floor. His legs buckled beneath him. There was nothing he could do; Jiang Hai's strength was too great!
"Attack, attack, attack!" After Jiang Hai landed, he didn't give anyone a chance. He grabbed the basketball, passed it to Smart, and shouted as he rushed toward the frontcourt.
"So strong!" Watching Jiang Hai's back, Evan Turner muttered under his breath. He had underestimated Jiang Hai. He had never imagined this guy could be so fast and jump so high. Just now, during physical contact, his jump had clearly exceeded one meter. Despite that, his strength was still immense!
"Where did this monster come from?" Evan Turner gritted his teeth and muttered as he looked at Jiang Hai, who had already reached the opponent's half of the court. Still, he remained professional and chased after him.
But by then, Jiang Hai's speed was at full throttle. After Marcus Smart received the ball, he broke through to the opponent's half of the court, only to find Avery Bradley blocking his way. Realizing he had no chance, and with Jiang Hai rapidly catching up, Smart passed the ball to him.
Originally, Smart had hoped Jiang Hai would stop and shoot a three-pointer. He had just seen Jiang Hai's shooting ability, which seemed very reliable. Or, Jiang Hai could drive in for a two-pointer since Evan Turner hadn't caught up yet. But to Smart's surprise, Jiang Hai didn't follow the usual route.
About half a meter outside the three-point line, Jiang Hai caught the ball. Without slowing down, he took off, charging toward the basket. After one large step, he was already just inside the three-point line.
"It's over, this guy treats basketball like football." Seeing Jiang Hai's actions, John on the sidelines couldn't help but laugh.
The others on the sidelines were stunned for a moment, then sighed, especially Marcus Smart. It seemed his fast break had turned into a mistake for Jiang Hai, but would Jiang Hai really make a mistake? Smart didn't think so!
Taking another big step, Jiang Hai entered the three-second zone. As everyone watched in surprise, Jiang Hai soared into the air, jumping so high and far. Before anyone could react, he seemed to sprout wings, flying effortlessly toward the basket. He dunked the ball with both hands.
"Clang!" A loud noise echoed as Jiang Hai hung high above the basket. The basketball bounced underneath the hoop. This was the first time Jiang Hai had sprinted from the backcourt to dunk, and in one word: impressive!
"Ah!" With a whistle, Jiang Hai jumped off the basket, slapped hands with Marcus Smart, who was still in a daze, then ran back to defend. The others were a bit confused.
As they remained perplexed, Brad Stevens' eyes lit up on the sidelines.
He knew Jiang Hai had good physical fitness, but he never expected him to be this good, covering three steps from the three-point line during a fast break. That was truly surprising. It took him a while to fully process it.
"We must sign him, no matter the cost!" Brad Stevens thought. If Jiang Hai could do this during a game, the impact on the score might only be two points, but the effect on morale would be enormous.
No one knew how much of an impact this monster would have on the basketball world, but the thought of Jiang Hai being signed by his team made Stevens' heart race.
"This monster!" Evan Turner, seeing the play unfold, could only smile bitterly and feel helpless. During the next possession, only Avery Bradley, who was mentally prepared, managed to keep up, while the others were flustered, resulting in a missed shot. Olynyk grabbed the rebound and passed it to Marcus Smart. Smart dribbled across half-court, spotting Jiang Hai slowly running ahead. Thinking of Jiang Hai's explosive dunk, Smart figured the next play should go to Jiang Hai.
Jiang Hai caught the ball, and Evan Turner immediately came over, waving his long arms and assuming a three-threat defensive position. But this time, Turner focused on defending against a possible drive. He knew Jiang Hai could shoot, but since Jiang Hai had just passed half-court, Turner expected him to drive or dribble.
Unfortunately, if he guessed correctly, Jiang Hai wouldn't follow the usual play.
With a smile, Jiang Hai looked at Evan Turner, then jumped right in front of him.
"Who the heck!" Evan Turner immediately stepped forward to defend, but Jiang Hai had already leaped. In front of everyone's astonished eyes, Jiang Hai launched a shot from just a step away from the center line. The ball traced a beautiful arc and swished through the basket.
"I told you, within half-court, it's all his range, and his shooting percentage is very high," Avery Bradley said with a shrug to the stunned onlookers.
When he first came back, he'd told his teammates and coaches about Jiang Hai, but none of them believed him. Now, the evidence spoke for itself, and no further explanation was needed.
"How do you even defend against this?" Evan Turner hesitated and asked Avery Bradley. Avery just shrugged and pointed to Brad Stevens on the sidelines, indicating the clear meaning: Don't ask me, ask the boss!
Seeing this, Evan Turner sighed, realizing he was in trouble today. His instincts were right; he was indeed in trouble!
On the next possession, Smart recognized Jiang Hai's strengths and passed the ball to him again. Jiang Hai didn't disappoint, catching the ball and nailing a long-distance three-pointer with ease. After hitting four in a row, Evan Turner had to change his strategy and prevent Jiang Hai from receiving the ball. He retreated to the inside, and with a quick flash, he rushed into the paint.
Smart saw Jiang Hai's signal as he ran and, without hesitation, threw the ball into the paint. Although the pass was a little high, it didn't matter to Jiang Hai. He leapt effortlessly, intercepting the ball in mid-air, and dunked it before Zeller could react.
"Wow, this is the first time I've seen assists look so easy!" Marcus Smart thought as he watched Jiang Hai's athleticism.
For the first time, Smart understood what it meant to assist in such an effortless way. If he played alongside Jiang Hai, would he be able to break Stockton's NBA assist record?
As these thoughts ran through his mind, Brad Stevens' eyes brightened even more on the sidelines.
"Sign him. We must sign him no matter what, even if we offer him a middle-class contract for one year. We must sign him, and next year, we'll give him a maximum salary!" Stevens looked at Jiang Hai, who was happily smiling and enjoying the game, his outward calmness belying his trembling hands in his pockets.
"Sort out the video of this game later. I need it," Stevens said quietly to his assistant coach, who was still in a daze. The assistant nodded, signaling that he understood. This training session had clearly become Jiang Hai's showcase.
After a full 12 minutes, Jiang Hai had made 12 out of 13 shots, seven of seven three-pointers, and one dunk, which missed due to hitting the rim. Aside from that, all his shots went in, totaling 31 points in just 12 minutes. The NBA single-quarter record was 33 points by George Gervin and Carmelo Anthony. Jiang Hai had easily scored 31 points without being the main focus of the offense. Did this mean he could break the record at any time?
Brad Stevens was excited. Beyond those 31 points, the four blocks and three rebounds seemed almost secondary.
"Take Jiang Hai to Mr. Ainge first. I'll review the video and join you soon," Stevens said. His determination to sign Jiang Hai was growing stronger. He didn't wait for the practice to end; instead, he pulled Avery Bradley aside and handed the task to the assistant coach. They headed to the video room while the assistant coach took care of things on the court.
They needed to edit this 15-minute training session, and as for Jiang Hai, Avery took him to shower, change, and head to the other side of the stadium.
