Chapter 745: The Battle Against Monsters - Part 2
Arshley walked into her room and stopped in front of the crystal ball on her desk.
Channeling her mana, the crystal ball suddenly emitted a bright light, and Liliana's figure appeared in front of her as a magical hologram.
"Liliana," Arshley greeted with a gentle smile. "Were you looking for me?"
Liliana returned the smile before replying, "Yes, I was. I heard the number of monsters attacking humanity's borders is increasing. Is that true?"
Arshley's expression darkened. She let out a long breath and gave a small nod. "You're right, Liliana. The sheer number of monsters is overwhelming my army. Do you know what's causing their appearance?"
Edward had mentioned earlier that the ancient magic circle at the center of the Gurun Kekacauan might be the cause, but that was still unconfirmed.
Liliana shook her head. "Sorry, Arshley. I still don't know, but I'll look into it right away."
Arshley's eyes widened in disbelief. She pointed at Liliana. "You? I didn't hear that wrong, did I?"
"Yes, me," Liliana replied, folding her arms. "I'll go straight to the Desert of Chaos to investigate. That way, we can find the truth quickly."
"You…" Arshley wanted to say something, but the words caught in her throat.
She never expected Liliana to personally head into the Desert of Chaos just to find the source of the problem. If something happened to her, wouldn't that be a disaster for the demon race?
As if reading her thoughts, Liliana gave a faint smile and reassured her, "I appreciate your concern, but you can rest assured—I'll be fine."
Arshley was at a loss for words. Once Liliana spoke like that, nothing could change her mind.
"If you leave, what will happen to the children? Have you told them?" She asked, her voice earnest.
"I haven't yet," Liliana replied with a small shake of her head. "But I'll tell them later."
"Alright…" Arshley exhaled slowly. "If you need anything, let me know. Even if you want me to watch the kids, I'm ready."
It had been difficult for her to accept at first that her brother and Liliana already had children, but now she had come to terms with it.
In fact, she adored the little girls as if they were her own. If they ever needed her, she would come without hesitation.
Sensing Arshley's genuine care, Liliana's smile deepened slightly.
"Thank you. If I need you, I'll tell you."
She didn't want to act hypocritical by saying something like, "It's fine; I don't want to trouble you."
Whether it was her or Arshley, they were both Leon's women, and they needed to work together. Besides, Arshley had shown how deeply she loved her children, and Liliana was grateful for that.
After exchanging a few more words, they ended the communication, and the room fell silent once more.
Arshley's expression grew tense and uneasy, as if something weighed on her mind.
"Is it just me? But…" She gazed at the sky outside the window. "Why do I feel so afraid that Liliana will face a terrible misfortune in the Desert of Chaos?"
...
"Huh…" Liliana exhaled slowly. Leaning back in her chair, she stared at the ceiling with a complicated expression.
"Was my decision to go alone the right one?" She wondered.
A few days earlier, she had sent her cousin Lilith to investigate the heart of the Desert of Chaos, and the findings were shocking.
There lay a seven-thousand-year-old ancient formation—the very source from which the endless monsters emerged.
Lilith had also reported a powerful barrier protecting it. Even her strongest attacks couldn't leave a scratch.
And keep in mind—Lilith was the most powerful mage in the Demon Empire.
Exceptionally gifted and equal in talent to her, she had reached the rank of Sovereign Mage at a very young age—an achievement none of their predecessors had ever attained.
Yet even someone like her couldn't destroy the formation, leaving Liliana with no choice but to see it for herself.
"This is the right choice," she muttered, clenching her hands. "If I don't go, this disaster will never end, and casualties will keep rising. Moreover…"
Her gaze softened, a longing flickering in her eyes. "Leon is out there fighting, and I can't lose to him!"
Having steeled her resolve, she rose to her feet and walked out of the room.
…
The border of the Demon race's territory…
The battles between the demon race and the monsters were as fierce as those in humanity's lands.
The demon generals, backed by hundreds of thousands of soldiers, fought to drive back the monsters trying to break through the border.
"Die, damn it!" Garan roared, clenching his right fist before smashing it into the two monsters in front of him.
*Boom!*
The strike was so powerful that it obliterated them in an instant. Without pausing, he launched another attack on the four monsters charging at him.
"Behind you, Garan!" Lilith's indifferent voice called from behind.
Startled, Garan quickly turned around—but it was too late. The four monsters had already lunged at him, pinning him into the sand.
"Damn it!" He growled, struggling to crush them, but it was useless.
They held his arms and legs, rendering him immobile.
*Whoosh!*
A fireball suddenly shot down from above, smashing into them.
*Boom!*
In an instant, the four monsters were burned to ashes, freeing Garan.
He exhaled in relief as he got back to his feet. Looking up, he gave a faint smile and nodded.
Lilith smiled faintly in return before resuming her attacks on the monsters scattered across the battlefield.
About two hundred meters from Garan, Merlin fought with unwavering focus, raising his sword and cutting down each approaching monster with precise, fluid strikes.
His face stayed calm, showing no hint of overzealousness or haste.
If Leon had been there, he would have been surprised—Merlin was the kind of man who usually wore his emotions openly, whether it was anger, excitement, or joy.
But now, he was different. After realizing his mistakes, Merlin began working to better himself. He had cast aside his improper thoughts toward Liliana and devoted his heart and mind entirely to honing his skills.
Furthermore, his crushing defeat at Leon's hands in the past had left him with a deep sense of dissatisfaction and a burning resolve to grow stronger so that one day he could avenge that humiliation.
"Argh!"
A monster's roar echoed from ahead, yet Merlin's expression didn't change. He twirled his sword before driving it straight into the creature's neck.
In an instant, the monster's strength faded, and it collapsed.
Merlin shook his head with indifference and mocked coldly, "Really… weak."
