Chapter 214: Mr. Sander (E)
"Are you sure this is the place?" Jin couldn't help but ask, as in front of him, instead of an office, was just a house that resembled the other houses in the town.
"Well, it matches the address…" Dylan said as he took out his phone and rang the director's number.
A subtle sound of ringing could be heard from the inside of the house as Jin and Dylan exchanged gazes with each other.
It was only after the eighth ring that the phone was picked up.
"Hello, sir, this is Dylan. I've reached the address with Jin for the audition," Dylan told over the phone.
"Oh, have?!" A loud was came from inside as the entrance door of the house was soon unlatched, and a man in his late sixties looked towards them with a friendly gaze.
He was wearing a dirty apron outside his regular clothing, seeing which, a subtle frown couldn't help but appear on Jin's and Dylan's faces.
"I apologise for my appearance. I was feeding my chickens at the back just a while ago." He told the two of them the next moment.
"Ah, that's totally alright, Mr Sander. It's good to see you're so active even at this stage." Dylan immediately handled the matter, and a chuckle escaped Mr Sander's mouth.
"Haha, I try to do what I can. Come in, you two," He gestured the two of them inside and then pointed them towards the living room, "Make yourself at home. I'll take care of this apron first,"
"Got it, Mr Sander," Dylan answered, and he, along with Jin, soon sat in the living room while looking around at the decorative items and pictures to pass their time.
'Oh?' Jin's sight went towards a handmade painting of a middle-aged woman. It was so intricately and finely crafted that Jin couldn't help but be impressed as his gaze went towards other things in the room.
It was then that he noticed a family picture of Mr Sander with his wife and children over the fireplace's shelf.
A smile formed on his face as he saw the two children who were standing in front of Mr Sander and his wife.
However, on a closer look, he couldn't help but find Mrs Sander's face familiar.
When he looked at the painting that was hung on the wall once again, it all connected to him.
"Sorry to keep you two waiting," Mr Sander soon arrived with two cups of tea and set them on the centre table along with some snacks.
"Did you paint it yourself?" Jin couldn't help but ask while pointing towards the wall painting.
"Yes, I painted it a few years ago. My wife had complained of back pain for almost two weeks after becoming a live model for this painting.
It's understandable as she was in the same position for almost five hours, haha!" Mr Sander chuckled as a reminiscent expression appeared on his face.
Seeing him like that, a smile formed on both Dylan's and Jin's faces.
"I'm sorry I lost myself for a bit there. About your audition. You have gone through the full script, I believe," Mr Sander asked the next moment, looking towards Jin. His disposition suddenly changed from friendly to a serious one.
"Yes, I'm through with it," Jin answered confidently. He's been going over it in the morning for the last two days.
His increased mental constitution had also made it easier for him to grasp things quickly.
So, he only needed to revise the script a couple of times before becoming confident in it.
"That's good, the first thing I did after making the script was to send it to all actors who were famous in the industry right now, since I want this film to gain recognition no matter what," Mr Sander said firmly and continued.
"Most of them have not responded, and you were the first to do so. While I'm glad that you've responded positively to the film but that doesn't mean I'll be easy on you. If I'm dissatisfied with your performance, then no matter what, I'll reject you, got it?"
"I understand," Jin nodded to these words.
"Alright, let's go to my backyard as there's more space there," Mr Sander said and got up from his seat.
A few minutes later, Mr Sander was standing in his backyard along with Jin and Dylan.
He was busy going through the script to look for an appropriate scene for Jin, whereas Jin and Dylan were busy looking at the chickens, goats and pigs that Mr Sander was rearing in his large backyard.
"Here," Mr Sander finally got the scene and gave the sheet to Jin, "I'll give you fifteen minutes to get familiar with it, and then I'll make my decision."
Hearing this, Jin just nodded his head while his eyes went through the given page of the script.
There was a particular scene underlined in red, which was what Jin needed to do.
There weren't any dialogues in it, but he needed to accurately depict the emotions the main character was feeling.
'So, he chose one of the most difficult scenes, huh?' Jin thought to himself and imagined the whole scenario in his mind.
It was one of the scenes near the end of the film where the main character, after spending a very memorable day with his family, looks at them with a bright weary smile on his face at the dinner table.
His face carries gratefulness and subtle hints of guilt. It's a very pivotal scene, as the next day, he ends his own life.
While Jin was immersing himself in the scene, Mr Sander grabbed a chair from the side and placed it beside Jin as he stood beside Dylan and waited patiently.
"To be honest with you…I don't have much hope for him. I'm already glad that you came all the way here, but this role requires a lot of maturity, which can only come from life experiences. He's only in his twenties, so experience is something he still lacks.
Hearing this, Dylan gave a confident smile and said, "Mr Sander. There's a popular saying, 'Don't judge a book by its cover, ' and it aptly represents Jin's talent in acting. Just wait and watch,"
"I hope that's the case," Mr Sander said just for the sake of saying. He really didn't carry much hope towards Jin.
'I'll be waiting to see your expression when he starts acting then,' Understanding Mr Sander's thoughts, Dylan thought to himself as his smile subtly widened.
