Chapter 391: How Awesome is Dabao?
It wasn't long before Zhao Lizhen returned. As soon as she entered the house, she muttered, "They're fixing the road outside. I had to take a huge detour to get back."
"Hurry and eat. I'll take San Bao out in a bit!"
"Go early and come back early," Lin Feng replied.
After dinner, Zhao Lizhen went upstairs to put on her makeup and change. Once she was ready, she left with San Bao. The little girl pursed her lips, repeatedly looking back over her shoulder at Zhang Yuxi and Lin Feng as she went.
"Honey, why don't you go with them?" Lin Feng suggested.
"Okay!" Zhang Yuxi had the same idea and called out to her mother-in-law. "Mom, wait up! I'll go with you."
Zhang Yuxi quickly got ready and left with Zhao Lizhen. They returned home around nine o'clock.
Next, it was Lin Feng's turn to play with the kids. Er Bao was reading a fairy tale book, already able to recognize all the words inside. Da Bao was quietly assembling a Transformer by himself.
On the other side, Si Bao was stumped. "Daddy, could you come over for a moment?"
Lin Feng walked over. "What's up?"
Scratching his head, Si Bao asked, "Daddy, where does this piece go?"
Lin Feng glanced at it and suggested, "Si Bao, let's not worry about adding more pieces for now." He pointed at Si Bao's creation. "Let's first check if what you've already built is correct."
Si Bao looked as Lin Feng showed him the picture of the finished product in the instruction manual.
"Look, Si Bao, Ultraman's face has four... Now look at the face you built. Can you even tell that's supposed to be Ultraman's face?" Lin Feng continued, "And if I'm not mistaken, this... thing on his head shouldn't be a weapon. It's probably his foot."
Si Bao exclaimed in surprise, "Really?"
He took the piece off the model's head and searched through the pile of building blocks. Lin Feng found the other half of the foot and handed it to him.
"Thank you, Daddy!"
"You're welcome!"
When Si Bao put the two pieces together, they formed a complete foot.
Hmm, it really was a foot!
Lin Feng then said, "Sweetheart, how about Daddy takes apart the wrong parts and we start over, okay?"
Si Bao looked at his 'masterpiece', a little reluctant to see it go.
"But we have no choice," Lin Feng said helplessly. "If we keep building on the wrong parts, we won't be able to use the other pieces correctly. Your Ultraman will never be finished."
Si Bao sighed like a little adult. "Alright then!"
Lin Feng's disassembly removed two-thirds of the structure, which broke Si Bao's little heart. He comforted his son, "It's okay. We'll be much faster this time, right?"
Si Bao hummed in agreement.
While helping Si Bao, Lin Feng was also keeping an eye on Da Bao across from them. The older boy was diligently comparing the instructions to the model and then searching for the right parts. Da Bao was plump and chubby, the most robust of the four children, which made him very endearing. When he bent his head down, his chubby little cheeks and pursed lips were an adorable sight. The way he tilted his head, his face was just so cute.
Ever since the children had started school, Lin Feng hadn't had much chance to observe them this closely. Only now did he realize how much more composed Da Bao had become.
"Da Bao, do you need Daddy's help?"
Holding up the instruction manual, Da Bao asked, "Daddy, what does this part mean?"
Lin Feng took a look. "It's saying there should be another layer on top to create a hollow space, like an empty room. We need to put this little figure inside."
Da Bao understood immediately and smiled. "Thanks, Daddy!"
"You're welcome!"
With Lin Feng's help, Si Bao's Ultraman was quickly completed. Si Bao let out a shout of joy and happily ran to show his creation to Er Bao.
Lin Feng sat down next to Da Bao. The Transformer was only two-thirds assembled, but in Lin Feng's eyes, it was already an incredible achievement. Da Bao worked patiently and methodically, never rushing. Since Lin Feng had nothing else to do, he just watched him quietly.
What made him feel very gratified was that, although his children had various flaws, none of them had a bad temper. They had many good qualities, which made him feel incredibly proud.
"You take your time building. Daddy's going to go cut up some fruit, okay?"
"Okay!"
Lin Feng sliced some honeydew melon. "Kids, come and get some melon!"
He brought a small plate over to Da Bao. Seeing how focused his son was, Lin Feng fed him the pieces.
"Are you tired?"
"Not tired!"
By eight-thirty, Lin Feng sent a message to Zhang Yuxi, asking when she would be back.
[Probably around nine.]
Zhang Yuxi's reply came quickly.
Lin Feng started getting Er Bao and Si Bao ready for bed. After helping them wash up, he took them upstairs and tucked them into their little beds.
Before leaving their room, he reminded them, "You two sleep well now. Daddy is going to check on your big brother Da Bao and wait for Mommy and San Bao to come home."
The children were exhausted from the day's play. They said goodnight to Lin Feng, turned over, and drifted off to sleep. The sleeping positions of Er Bao and Si Bao, however, were truly a sight to behold.
"Da Bao? Are you done?"
Da Bao couldn't hide his excitement. "Just a little bit more, Dad! Just a little bit more!"
Lin Feng walked over and praised him sincerely. "Wow, Da Bao, you're really amazing!"
Da Bao smiled and began the final steps. "Dad, I did it!"
Seeing Da Bao looking like he was about to fly with joy, Lin Feng picked him up and spun him in a circle. Da Bao giggled and asked, "Dad, am I awesome?"
Lin Feng looked at him with admiration. "You're super awesome! Our Da Bao is getting more and more amazing!"
Having been praised, Da Bao's little expression was incredibly smug. "Dad, that was actually super hard, but I finished it."
"Incredible!" Seizing the opportunity, Lin Feng spoke earnestly to his son. "Actually, Da Bao, Mom and I didn't think you'd be able to finish it all by yourself! Did you believe you could do it?"
Da Bao nodded. "Mm, I didn't think so either!"
Lin Feng smiled and ruffled his son's hair. "You see? Sometimes it's not that we can't do things, but that we don't believe we can. We have to be brave enough to try. That's the only way to find out what we're capable of, right?"
Da Bao nodded vigorously. He understood that feeling perfectly now.
Lin Feng added, "Not only did Mom and I not believe you could finish it by yourself, but we also thought you definitely wouldn't be able to stick with it!"
"But Da Bao did stick with it!" Da Bao declared loudly.
Lin Feng felt both gratified and proud. "That's right! Just when we all thought you were going to give up, you kept going! So perseverance really is the key to victory, isn't it?"
Da Bao nodded emphatically again. "Dad, I'm super awesome!!"
Lin Feng planted a firm kiss on his son's forehead. "Daddy knows! From now on, Daddy will believe that you can do anything you set your mind to and that you can persevere. So you have to believe in yourself too, that you can do it and see it through, okay?"
Da Bao replied with a firm, "Okay!"
Lin Feng stroked his head lovingly. "You have younger siblings, and Dad is so glad they have a big brother as great as you. You're super awesome!"
Da Bao beamed with happiness.
"Come on, let's get you to bed."
Da Bao hesitated for a moment. "Dad, you have to show this to Mom! Let her know that I'm really impressive!" Da Bao seemed eager to prove himself, yet at the same time, he didn't.
Lin Feng smiled. "Okay. As soon as Mom gets back, I'll show her!"
After helping Da Bao wash up, Lin Feng took him upstairs and found the other children already fast asleep.
"Goodnight, Da Bao!"
"Goodnight, Dad!"
Lin Feng waited in the living room for another ten minutes before Zhang Yuxi finally returned with Zhao Lizhen and San Bao. San Bao had already fallen asleep on the way home.
Zhao Lizhen said, "Lin Feng, take the child to bed first, then come back down. I have something to tell you."
"Okay."
