My Coldhearted Husband’s Regret

Chapter 54 - Watching Each Other

Veronica pulled her attention away from Cullen as Jordan's voice cut through her thoughts, calling her over to assist with some complex technical inquiries. She pushed all thoughts of her husband aside and made her way toward the group gathered around one of the advanced displays.

The moment she turned to leave, Nate caught sight of her familiar figure.

Niall had drifted away from Cullen's side, moving toward Isaac to engage in conversation about the impressive array of technological innovations surrounding them.

Nate delivered a sharp elbow to Cullen's ribs, nodding deliberately in Veronica's direction. "Look who decided to show up today. Your better half is here too."

Cullen's eyes followed the subtle gesture until they landed on Veronica's silhouette. She stood with perfect posture, tablet clutched in her hands, positioned strategically beside the exhibit while she broke down the intricate technical specifications for Jordan and his colleagues.

The conversation between Veronica and Jordan grew increasingly animated as they delved deeper into the technical details. Neither seemed aware that Cullen's intense stare was burning into them from across the exhibition floor.

Nate observed the scene for several beats before breaking the silence. "Who exactly are those individuals surrounding your wife? She appears to be walking them through the fundamental technology behind this exhibit. I had no idea your wife possessed such extensive expertise in this field."

Cullen maintained his unwavering focus on Veronica, refusing to shift his gaze or offer any response to Nate' curious questions.

Something seemed to trigger Veronica's instincts, causing her to lift her head and scan the crowd around her.

Their gazes collided across the bustling expo floor. Veronica's step faltered for just a moment.

The substantial distance between them made reading Cullen's exact expression nearly impossible. However, she caught what appeared to be the faintest hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

Could he actually be smiling in her direction? She must be imagining things.

Confusion clouded her thoughts as she forced herself to look away and refocus on the technical discussion at hand.

Nate had witnessed the entire silent exchange and couldn't resist commenting. "What's got you grinning like that?"

Cullen's low chuckle rumbled in his chest. "It's nothing worth mentioning."

Nate decided not to press the issue further. Instead, his eyebrow arched upward as he studied Veronica's remarkably composed demeanor when she'd spotted them in the crowd. Her reaction to seeing Cullen had been particularly telling.

She'd looked at him with the same detached indifference she might reserve for a complete stranger passing on the street.

Nate found himself unable to determine whether this was another calculated move in her apparent game of playing hard to get, or if she was simply demonstrating remarkable social awareness.

If the situation leaned toward the latter explanation, then considering Cullen's obvious reluctance to make their marriage public knowledge, Veronica had been maintaining appropriate professional distance from him throughout both the recent banquet and now during this technology exposition.

She hadn't allowed even the smallest hint of their personal relationship to surface where others might detect it.

Nate had to give her credit for one thing - when it came to reading social situations and responding accordingly, Veronica demonstrated impressive intuition.

Niall's return interrupted his thoughts as she approached their small group. "What has you two so deep in conversation?"

Nate recovered his composure with practiced ease, flashing his characteristic smile. "Nothing particularly interesting." He smoothly redirected the conversation. "Did you finish up your business over there?"

Before Niall could formulate her response, a distinguished gentleman approached their group with Gareth in tow, clearly intent on making introductions. "Professor Mikael, I'd like you to meet the algorithm specialist I mentioned to you earlier. This is Ms. Crystal."

Gareth happened to be the same technology expert Dario had taken the time to introduce to Veronica during the previous evening's banquet event.

During that particular night, when Niall had made her approach toward Dario, Gareth had been present and observing the interactions around him.

Unfortunately, his physical appearance was rather forgettable and unremarkable, and Niall had arrived at the banquet with entirely different objectives in mind. Her focus hadn't been on establishing connections with technology specialists and industry experts.

Consequently, she had paid virtually no attention to him during their brief encounter.

Meeting him again in this new context, she naturally failed to recognize him from their previous interaction.

That same evening, Niall and Dario had appeared to experience some sort of uncomfortable disagreement, but Gareth had been completely absorbed in his fascinating technical discussion with Veronica and hadn't devoted much attention to the unfolding drama. Later, he hadn't bothered to inquire about the details of what had transpired.

Encountering Niall again in this professional setting, Gareth chose not to reference their previous meeting. Instead, he maintained his professional demeanor and extended his hand with a warm smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Crystal."

"The pleasure is mine," Niall responded with appropriate politeness and professional courtesy.

The Crystal family's technology enterprise was experiencing a critical shortage of qualified technical talent. With her awareness of Gareth's impressive professional background and expertise, Niall made certain to maintain a respectful tone throughout their interaction. Isaac recognized the importance of the introduction and made a deliberate effort to join their conversation and offer his own greeting.

Following the initial pleasantries, Niall and Gareth settled into an in-depth discussion about the various technological innovations surrounding them.

The exhibition floor provided an abundance of cutting-edge exhibits and technological marvels to explore and discuss, ensuring their conversation continued for an extended period without any awkward lulls.

Isaac and Huxley, however, found themselves completely out of their depth when it came to understanding the technical complexities being discussed.
