Chapter 20: First mission
[Before you start reading please give me power stones and comment on the chapter!!]
The sacred path of the sword, legend says that Saint Millis himself created this path with an attack from his sword.
It is a road that completely crosses the entire continent of Millis, and it is also the safest in the world when it comes to monsters.
It had been two weeks since I left the great forest, the holy city of Millis was still 15 days away but I would stop in a nearby city to rest.
The city I am heading to is called Tinaven, it is a medium-sized city that serves as a resting place for people like me.
I don't have any money, but fortunately Gustav gave me 5 Millis gold coins, they are worth less than the Asurans but they can help me with the expenses in a shorter time.
I've also been seriously thinking about becoming an adventurer, not because of some silly dream of wanting to see the world or be recognized, I was already quite recognized with my position in the nobility but...
Now I need money and the only way to get money in this world without having a job is to be an adventurer.
My plan is to go up in rank as I travel through the cities, I will stay momentarily in a city until I gather the necessary money and then I will move on to the next one and continue like this until I return home.
This will probably make the trip longer, but it's all I can think of for my first time alone in this world.
My first impression of the city was meh, and yes, after living a decade in Ars the other cities could not impress me, as I said before this is a small city that only serves as a transit and rest area for travelers.
I realize that I may attract some attention because of my adventurer attire and my age, but it can't be helped.
It didn't take long to find the Adventurer's Guild, as it was the largest building in the city.
The inside of the building is everything you would imagine...grown people with huge muscles and faces full of scars and marked with the strength of a warrior, as well as red from alcohol.
The laughter and noise died down when I entered the place, I immediately felt the hostile looks that people gave me but I tried to ignore them as best I could.
"What is that brat doing in here?!"
"Look at his equipment, he's probably some spoiled nobleman who ran away from home."
"Hehe...looks like the little baby wants to be killed before his second birthday huh?!"
The mocking and hostile murmurs became more and more present and I could only sigh.
Fortunately, no one blocked my way and so I reached the receptionist's counter...
Which was a woman with blonde hair and...quite large breasts.
"Good morning young man, how can I help you today?" She asked in a friendly tone without even being fazed by my age.
Although, well, despite being ten years old, I'm already 1.40 meters tall... I guess that's a bit tall, right?...
"I'd like to sign up as an adventurer, miss..." I muttered.
The woman, always unfazed, just nodded, reached under her counter and pulled out a piece of paper and some sort of stone tablet.
"The cost of town hall is five Millis silver coins, by signing up as an adventurer in this branch, you will be able to access the benefits of adventurers, To rank up you will have to complete a specific number of tasks in an allotted time, if you fail two or more tasks you will be demoted in rank, If you spend too much time without doing a task you will be demoted in rank, if you reach S rank, you will have access to exclusive benefits such as greater attention and reward at the time of complete the missions" The woman began to bombard me with things that I could barely understand and I just nodded.
"Okay, please write down your personal information here," she said and handed me a piece of paper.
I started writing my name and all that stuff and a few minutes later the woman handed me a stone tablet with letters on it.
Name: Paul Notos Greyrat
Rank: F
Age: 10
Race: human
Occupation: Magician Swordsman.
Group: None
I looked at the small tablet in my hand, it seemed that some things like rank, age and occupation were literally updated by magic, I guess it's a magical artifact.
I remember my teacher Minerva told me about these...
To get to level E I would have to do ten level F missions so now I have to get to work...
And for that I went to the recruitment table, where there were a bunch of papers that specified the missions that were required.
Being a small city and somewhat far from Milis, the highest rank missions were the C rank ones, which were the elimination of monsters in the forest or things like that, but I don't have time for that.
I was planning to stay here for a few days until I got to rank E and then stay in the next city and do the same thing.
But for that I needed to hurry, but I have confidence in my abilities!!
I approached the quest board as I made my way through the other adventurers and I started to analyze all the missions.
Fortunately there were quite a few F level ones, but I wanted the easiest ones to complete in one day.
But there was someone next to me who caught his attention immediately, he was my same height, had very big blue hair in two braids, a brown tunic, white boots, a big black hat and a staff.
A girl...or maybe a Migurd?
She was equally engrossed in searching for missions but couldn't seem to find any that interested her.
The girl didn't seem to pay attention to my presence, but I felt a sensation of wanting to talk to her. It's hard to explain, it's perhaps like seeing a foreign tourist in your city.
"You...you're a Migurd, right?..." I murmured as I looked at her.
The girl immediately froze and turned to look at me, but when she saw me she sighed with relief...what did that mean?...
"Yes, child, I am a Migurd, what can I do for you?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Umm...what's your name? I'm Paul Notos Greyrat" I said.
"Roxy..." She said and then narrowed her eyes. "Notos Greyrat? Are you a noble by any chance? What, a rich kid trying to be an adventurer?" She said disdainfully.
Ughh...look who's calling me a kid!
"It's hard to explain but I could say that my hometown was destroyed and now I'm trying to make a living" I muttered.
Roxy's expression faltered for a moment but she looked me up and down and crossed her arms.
"Oh yeah? Well, with that expensive equipment it doesn't seem like it!" She said.
(sigh)
"Forget it, I just wanted to be friendly, it's my first day here, but it seems like there are a lot of cocky adventurers here" I spat.
Roxy's face contorted in anger but I began to form a stone bullet in my hand that began to spin at high speed, she shuddered in fear momentarily but then opened her eyes wide.
"m-magic without incantation?!" She squealed in total surprise.
I ignored her, apparently I had already been intimidated so I continued looking for a mission.
"My warehouse is full of new merchandise and I need help unloading it because of my injured back, I am located near the merchants' stand, ask for Rudolf the carpenter."
Requested by Rudolf
Reward: 5 Millis Copper Coins.
Take the request with determined eyes.
"I guess this will be my first mission," I muttered and walked back to the counter.
I could see out of the corner of my eye how the girl Roxy looked at me with fear but I ignored her.
I requested the mission and the receptionist gave me another small tablet, which the applicant had to sign to confirm the task as completed.
The mission didn't have a deadline but I was in a hurry.
But when I was about to leave, three guys stood in front of me with mocking smiles.
"Hey, hey, hey, look what we have here...the little baby wants to play adventurer, huh?..." One of them muttered.
The guys stank of beer and had swords on their waists, they wouldn't punish me for killing them, right?
"Get out of my way, I'm in a good mood" I muttered.
The three men blinked in surprise before bursting into laughter.
"Hahahaha!! Wow, you little baby! You sure do have a sense of humor...and besides...those devices of yours could be sold for a good price!!"
Very good...
I unsheathed my normal sword and with a long sword of silence the main guy's hand fell to the ground with a perfect cut.
The room fell silent as his hand fell to the floor and the others around him were left in shock.
"aaaargh!!!, fucking kid!!, kill him!!" He screamed as he crouched on the ground in pain.
"tch!, fucking brat!!" The other guy screamed and tried to draw his sword but I was faster and threw a stone bullet at him that blew his shoulder apart.
I looked at the last guy who also wanted to draw his sword, I stared at him and he hesitated and finally retreated.
At this I looked towards the crowd behind me with a frown.
"Anybody else!!?" I shouted angrily "Mark my words! Nobody messes with Paul Notos Greyrat!!" I shouted and left the guild.
Oh man...I think I went too far and in the heat of the moment I said my full name.
Luckily no one came out to chase me after that I left and went to the mission location.
...
It took me about ten minutes of walking to get to the indicated place. I asked for Rudolf the carpenter in the shops and so I found a large warehouse and a man of about fifty years old waiting outside the warehouse with an anxious look.
The man scrunched up his face at me and then sighed.
"Boy...don't tell me you're the adventurer who will come to help me..." The man murmured
"Huh?...yes, yes I am, don't worry I'm stronger than I look!" I said confidently.
But still the guy looked me up and down and after a long silence he sighed with resignation.
"Okay, but don't say I didn't warn you, you'll have to take all these boxes full of merchandise to my business which is about three blocks from here" he said as he opened the warehouse door and...
The three-meter-high and five-meter-wide building was almost full of boxes...
I could only let out a laugh of defeat as I looked around the place.
"Yeah, I don't think you'll finish today, but if you somehow do, I'll pay you double," the guy said with a smile and patted me on the back.
I could only see him with my eyes half closed which only made the man laugh harder
"I'll see you at my business, it's on a corner three blocks away. I'll be waiting for you outside so you know where it is," he said, and so he left.
I quickly rushed to grab a box and shit...it weighed about ten kilos...it wasn't that much for me, but with the countless amount of boxes that were around the place I simply lost all motivation.
But it's nothing that healing magic can't fix!!
...
"haaaa...haaaa..." I had already spent two hours loading and unloading boxes, fortunately it seemed like I was already halfway through the job, but I was with the midday sun behind me.
Carrying a box, walk three blocks and leave her and repeat the process...
When my arms start to burn I use healing magic and continue... I had already healed myself about five times throughout the course of the job so today I was exercising more than usual.
Box after box, after box the warehouse was emptied little by little until only one remained.
It felt like the heaviest of all but in the end I was able to leave him in the indicated place and when I did I let myself fall on the floor because of exhaustion
"Well done kid... you honestly surprise me, I never thought you'd actually make it, and a promise is a promise, give me your card" he said so I gave him my mission card and he signed it.
"and you pay and you tip" he continued and gave me a bronze coin.
I just smiled and walked out of his business and headed to the adventurer's guild again.
As I entered again the air of laughter and murmurs died down again, but this time not with disdain but with fear, fear of me.
Now again without flinching I walked up to the receptionist and handed over my mission card.
"Very well young man, congratulations on completing your first mission" she said and apparently she did something with my adventurer card because it glowed faintly before handing it back to me.
I just nodded with a smile and left the guild again, it was afternoon and there were a couple of hours left until the sun set so I started looking for an inn.
After a couple of hours of searching I was left with the not so pleasant surprise that there were only two inns in the place, one was for adventurers of rank D and above and the other was for adventurers of rank And down...so the answer was obvious, but the inn I chose looked like a damn hovel for thugs...
For an extra fee I got into the E rank rooms which were just a bed, a table and a window.
And not to mention that it was a bit dirty and the bed was apparently covered in fleas...
So I used a miniature version of a heat island to wrap around the bed and whatever was on it.
And when I shook it I almost vomited from disgust at seeing the tiny insects that came out of it...
(sigh)
After this I lay down on the bed which was terribly uncomfortable and stared at the ceiling, even my hut in the big forest was more comforting than this shit!!!
"No one knows what you have until you lose it huh?..." I muttered with a mocking smile to myself, he had been pampering me in the mansion all these years.
If he really had been a child he would have died on day one...but even I had already grown accustomed to the luxuries of the mansion.
But now I was in real life and I had to fend for myself...
But still...what I wouldn't give for a comfortable bed....
