Chapter 4 - Life in the Wilderness, Task Completed
Lin Yong trekked over a hill and was met with an expanse of salt flats covered in mounds of salt that were created after dewdrops congealed. Still, in this form, the salt was too rough for consumption. He had to get rid of the impurities and crytallize it before he could get the salt he wanted.
Problem was, he had no tools to do that, but to his surprise, he found a peculiar plant on the salt flats. The plants looked like orchids, though smaller in size. They were short, their leaves long and narrow.
Dewdrops that evaporated on these leaves left a layer of fine salt. Lin Yong had a taste of it, and the salt was just like the one he had back on Earth. This was delightful news.
Lin Yong just so happened to have a plastic bottle in his pocket. It used to have gum in it, but now Lin Yong used it to collect the salt. The plant was christened as saltweed.
He had salt, honey, and pepper. I think I can make some decent meat. He went ahead and ran into pheasants and rabbits. Lin Yong got himself a pheasant and a rabbit. Of course the hoe helped him out in his hunt.
Swing it down, and the pheasant’s head was cleaved off its neck. Another swing, and the rabbit was cleaved in two. He tied his haul up with some vines and took them back to his place.
Lin Yong found a stream in a patch of woods near his field. He could clean himself and his food if he wanted to now. First things first. Lin Yong sliced his haul open with his sickle and cleaned them up. He then collected some firewood and went back to his field.
The field gave Lin Yong a sense of security. He started a campfire, skewered his haul with a branch, slathered them in honey and salt, and he started to grill.
He didn’t grind the pepper into a fine powder, but he did crush them, and he sprinkled the seasoning over his meat.
The air was starting to smell nice not too long later. There was the scent of honey, salt, and pepper wafting through the air. The rabbit and pheasant were glistening, grease dripping into the open fire, and the flames crackled.
Lin Yong had only cooked something over the grill once in his whole life. It was back in his college days, when he and his friends had a barbecue session beside the river. Since then, he had never grilled anything before.
And the inexperience showed in his cooking. His meat was overcooked, but it was still decent. Still, Lin Yong was surprised at his appetite. He gobbled up three pounds of pheasant and nearly nine pounds of rabbit in one go.
The farmer munched on his fruit to wash all the grease down. Couldn’t have a meal without dessert, after all. And he lay on the wolf-hide bedsheet. Life can’t get any better than this.
For a moment, Lin Yong had forgotten he was an Earthling, a man of civilization.
Sprouts broke through the ground three days later. They were green with a hint of purple, and they were pleasing to the eyes. Lin Yong asked the system if he needed to make a flooded field.
The system told him to purchase something called How to Cultivate Purple Jade Rice. It cost him 50 more points. Only 550 points left.
Lin Yong checked the new book he bought. Despite its name, Purple Jade Rice was different from any regular rice. It had no need for any flooded fields. All it needed was a place rich in spiritual energy and daily intake of spirit water. Of course, the farmer had to get rid of the pests and weed, especially a kind of pest called spirit aphids. They loved the sweet leaves of the paddy sprouts.
The book was filled with introductions and explanations about purple jade rice. Lin Yong finally found out what the rice really was. It was a kind of spirit rice filled with spiritual energy.
If anyone were to consume it on the regular, they could gain more strength, especially for martial artists and cultivators. Compared to the other spirit rice, the purple jade variant had no impurities or toxin. It contained more spiritual energy and fetched a high price on the market.
…
A year of living in the wilderness later, the rice finally reached maturity. Besides the harvesting movement, Lin Yong had mastered all movements in Power Farming Manual.
Every step he took was filled with power. All he had to do was keep the spiritual energy flowing in his legs, and he could run a few dozen miles without even breaking a sweat, and he could run fast.
He gained a lot of strength too. Keep his spiritual energy flowing in his arms, and he could life anything weighing up to half a ton. And he had more experience swinging the hoe around. Swing it down, and anything he struck would be cleaved in half. Yes, even boulders.
Lin Yong hunted a trio of wolves and a tiger over the year. Their hides were skinned off their flesh and turned into bedsheets. Lin Yong discarded the wolven flesh, but he kept the tiger flesh around.
The farmer had a few meals with it. He was going to finish the rest down the line. Lin Yong had a beard now, and his hair rolled down his shoulders. His clothes were nothing but tatters now. If he didn’t know better, he’d think he was a caveman.
Lin Yong looked at the chubby paddies in his field, and he grinned. Didn’t waste my time for nothing. And he started harvesting the next day. Sooner I finish this, sooner I finish my task, and sooner I get back to Earth. It’s been a year since I went missing. Ya must be worried sick.
Ya kept everything bottled up, but he was a loyal lad. Lin Yong spent the whole day harvesting the paddies, and then he was stumped. He had to thresh the paddies, but he had no thresher. Do I have to swing these around like the people of yore?
“Ding dong. You can purchase a grain purifier for 1000 points. A grain purifier can turn grains into rice or flour. Comes with 3 spirit stones.”
Yet once again, Lin Yong wanted to curse. He didn’t even have 1000 points.
The system answered, “You can take the points in advance, but it’ll cost you 10% of the points as processing fee on top of your debt.”
There was no free lunch when it came to the system, but Lin Yong had no choice. If he wanted to finish his task, this was the only choice. “I’ll get the points in advance and buy the grain purifier.”
“Ding dong. You have taken 1000 points in advance. You have purchased a grain purifier. You need to pay 100 points (processing fee). You now have 450 points remaining.”
Lin Yong saw something about half a square meter sitting in front of him. On top of that object was something akin to a wok. The system told Lin Yong all he had to do was place the paddies into the wok, and the work would be done.
There was an exit on the bottom of the object, and rice would come out of it. Three spirit stones sat beside the object. The grain purifier needed spirit stones to work. Lin Yong inserted a spirit stone and slowly placed his paddies on the wok, then he turned on the grain purifier.
As he poured the paddies, the machine produced purple jade rice at the exit. If it was wheat getting into the wok, then flour would be made.
The rice came out shimmering and glimmering like jade. Lin Yong had laid out a layer of leaves on the ground so the rice wouldn’t touch the soil. In the end, he gained a small mound of purple jade rice.
Lin Yong spoke. “Task accomplished.”
“Ding dong. You have cultivated an acre of purple jade rice. You have produced 1320 pounds of purple jade rice. 660 pounds will be taken as rent. You gain 29000 points.”
