Multiverse Farming System

Chapter 1 - Verdant Artefact

Chapter 1 Verdant Artefact

The last of the bar’s patrons had left. Ya was cleaning things up, while Lin Yong came out to the streets.

He took over the bar from his grandfather after he died a few days ago. It wasn’t a big bar. It was a two-story building with the first floor being the bar, while the second floor was a house.

Ya was a kid Lin Yong’s grandfather took in two years ago. He was twenty years old this year. The bartender and waiter of the bar. And now, he was Lin Yong’s only living family he knew.

Fifteen years ago, his parents went missing. His grandfather passed a few days ago, and Lin Yong barely had anyone left. The only silver lining here was his grandfather died peacefully.

He was on his recliner when it happened. There was no commotion. No noise. It was a quiet affair.

Lin Yong stared at the clear, starry sky above, his heart filled with sorrow, and then he saw a couple people flying through the air.

Yes, they were flying. They crossed building after building, their feet never touching the ground, but they stopped on a rooftop two streets away from Lin Yong, though they probably didn’t see him.

But Lin Yong saw them. One was a gentlemanly old guy in green clothes and a mustache. He almost looked like an immortal.

The other was a gaunt, sprightly man in gray, and he looked solemn.

The man in green spoke. “Finally decided to stop running, have you, Luo Wangfan?”

Luo Wangfan retorted,  “Song Changge, I’d rather toss the Verdant Artefact away than giving it to you.”

Luo Wangfan hurled an object into the air, and it flew in an arc like a comet. And then Lin Yong realized that thing was coming right at him. He tried to dodge, but it was too late.

The object, petite as a walnut, smashed into his forehead. A stab of pain flared up in his head, and he fell to the ground.

The object radiated green, and it buried itself in Lin Yong’s forehead.

‘Ding, host requirements met. Beep, bound to host.’

‘Ding dong. Multiverse Farming System booting.’

‘Ding dong. Ability: Spirit Whisperer, booting.’

In his stupor, Lin Yong thought he heard something speak in his head. He cursed, “What on earth is this? Just my luck. Host? Bound to me? And what’s with the Multiverse Farming System? What’s with this Spirit Whisperer thing?”

And everything went black.

When he came to, he saw two men staring at him. Of course they were the old gits who fought earlier.

Song Changge asked, “Did you see the Verdant Artefact, lad?”

Lin Yong shook his head in confusion. Verdant Artefact? What’s that? All I know is something hit my head, and everything went black. Oh wait, the thing belonged to that Luo Wangfan guy.

Lin Yong glared at Luo Wangfan. “So you knocked me out? You’re paying for the healthcare bill, you know that?”

Still stern, Luo Wangfan said, “Not a problem. Just tell me where the object is now.”

Lin Yong looked at the men. “What object?”

Song Changge said, “I think he was knocked out. He has no idea what we’re talking about. I can’t believe you knocked someone out with that thing.”

Luo Wangfan was a little panicky. “If he has no idea where it is, who does? Not like there’s anyone else here.”

A sigh escaped Song Changge’s lips. “I guess the artefact’s not ours to possess. Let’s leave.”

Luo Wangfan left a check for Lin Yong, and he got up in silence. He had the artefact for three years, but it wouldn’t budge no matter what he did. He was not fated to be its owner, alas.

The men left. Or to be precise, they flew away.

Lin Yong sat up and checked out the check. A million yuan. Generous. He went back to the bar bearing the check.

Ya was already done with cleaning. He was ready to retire for the night. “Get some sleep, Yong. Gramps is gone, but I can take care of you.”

Lin Yong sniffled. Ya was five years younger than him.

The bar was in a place called Parasol Avenue. Two years ago, Lin Yong’s grandfather found Ya lying in front of the bar’s parasol tree, covered in wounds. Lin Yongcheng took him back and got his wounds healed. Since then, Ya had been staying at the bar.

Lin Yong graduated college a couple years ago, and he’d been going around trying to make some money. Ya tended to the bar and Lin Yongcheng, a duty that was supposed to be Lin Yong’s.

Lin Yong went to his room and was about to sleep, but something spoke. “Ding dong. Newcomer pack ready to open. Do you wish to unveil the package?”

That surprised Lin Yong. Who’s talking?

“Newcomer pack ready to open. Do you wish to unveil the package?”

So everything I heard before I blacked out was true? I have a system? A Multiverse Farming System? And I’m a Spirit Whisperer?

It had been a confusing day for Lin Yong. First he saw two men flying across the streets, then he was knocked out, and then he had a system in his head. He was a Spirit Whisperer, whatever that was. And then the old guy just gave him a million yuan and left.

Lin Yong patted his chest. Give me some time to breathe.

“Ding dong. Newcomer pack ready to open. Do you wish to unveil the package?”

“Yes.” Lin Yong gnashed with teeth. Whatever happens, happens.

“Ding dong. Congratulations. You gained 100 square meters of storage space. You gained 1 Spirit Water Pot. You gained 1000 points.”

To Lin Yong’s surprise, he saw a pot the size of his palm sitting in his hand. The pot gleamed beautifully silver, and there were engravings of a myriad of beasts on it.

Obviously expensive. Lin Yong shook his head. And there’s water too. He carefully brought the pot to his mouth and took a sip.

Oh, it’s sweet. And nice too. Leaves a hint of coolness behind.

When the water hit his belly, he felt something warm course through his veins. His whole body was wrapped in something fuzzy. Lin Yong started gulping mouthfuls of water, but strangely, the water didn’t go down at all.

The system explained, “The pot can create spirit water indefinitely.”

Something more surprising awaited him. He realized there was a storage space in his mind. It was about a hundred square meters big. All he had to do was will it, and he could store anything inside. If he wanted to take it out, all he had to do was… will it.

It’s so convenient. Lin Yong held back his delight and carefully caressed his pot before he tucked it away in his storage space. I got myself a treasure. The Verdant Artefact or whatever must’ve knocked me out and swam into my mind somehow. Either way, I got the artefact and unlocked some sort of system. And then I got this newcomer pack.

And I have 1000 points too. Wonder what that does. Wonder what does the system and my Spirit Whisperer powers do. I’ll figure it out down the line.

Lin Yong was about to take his shirt off and get to sleep, but the system said, “Ding dong. Newcomer task unlocked. Plant purple jade rice in the primeval world. Destination designated.”

A beam of light covered Lin Yong. He was speechless.
