Chapter 92: Aiko’s Fall (92)

The crisp autumn breeze rustled through the golden leaves as Aiko and Haruto walked down the quiet street after school. The path leading to the park was blanketed with scattered red and orange foliage, crunching softly beneath their steps. The late afternoon sun bathed everything in a warm glow, creating a serene atmosphere.

"You've been spacing out a lot lately," Haruto said, glancing at Aiko as she walked beside him.

Aiko blinked, snapping out of her thoughts. "Huh? Oh… just thinking about the art competition next week. I've been struggling to decide on a final piece."

Haruto smirked. "You? Struggling with art? That's a first."

Aiko pouted. "I take my work seriously, you know! Besides, I want it to be perfect."

He chuckled. "It will be. You're amazing at what you do."

Aiko felt a small flutter in her chest at his words, but before she could respond, she noticed a large tree near the park's entrance. Its branches were weighed down by the last of its autumn leaves, and a familiar sight caught her attention—a small, white kitten perched on one of the lower branches, mewing softly.

"Haruto, look!" she pointed. "That kitten looks stuck!"

Haruto followed her gaze. "Yeah, it does… But I don't think climbing a tree is a great idea, Aiko."

But Aiko was already moving, determination in her eyes. "It's not that high. I'll be fine," she assured him, gripping the sturdy trunk and carefully placing her foot on the first branch.

"Aiko—seriously, wait," Haruto called, a note of concern creeping into his voice.

She ignored him, climbing higher with careful movements. The kitten mewed louder, shifting slightly as if sensing help was near. Aiko reached out, her fingers just inches from it.

"Almost there," she whispered, stretching a little more.

And then—her foot slipped.

The world seemed to tilt as Aiko lost her balance. A sharp gasp escaped her lips as she tumbled down, leaves scattering around her in a blur of color. Before she could brace herself for impact, strong arms caught her just in time.

Haruto.

The force of the fall sent both of them tumbling to the ground, Haruto landing with a grunt while Aiko landed squarely on top of him. For a moment, neither of them moved, her face buried in his chest as the weight of what had just happened settled over them.

"Aiko—" Haruto started, but his voice faltered when she lifted her head. Their faces were barely inches apart, her wide brown eyes meeting his stunned gaze.

The world around them seemed to fade, the distant rustling of trees and chirping birds becoming nothing more than a blur of sound. Aiko could feel the warmth of Haruto's breath against her skin, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.

"I-I'm sorry!" she stammered, quickly scrambling off him, her face burning red.

Haruto sat up, rubbing the back of his head. "Geez, Aiko… You could've really gotten hurt."

She fidgeted, still flustered. "I—I didn't think I'd actually fall…"

Haruto let out a deep sigh before flicking her forehead lightly. "You always rush into things without thinking."

Aiko pouted, rubbing the spot where he flicked her. "I just wanted to help the kitten…"

At the mention of the kitten, both of them turned toward the tree. The tiny creature, seemingly unbothered, had already made its way down on its own, now sitting on the ground and licking its fur as if nothing had happened.

Aiko's eye twitched. "You have got to be kidding me."

Haruto snorted, and before he could stop himself, he burst into laughter. Aiko, despite herself, found the situation so absurd that she couldn't help but join in.

As their laughter died down, Haruto gave her a pointed look. "Next time, maybe don't climb trees like some reckless kid?"

She crossed her arms, sticking her tongue out at him. "Next time, you catch the kitten."

He smirked. "Deal."

The two of them stood up, brushing off fallen leaves from their clothes. As they walked home, the warmth of the moment lingered between them, unspoken yet understood.

And while Aiko's fall had been unplanned, the way Haruto had caught her—the way he always seemed to catch her—made her heart beat just a little differently.
