Chapter 91: The Beach Trip (91)
The scent of salt and the rhythmic crashing of waves filled the air as Haruto, Aiko, and their friends stepped onto the golden sands of the beach. The sky stretched endlessly, painted in hues of soft blue, with the sun shining brilliantly overhead. The gentle sea breeze tousled their hair as they kicked off their shoes, feeling the warm grains of sand between their toes.
"Wow! It's been so long since we've been to the beach!" Aiko exclaimed, her eyes shimmering with excitement as she spread her arms wide, embracing the summer air.
Haruto chuckled as he slung a towel over his shoulder. "Yeah, we were just kids the last time we came here together."
Aiko turned to him, grinning. "Then we have to make new memories today!"
Mei and Riku, who had come along, were already unpacking their bags, setting up a picnic spot under a large striped umbrella. "We brought enough snacks to last all day!" Mei said proudly, pulling out an assortment of sandwiches, onigiri, and fresh fruit.
Haruto, stretching his arms, smirked. "Let's play in the water first!"
Without hesitation, he grabbed Aiko's wrist and dashed toward the waves. She let out a surprised laugh as she stumbled slightly before running beside him. As they neared the shoreline, the cool water rushed over their feet, sending a delightful shiver up their spines.
Aiko bent down, cupping water in her hands before splashing Haruto playfully. "Take that!"
Haruto blinked as the water dripped from his face. "Oh, you're asking for it now," he said with a mischievous grin.
Before she could escape, he scooped up water and sent a splash back at her. They broke into laughter, running in and out of the waves, their laughter mingling with the calls of seagulls.
As the afternoon went on, they built sandcastles, competed in a beach volleyball match, and collected seashells. At one point, Aiko sat by the shore, carefully arranging shells into a small design. Haruto flopped down beside her, watching her quietly.
"What are you making?" he asked.
Aiko smiled softly, brushing strands of hair behind her ear. "Just something simple… It kind of looks like a flower, doesn't it?"
Haruto studied it, then nodded. "Yeah, it does. You're always good at making things look beautiful."
Aiko's cheeks flushed slightly, and she looked away, pretending to focus on her shells. "It's just practice," she murmured.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange, pink, and gold, the friends gathered around a small bonfire. They roasted marshmallows, shared funny stories, and listened to the soothing sound of waves lapping against the shore.
Haruto leaned back on his hands, gazing at the horizon. "Today was fun."
Aiko, sitting beside him, nodded. "Yeah. I don't want it to end."
He turned to her, noticing the way the firelight flickered in her eyes. "We'll have more days like this," he said softly.
She met his gaze, a warmth spreading in her chest. "Promise?"
Haruto smiled. "Promise."
The night deepened, the stars emerging one by one as the ocean sang its endless song. For Aiko and Haruto, the beach trip wasn't just a fun day—it was a moment to cherish, a memory that would stay with them forever.
