Chapter 79: Chapter 79 - Voldemort's Diary
"Any leads?"
Back at Hogwarts Library after the holidays, George looked at Harry and his two friends with a smile.
Before leaving for the break, he had shared the password for the Slytherin common room with the trio.
"None," Harry replied, looking a little dejected. Ron, however, confidently declared: "Even without solid proof, I'm sure it's Malfoy. Who else could be the Heir of Slytherin?"
"But Malfoy didn't seem like he was lying at the time," Hermione shook her head, not entirely agreeing with Ron's deduction.
On Christmas night, the trio had successfully used Polyjuice Potion to transform into Malfoy's cronies. Using the password George had provided, they managed to sneak into the Slytherin common room.
Unfortunately, they didn't find the answers they were hoping for, as Malfoy had not admitted to opening the Chamber of Secrets. The operation was ultimately a failure.
"Don't worry, take your time. If even the professors haven't uncovered any leads, it means the Heir is very well hidden," George comforted them before returning his attention to a book on magic.
Recently, he had been delving into the Protego Charm, a highly effective defensive spell. During the Christmas magic duel, he realized just how useful this spell could be in combat.
A seventh-year wizard wielding Protego was nearly invincible unless attacked from behind.
He also learned that Protego wasn't limited to magic defense; it could block physical attacks, including Muggle firearms.
However, Protego had its limitations. It only protected in one direction and required the constant input of magical energy, which prevented simultaneous offensive spells.
For George, these drawbacks weren't an issue. While Protego shielded him, he could use his psychic abilities to launch attacks with blades, needles, or even a gun capable of curved trajectory shots.
The only challenge was mastering the spell itself—it was a fifth-year-level charm with considerable difficulty. Even with three brains working together, it would take some time.
"By the way, we found this. It might be related to the opening of the Chamber of Secrets fifty years ago," Harry interrupted, pulling out a small, tattered black diary labeled "T.M. Riddle" from his bag and placing it on the library table.
"This is a diary with T.M. Riddle's name on it. Ron says he saw the name in the Trophy Room—Riddle received a Special Services Award fifty years ago. Hermione speculates that he may have earned it for catching the person who opened the Chamber of Secrets back then."
"Voldemort's Horcrux diary!"
George's eyes fixed on the diary as he sensed the dark and powerful soul within, along with its seductive mental influence. His face stiffened briefly before he forced himself to appear calm.
"What does the diary say?" he asked.
"Nothing, it's blank. I tried using a Revealing Charm and even Revealing Eraser, but neither worked. I wanted to ask if you know how to uncover its secrets," Hermione said with frustration.
George reached out to take the diary but quickly restrained himself.
If he asked the trio to let him study it, they would undoubtedly agree, trusting him completely. He might then use the soul fragment of young Voldemort to learn a wealth of dark magic.
But reason prevailed—this was too dangerous.
For one, Dumbledore was likely monitoring the diary. If George took it, he would certainly attract the headmaster's attention, and nothing would escape Dumbledore's watchful eye.
For another, even with his psychic abilities, George couldn't guarantee immunity from the diary's dark influence.
It was safer not to get involved. He could always learn dark magic from the restricted section later when Dumbledore wasn't around.
"I once read in an alchemy book that some magical items imbued with Animus spells develop sentience. Without earning their trust, it's impossible to access their abilities. This diary might be one of those. Try communicating with it."
"How do we do that?" Harry asked, puzzled.
"Talk to it or write something in it. Take your time and experiment," George suggested with a smile.
The trio found his idea reasonable, thanked him, and quickly left the library to try it out.
"Thanks, George!"
"You're welcome," George replied, exhaling deeply before returning to his book.
For the next half-month, the school remained peaceful. After Ginny lost the diary and Harry found it, the Chamber of Secrets wasn't opened again.
Meanwhile, at the mutant school...
George frowned as he stared at a pile of wood in front of him.
"None of these are suitable," he muttered.
He had asked Leon to have his team collect every type of wood they could find in this world, but none met the requirements for wand-making.
Now that he had learned how to craft wands, George was eager to create one for himself in the Marvel world. It would allow him to unleash his full magical potential.
Wand cores were less of a problem. He had tested and found that strands of Professor X's hair could temporarily substitute as cores, given his unparalleled psychic abilities. If Jean Grey were alive, her hair would have been an even better choice.
The wand wood, however, was a tougher challenge.
In George's ideal scenario, wood from Yggdrasil, the World Tree, would make the perfect wand, but such material was out of reach.
Alternatively, a branch from Groot might work—after all, it was durable enough to serve as the handle of Stormbreaker. Unfortunately, Groot was in space, and George had no way to reach him yet.
He briefly considered using magical metals like Uru from Asgard, but obtaining that was equally impossible at the moment.
"What else could possibly serve as a substitute?" George mused aloud.
