Marvel: Web of Spiders

Chapter 8: 8- Oscorp

(3rd Pov)

Days later, Jayce found himself in Oscorp Tower, the main headquarters of the new powerhouse of the decade. Why? Because he was accepted as a new intern here under some of its lead researchers. He was a sophomore in Midtown High and had such good grades that he was seen as a sort of genius. As such, Oscorp had reached out to see if he had any interest in interning there.

Without hesitation, he had accepted. Not only would he get paid, but he got to work directly under two people who were among the smartest in the state. For this reason, he was given a tour by Doctor Conners. At least until he disappeared into thin air.

Luckily, he was able to convince the man that he just had to run to help a dear friend of his. For that reason, he was able to keep his job. Walking through his lab, Curt Conners was explaining how he worked here in Oscorp.

"We, in this lab in particular, work on making solutions and serums that induce a regenerative period in mammals with a similar speed and reliability as reptiles." He stopped in front of an exhibit that held several mice, all having some kind of injury like a missing limb or ear. "Essentially, we want to be able to regrow missing limbs." He smiled cheekily, showing me his severed limb.

In this universe, he was ex-military. He was a combat med studying to become a biomed student in college when his outpost near the border to Mexico was raided by a mercenary group. He later found out that the military was holding some kind of skeleton key there, and he got caught in the crossfire.

One shrapnel grenade came far too close for his liking, and he was left littered with bits of metal in his arm, chest and a bit in his face. Luckily, most of his injuries were able to be patched up fairly quickly despite the situation, but his left arm was too far gone. The amputation went well, a clean cut, but he still lost his arm.

With his injuries, the military gave him a free ride through one of the best colleges he could go to for his degree, footing the bill for anything he would need to avoid a lawsuit. Why a lawsuit? Because the incident was far outside what a reserve combat med had signed up to do. It wasn't in his contract for some reason.

Luckily for them, Curt wasn't one to throw up a fuss, so he simply asked to go to a good college with a comfortable veteran pay on the side. After college, he landed with Oscorp, hoping to find a way to heal those in his position so they wouldn't have to feel the pain he went through.

"Jayce? Are you listening?" Curt interrupted my musing.

"Sorry, I was lost in thought for a moment there. What did you say?" The man laughed at my awkward chuckle.

"I think you and my other intern are going to be good friends. I believe you go to the same school as well…"

That caught my attention. "Who?"

"A young man with a brilliant mind and a surprising work mentality, despite his frequent absences- Peter Parker." Conners was obviously fond of him. "I was friends with his father when he worked here, he was a good man."

The atmosphere turned a bit sad, so I changed the subject. "Will he be working with Doctor Octavious alongside me?"

Conners nodded, then tilted his head with amusement. "Yes, but there has been a slight change of plans."

"What do you mean?"

"You both will also be interning under Alister Smith, the man who took over Richard's spider project."

Now that, really, caught my attention. 'I need to sabotage that project. No need for other spiders to come about…other than like three other people.'

Masking those thoughts, I asked Curt my next question. "Do you have any idea what my schedule will be?"

"No, you and Peter manage your own timeline. If you want to work on a project, you will. But the more you take the more you are paid. Especially if it gets completed."

I nodded in approval. "That makes enough sense…Mind if I help you with this one?"

Curt smiled, letting out a breath of relief I hadn't realised he was holding. "That would be great, Jayce. Actually, Peter's here right now. Follow me."

He turned and walked through the massive lab. Despite it being one of the lower priority projects, this lab was genuinely massive. Three areas the size of your higher-end apartments, each with several testing rooms.

"The east wing is what we call the Creation Wing, holding all of our production equipment as well as most of our computer rooms for synthesization. The north is The Jungle, where we test everything before application. And finally west is the Application wing, holding all of our live subjects to test our serums on." Curt told me, leading me through the west wing.

"And here's one of our housing units." He muttered, scanning his ID to open the room. Following him inside, I saw a young man around my age leaning over a sterile table. He had glossy brown hair and striking eyes of the same color. He was fairly tall and while he dressed baggy, Jayce could see that he was muscular.

A tingle shot down my spine, head ringing with no danger, but warning. My spider sense was telling me that there was someone similar to me close by, and by the flinch that shot through his body, I knew he felt it too.

Looking away from the sedated mouse on the table, Peter slowly turned to us. The strangest thing about the 'spider-sync' that I didn't notice before was that I could faintly see those stringy colors floating around his head, completely in red and blue. I figured he could see mine too, given the confused glance he sent above my head, but I took the situation into my hands before Dr. Connors got suspicious.

I walked forward and held out my hand, shaking his hand with far too much strength for a normal human, giving him a clue. "Hello, I'm Jayce Tracy, It's nice to meet you." I smiled kindly.

I almost laughed at his confused smile. His spider sense was telling him I wasn't a threat, yet I was squeezing his hand like a vice. "H-Hi? I'm Peter Parker…"
