Given his past experiences, Arthur was cautious not to get too excited right away.
He asked calmly, both in expression and tone, "What images did you remember?"
"I don't know…"
Bucky's expression mirrored his confusion.
Arthur furrowed his brows. 'What do you mean you don't know?'
"I don't know what those images mean," Bucky continued. "In the images, I saw you, and I saw... him!"
He pointed to the wall-mounted TV in the cell, where Steve was tossing his shield like a discus.
"What about the background?" Arthur pressed.
"Fire. Everywhere, it seemed like there was fire. We were all running."
Bucky tried to maintain a calm demeanor, but the slight furrow in his brow told Arthur that he wasn't in a good place. His previously steady arm had started to tremble.
Drawing on some instinctive understanding, Arthur quickly assessed that Bucky's situation was definitely not food poisoning. He could only say, "Alright, calm down. Don't think about it too much."
"I feel... bad."
True to his character, Bucky said this with little change in his expression, but his eyes were slightly red as he looked at Arthur. "What does that mean?"
"Does it matter?" Arthur replied.
Bucky frowned.
Arthur sighed. "What it means doesn't matter. What matters is, when you remember these images, do you still think we are enemies?"
Bucky's expression was like being doused with a bucket of cold water in the middle of winter. He seemed dazed.
Then he nodded quietly but shook his head again. "I can't be sure."
"Then just stay here for a while," Arthur smiled. "At least it's a good start. As for the image you saw, that was probably from seventy years ago, when we first met... The story is a bit far back, but I'll tell you slowly."
...
...
As it turned out, Bucky's memory did indeed begin to gradually recover.
The looping videos on the wall-mounted TV, along with Arthur's "bedtime stories," played a crucial role in restoring Bucky's memories.
This made Arthur even more attentive to the matter, without any relaxation.
In addition to this, he visited several key people, all marked as influential figures on his list.
With his ability to change appearance and his sudden teleportation powers, there was no place in the world that could stop Arthur. He easily met with the people he wanted to see.
And he achieved the goals he set out for.
This time, the gains were immense. Every name on this list would become a force under Arthur's control. What was originally supposed to be Hydra's means of siphoning resources from the world quietly changed hands.
The process went smoothly without any unexpected situations.
The only regret was that these brainwashed individuals didn't possess much useful information.
Moreover, Hydra's methods of controlling them differed from how they controlled Bucky, so sometimes they didn't even know what they had done themselves.
Arthur presented enough evidence to convince them, even causing some of them to break down.
Some even ended up joining forces with Arthur against the common enemy... which was both amusing and frustrating.
Although the information from their mouths was limited, the gains from Bucky's side were significant.
After reflecting on everything, Arthur recalled a name.
"SHIELD Rapid Response Special Forces Captain?"
At that moment, Arthur was still sitting outside the cell, while inside, Bucky frowned as he looked at the food in his bowl. "It's getting worse."
This made Arthur's face flush with embarrassment.
'It's one thing if it's bad, but getting worse? What does that even mean? Other people's cooking skills improve over time, but does that mean mine are just getting worse?'
If you keep mocking me like this, do you really think I can just grab a few cookbooks from veteran chefs and become a master chef overnight?
Arthur's mind was spiraling, but he kept a calm expression. "Let's talk about that Captain."
"His name is Brock Rumlow," Bucky said, shifting his gaze from the unappetizing food to Arthur's face, his expression darkening. "Based on what I know now, I've been living a lie all these years. I should be helping you, but I can only do so much. They don't trust me as much as I thought they did. This is the only name I'm sure of— someone from their organization who knows a lot."
Arthur nodded. "I believe you."
Bucky didn't respond and continued eating his food, chewing with difficulty but still taking care to eat it with one hand.
Arthur had finished telling all the stories he could think of, and at that moment, he wasn't sure what to say next.
Then Bucky suddenly asked, "Is he still alive?"
He was referring to Steve.
Arthur nodded. "Yes, he's alive."
"Can I meet him? I feel like if I meet him, maybe I'll remember more things."
"Not yet," Arthur sighed. "There are some very complicated situations..."
"Can you tell me?"
"Sure," Arthur replied. He didn't feel there was anything to hide. Whether or not he told Bucky, he would find out eventually.
So he explained the circumstances surrounding Howard and Maria Stark's deaths, as well as the current situations with Tony, Steve, and others.
Bucky's eyes darkened for a moment, and then he asked, "Did I… know this person named Howard?"
"You did."
Arthur answered.
"Friends?"
"Drinking buddies."
Bucky fell silent, then looked at the TV. After a moment, an image of Howard flashed across the screen, and he quickly seized the opportunity to ask, "Is that him?"
"Did you remember something?" Arthur asked immediately.
"There was an image... but I can't remember what exactly happened."
Bucky took a deep breath and then continued eating his meal.
"Slow down, don't choke," Arthur said, feeling concerned. "You're eating too fast. Didn't you just say it tasted bad?"
"My head hurts, and eating helps ease it," Bucky replied. "Because it's so bad."
Arthur's face darkened. "You better watch out; next meal is going to be even worse!"
The boat of friendship is sinking!
When Bucky saw Arthur getting up to leave, he quickly called out, "Next time, can you bring me some drinks?"
"Sure, homemade juice. I promise you'll love it." Arthur turned back and smiled darkly.
Bucky shivered for no reason. Did he say something wrong just now?
