Chapter 196 : The Transmigrator is actually me?
"You actually know me?" Alex Ray looked at Doctor Strange, who was bound in front of him. His face was full of surprise and confusion.
He had never set foot in this universe before. So why did this universe's Stephen Strange seem so familiar with him?
Various possibilities flashed through Alex's mind.
Could it be that this Strange really had the Time Stone and used it to observe events in other universes—thus learning of his existence?
Or had Strange once possessed his variant's body through some kind of dreamwalking method and learned about him that way?
Seeing the confusion on Alex's face, Doctor Strange couldn't help but feel a strange sense of joy.
Just moments ago, he had been frustrated thanks to Peter's antics, but seeing Alex flustered gave him a strange sense of relief.
"Alex Ray, there are things you don't know too." Strange thought to himself.
He had long been dissatisfied with Alex's ever-unpredictable demeanor.
When Strange didn't respond, Alex asked again, unable to hold back: "How do you know me?" His voice carried a mix of doubt and anticipation.
Strange looked up at him, amusement flashing in his eyes. "Guess," he said with a cryptic smile.
Alex stared at Strange's mysterious expression but didn't get angry.
"I won't guess. If you're not going to tell me, then I'll leave. Without me, you'll probably be stuck here for about a month," he said calmly.
As he spoke, a portal flickered to life behind him, swirling with arcane energy—a silent threat that he could leave at any time.
Strange's expression shifted to alarm at the sight.
"Alright! I'll tell you, okay?" Strange said hurriedly. "The last time we met was after the war. But just like you said… you really don't remember it now."
His voice held an air of helplessness, as though even he struggled to make sense of the timeline.
Alex paused, his hand hovering near the portal. At last, he dispelled it and turned back toward Strange, contemplating his words.
Then it clicked.
In the future, he must've traveled back to the time of the Thanos War—the very same mission when the Avengers used time travel to collect the Infinity Stones.
But there was something off.
The Avengers should've traveled through the past of their main timeline, Alex thought. So why did they end up in mine?
In his own universe, the Avengers had long since been crushed—scattered, broken, or dead. They were a relic of the past.
So why would a future Strange or any Avenger visit his timeline?
Had something gone wrong with the multiverse?
Alex's brows furrowed as he tried to piece it together. If his future self had traveled back and influenced events, it would explain why Tony Stark was still alive in this universe.
The truth dawned on him.
The time traveler was me all along.
Still deep in thought, Alex turned to Strange again. "Did I—did he—say anything else? Maybe something for me?"
Knowing his own personality, Alex was sure that if anything important had happened in the future, he would've left some kind of message for his past self.
Strange scratched his chin, trying to recall. "He did. He told me to tell you to save someone. A guy named Martin Lee, and two people close to him. Said they were in Hell's Kitchen."
Alex narrowed his eyes at the name.
Martin Lee. It sounded vaguely familiar, like someone he should know—but he couldn't place it.
Who was this man? And why had his future self made a point to bring him up?
If his future self had gone out of his way to mention him, then this Martin Lee had definitely gotten himself into a heap of trouble.
And what about the two unnamed people near him? Why not mention them by name?
This only deepened Alex's suspicion.
Whatever the case, he decided: once he returned, he would have his network in Hell's Kitchen launch a full search for Martin Lee.
He needed to know what made this man so important—and why he would be the one to intervene.
Strange's voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Hey, come on. Help me get out of these webs already."
Alex blinked and glanced over. Doctor Strange was still wrapped in Peter's silk.
Of course, Alex didn't actually believe the webs were truly restraining him—Strange could escape if he wanted to.
But he didn't refuse the request. With a casual wave, a stream of glowing magic sliced through the strands.
"That's why I hate mischievous kids the most," Strange muttered, rubbing his wrists.
Alex rolled his eyes. "You say that, but you clearly let him off easy. Don't act like you actually lost to Peter."
Strange stopped pretending.
He didn't ask how Alex knew about his humiliation—he was used to Alex's omniscient air by now.
Sighing, he admitted, "I don't know who that kid learned from, but he insisted on saving those people. He even swiped my Sling Ring! Ruthless little bastard."
Alex couldn't help but chuckle.
Peter's recklessness was nothing new. His heart was in the right place, even if his execution was… dramatic.
"I just hope that kid can handle it. The longer he delays, the worse the multiversal instability will get," Strange said with visible concern.
He knew Peter was powerful, brave, and full of conviction—but youth made mistakes. And in this case, mistakes could tear reality apart.
"Alright, alright, enough. My apprentice will handle it. I'll step in if necessary," Alex cut him off.
He remembered the wager he had with Spider-Man 2099. If Strange interfered, it would ruin his promise.
Strange nodded, visibly relieved. He trusted Alex.
"Let's go meet this universe's Tony," Alex said, changing the subject. He was very curious about the version of Tony Stark who had survived in this branch of reality.
Strange shook his head. "You go. I'm heading back to Kamar-Taj. I need to see if there's a better way."
Alex didn't argue. As Strange turned to leave the mirror dimension, he was just about to follow when Strange paused.
"Oh, by the way," Strange said slyly, "you once said something… that the World Destroyer and his beloved wife would appear in the Illuminati?"
Alex froze.
His mind went blank for a moment.
He understood every word individually—but when strung together like that, they made no sense.
"The hell?" Alex muttered.
Strange gave him a cunning grin, his eyes sparkling with amusement. That was his little revenge—for all the times Alex made him feel clueless.
With a final wave, Strange disappeared into the swirling folds of the mirror dimension.
Leaving Alex standing there, puzzled and alone.
