Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Sanctuary for Mutants

"Take this guy back and interrogate him properly. Let me know if you uncover anything else," Han Yu said, gesturing to the unconscious mutant assassin. He addressed Natasha, who stood nearby. Interrogation wasn't something Han Yu cared to learn or involve himself in—that was a job better left to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Without hesitation, Natasha contacted the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents outside via her comms, instructing them to come in and take the mutant assassin away.

"Mr. Han," Natasha said, "I'll return. I hope we can collaborate smoothly next time."

Han Yu gave a faint smile and waved dismissively. "Take care."

With that, Han Yu turned and walked back into the shop, snatching his phone from Quicksilver amidst the latter's exaggerated groans.

A quick glance at the game stats told the story: 0 kills, 9 deaths. Han Yu realized that all of Quicksilver's earlier boasting was empty bravado. He had briefly entertained the idea that Quicksilver might have a knack for gaming, but it seemed his only real talent was trash-talking.

Seeing that Han Yu had no intention of continuing their conversation, Natasha muttered a few words into her earpiece and gave him one last meaningful look before leaving.

As the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents began to withdraw from the area, Han Yu breathed a sigh of relief. He had no desire to antagonize them—at least not while they still operated as a force for good.

"Now that the timeline has shifted, I wonder if S.H.I.E.L.D. has already been infiltrated by Hydra. If they have, it might be a good idea to step in and help clean up that mess. And if mutants really start appearing in large numbers, those two figures should show up as well!"

Han Yu mulled over these thoughts while casually tapping away at his phone. From his memories, he knew that at least half of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s members were secretly Hydra agents. The organization was essentially at war with itself, blissfully unaware of how deeply Hydra had infiltrated.

Two distinct figures surfaced in his mind.

One was a bald man in a wheelchair, radiating a calm and gentle demeanor. His mutant ability was telepathy, and among all mutants with mental powers, he was undoubtedly the strongest.

The other was a god-like figure floating in the air, effortlessly causing the earth to levitate with a wave of his hand and commanding all metals with absolute precision.

These two were Professor X, Charles Xavier, and Magneto, Erik Lehnsherr. Among mutants, they were the most famous. According to Han Yu's memories, the two had first established the X-Men's academy. However, due to ideological differences, Magneto eventually broke away and formed the Brotherhood of Mutants, declaring his mission to liberate mutants from human oppression and persecution.

While lost in thought, Han Yu continued playing his game. Ultron and Quicksilver remained beside him, chattering away. He didn't hear a word of it. Suddenly, he stood up.

Both Ultron and Quicksilver jumped in surprise. Was he fed up with their noise and about to lash out?

"Time to get to work!" Han Yu announced.

Without further explanation, he grabbed Ultron and dragged him toward the workshop.

Quicksilver was left bewildered for a moment before quickly following behind. "Hey, wait for me!"

Inside the workshop, Ultron and Quicksilver stood in confusion as they watched Han Yu. He had raised both hands, and emerald-green energy, as fine as thread, streamed from his palms, weaving together in intricate patterns.

"What's the boss doing?" Quicksilver whispered to Ultron. He had started calling Han Yu "boss" recently. "Boss" felt more casual and suited his personality better than "owner." It also made him feel closer to Han Yu, even though Han Yu likely didn't care.

"He seems to be constructing something, but he keeps making adjustments," Ultron replied, unsure of what exactly Han Yu was working on. However, seeing the serious expression on Han Yu's face, he refrained from asking questions. Quicksilver also chose to remain silent and observe.

Though the two were usually full of banter around Han Yu, they knew when to be serious—and now was one of those times.

Five minutes passed, and a look of joy suddenly appeared on Han Yu's face. "It's done!" he announced.

Between his palms floated a fragment of a faintly glowing, purple energy blade—something that seemed eerily familiar.

"Is that a piece of the assassin's energy sword from earlier?"

Ultron's advanced computational mind immediately identified the origin of the object in Han Yu's hands.

"Exactly," Han Yu confirmed with a nod. "I've reconstructed the energy molecules as much as possible. I also took a small skin sample from him when we fought. I need you to analyze his DNA and pinpoint the differences that set him apart from normal humans. Once you've done that, create a program that can track others with this gene."

Ultron blinked in surprise at the lengthy request. "Boss, are you actually interested in their abilities? Don't tell me you're planning to recruit all these kinds of people into the store. If we do that, S.H.I.E.L.D. will definitely label us as a terrorist organization."

It wasn't that Ultron feared S.H.I.E.L.D.—they couldn't destroy him even with all their firepower. But he found unnecessary conflicts troublesome. Avoiding a war was preferable, and he had no interest in picking unnecessary fights.

After all, Ultron had begun to realize that his synthetic body allowed him to assimilate into human society. Externally, he could look entirely human while remaining a robot inside. He was already considering experiencing the indulgent pleasures of human life—war was far from appealing.

Quicksilver also looked at Han Yu with similar apprehension. Nobody liked the idea of war, especially him; his parents had died because of one. Fights were one thing, but war was an entirely different matter—something far more destructive and tragic.

Seeing the seriousness in their eyes, as if they were prepared to give him a long speech against the idea, Han Yu shook his head and chuckled.

"Believe it or not, I have no interest in their abilities. I've learned enough about them to know they're called mutants. They're humans, but with genetic mutations that grant them abilities. Even with their powers, they're still biologically human—vulnerable to knives and bullets."

"The mutant assassin tonight was a warning. If we let mutants like him continue to act unchecked, it could ignite a terrifying war in the future."

Han Yu paused, noticing that Ultron and Quicksilver were listening intently. Encouraged, he continued.

"Humans, after all, are a very xenophobic species. When there are only one or two mutants in the public eye, especially if they're doing good deeds, they might be seen as heroes. But the moment one of them makes a mistake, that single misstep can destroy public goodwill toward all mutants. And if their numbers grow and they form a group or even a community, ordinary people will resist their existence even more."

Han Yu let out a soft sigh. The existence of mutants was indeed tragic. They were forced to accept their mutated nature and endure the wary or hostile gazes of others. While having superpowers might seem like a dream to most adolescents, it often turned out to be a burden.

"That's why I need to gather them together before chaos breaks out. They need guidance—someone to teach them how to control their abilities and understand themselves. Only then can they avoid losing their way."
