Chapter 10: Chapter 10: New Friends

"Huh? It's already over?"

"I want to see more; it was beginning to become interesting."

"Interesting, my ass. You just want to watch a woman in tight clothes swinging here and there."

Veins started popping out of Makarov's head. He enlarged his hands and punched the second guy until he blasted into the guild hall.

"Well, I remember that my wife is waiting for me. Bye."

"Me too, I should go so as not to make her wait for too long."

After that, the crowd magically dispersed. Even the hole Makarov created was also repaired as if nothing had happened.

Makarov sighed and turned to Gwen: "Sorry for the guys. They are just too enthusiastic, but in essence, they aren't really bad."

Gwen waved to him and said: "It's okay, don't worry. As long as they don't cross the border, I would just crack one or two of their bones."

Makarov shuddered and felt sorry for the men in the guild. Anyway, he was a good and respectable old man, and this had nothing to do with him.

He coughed a little: "Ahem, okay, since you said so, now let's talk about my evaluation of you."

"Physically, you are very strong—stronger than most mages who use enhancement or strengthening magic. Your weakness is your lack of a long-range way of attack."

After Makarov finished speaking, before he could continue, he saw Gwen raising her hand towards him and then shooting something at him.

He didn't feel any malice or danger from her, but still, he felt that it might be a little troublesome if the thing landed on him, so he dodged.

He then looked at her with questions on his face. Seeing it, Gwen replied: "This is my long-range attack. Not really destructive as it wouldn't hurt, but it's good for restraining people."

"I didn't use it against you as you would definitely dodge it, and I just wanted to have a physical fight."

Makarov nodded and then again felt sorry for the men in the guild as the woman seemed really violent. He bent down, picking up the sticky, web-like substance Gwen had shot toward him.

The material clung to his hand, stretchy and surprisingly durable, with an almost elastic pull as he tried to stretch it further. It was really a perfect thing for binding people.

"This… What exactly is this?" Makarov asked. Again, he didn't feel any magical energy from it. It was as if this thing came directly from her body.

If that was the case, he would have to suspect if Gwen was human or a monster—not that it would change her status as a guild member, though.

"It's my web fluid," Gwen said, her tone casual. "A unique ability I use for long-range attacks and crowd control. It's non-lethal, extremely versatile, and can trap even some stronger opponents if they're not careful."

Seeing that there was still some doubt on his face about her ability, she decided to partially reveal where her current strength came from, though not her deep secret about absorbing souls and all.

She said: "Well, to be more precise, I'm a normal human, but after being bitten by some strange spider, I gained spider-like abilities—abilities like Spider-Sense, wall crawling, super strength, web shooting, and all."

Makarov nodded thoughtfully: "I see, a little bit like Take-Over magic, but this one is permanent."

After Makarov said Take-Over magic, Gwen remembered it. It was the magic used by the Strauss siblings—Mirajane able to take demons' souls, Elfman taking monster souls, and Lisanna taking animals' souls—wait a minute.

After thinking about Lisanna's ability, Gwen felt that she was a little dumb.

Her own ability was to absorb the souls of other creatures and gain their abilities, talents, traits, characteristics, and all. The stronger the soul, the slower it took to absorb it. If not, and she absorbed it forcefully, the soul might even take control.

Then what about animals? Gwen didn't believe that animals had stronger souls than her—at least most of them, like ants, flies, and many others.

If so, will she gain things like, as some people said, the ability of ants to lift 50 times their strength, frogs' jumping ability, and all?

Even if she couldn't due to her having stronger physical ability than them, what about those that had better abilities than her, like the vision of eagles, the regeneration ability of salamanders to regrow limbs, and many other animals?

If it was really like she thought, then haha, this would become easier for her. No, she was already excited thinking about the possibility that she almost forgot about Makarov.

Makarov obviously saw that she was distracted and in a daze. He coughed, making her regain her senses, and then she responded.

"Sorry, I was a little distracted thinking about the nature of my ability when you said Take-Over magic. I think my ability is a little bit like that. I think I should be able to gain the abilities of most animals."

Makarov nodded, showing his understanding. He then said: "Okay, let's not talk about this. Concerning your ability to take missions, you are able to take any mission on the mission board."

"Still, I suggest you start with low-level missions as the thing that matters the most is the experience one accumulates during the time."

Gwen nodded thoughtfully at Makarov's suggestion. She wasn't exactly happy with the idea of starting with low-level missions, but she understood what Makarov meant. Gaining experience in a controlled environment was better than jumping into something too dangerous too early.

Makarov was happy seeing her showing understanding. It wasn't easy for him—almost all the guild members didn't understand his worries and wanted to jump for high-level missions. He was happy for the guild to finally have a member with brains.

Also, he was very curious about Gwen's origin and her ability to create a portal, but he still didn't ask. He just said: "It's good since you understand. So, how about a party tonight? I'm sure that it'll be good for you to come into contact with the rest of the guild members."

Gwen thought about it. Although she was curious and wanted to talk to Leila about what she thought, there was no rush. There were still 28 days before she could start absorbing another soul.

She smiled and nodded at Makarov's suggestion: "A party sounds good. It'll give me a chance to meet everyone better and, who knows, maybe I'll learn a thing or two from them."

Makarov nodded with satisfaction. Anyway, the welcome party they had yesterday couldn't be considered since Gwen wasn't here—definitely not because he wanted another party.

Gwen could more or less guess what Makarov wanted and just shook her head at the old man—hopeless.

As Makarov began walking toward the back of the guild hall to prepare for the party, Gwen stood for a moment, watching him go.

She was thinking if she should go back to change her clothes with the sneakers being useless and all, but then she finally just decided to go with the flow.

Anyway, she didn't truly mind, and neither did the guild members who were fighting all the time. She could already hear the chatter and laughter from the rest of the guild members.

She also returned. Then, scanning the hall, she walked over to the bar where two women were chatting. They both turned and waved her over with smiles.

It definitely wasn't because she found them beautiful, but just because it was easier to talk to someone of the same gender.

One of the women waved at her and said: "Hey, Gwen! You're partying with us, right?"

"Of course," Gwen replied with a grin. "I wouldn't miss it. I was very busy yesterday, but now I'm all free."

One of the women giggled, which was a little cute, and said: "Okay, I'm Naca. Nice to meet you."

'What a strange name.' Although she thought so, Gwen didn't voice it. It wasn't necessary. She said: "I'm also happy to meet you, though you already know, I'm Gwen."

There was no way she would call herself Gwendolyn. Whether it was the original or her, they didn't really like the full name as they found it too long. Plus, this was the Fairy Tail world. Who knew what kind of voodoo magic she would face that required knowing a person's full name?

The other woman, with long dark hair and a calm demeanor, extended her hand. "I'm Luna. Nice to meet you, Gwen. I have seen your fight with the old man earlier. You are now one of the strongest women that I know."

Gwen chuckled lightly and shook Luna's hand. "Oh, you are flattering too much. I still have things to learn."

Yeah, thinking of the likes of Juvia, Mirajane, Lucy, Erza, Cana, Wendy, or the top-level ones like Dimaria, Brandish, or Irene, she wasn't worth mentioning.

Just like that, Makarov announced the official welcoming party for Gwen to Fairy Tail, while the latter was also infected by the guild's atmosphere.

END OF THE CHAPTER

Okay, I know some of you would definitely not like the idea of her absorbing animal souls as that would make her powerful very quickly. But seriously, I would rather have my protagonist be too powerful than nerfing her for the sake of the plot.

Plus, if you think about it carefully, no matter the strength she would gain from those animals, it would probably not even reach the Thor of the Cinematic Universe, which you know could only be called mid-level in Gwen's current universe.

Now, if you accept my idea, give suggestions about animals you want her to have abilities from and why. I'm not really well-versed concerning the different special abilities of animals.
