Married to my suspect

Chapter 91: CHAPTER NINETY ONE

DANIELLE'S POV

Marissa shot upward immediately I stepped out of the elevator, eyes filling with relief, and I rushed to her, panicked at her expression. "What's going on? Did something happen?"

She shook her head and took my hand. "No. I was asked to look for a file, but I couldn't find it. Where do you save the files?"

I went to my desktop and sat down. "What file were you looking for?" I glanced at the clock. "Has he gone for his 12:30 appointment?"

Her eyes widened, and she stood up from where she had been bending towards the table and shook her head. "I totally forgot about that." She whispered.

"Don't worry about it. I'll tell him myself." I felt for the girl. She was a shy mouse of a girl that was doing her internship, and it was obvious she wasn't very used to being in formal settings like this one. The fact that Jonathan was very intimidating whenever he asked for anything didn't help as well. I wondered what had made him approve her employment as everyone else had determined to let her go.

I knocked gently on the door and entered, and tiptoed to the table, surprised. I got closer to his desk and just stared at his sleeping form. He still had his coat on and his air conditioner was off, a rare event. I didn't even think I'd ever seen Jonathan sleeping at work. I even doubted he had actually rested this morning. I frowned when I saw the empty cups of coffee on the table and slowly backed out. He was probably just tired from the overworking he'd been doing all his life.

"Danielle." I turned and went to meet Jonathan at his groggy call, my eyes widening at his red eyes and pale skin as he lifted his head from the table with strain, it looked like. My hand moved before my mind could process it as I put my hand gently on his forehead. Unsurprisingly, his forehead was burning hot.

"You're burning hot. How do you feel?" I asked gently.

He closed his eyes. "Like a thousand hammers are pounding into my skull. Can I get another cup of coffee?"

I eyed him. "You need medicine or even a hospital, not coffee. When will you start taking care of yourself?" I went behind his desk and started opening his cabinet but stopped when Jonathan grabbed my hands with his almost hot hands. "What are you doing?" He asked.

"Do you have a medicine cabinet or some emergency pills you can take for your fever?"

He nodded slowly. "I think so. Somewhere in the bathroom."

I headed to the bathroom and didn't have to check for long before finding what I was looking for. I went back into the office. "Apart from the sausage you said you ate, have you eaten anything today?"

He stretched his hand. "Just get me the ibuprofen. I can eat later."

I considered doing that, but I shook my head. "Let's get something in you first, then I'll give it to you." I hesitated. "I think you should actually go home to rest better."

He shook his head and winced like that action had caused him pain. "I have meetings I have to attend to as well as work that has piled up for the past few days. I've been out of the office for the past two days."

I rolled my eyes, ensuring he caught it. "Yeah right. And when you break down even worse than this, who will run the company. I can always reschedule the meetings you have today and tomorrow, even for the rest of the week. Neither of them are urgent. I can handle things here on my own and give you a brief when you get better. Marissa and I can keep things going well for the few days you'll be away."

Jonathan shook his head. "Let's talk later. Give me the pills first."

I shook my head and pressed the intercom. "Can I get a quick snack from the break room please?"

Marissa replied, and I thanked her and cut the connection. "Marissa will be back soon with something. Aside from your head, how do you feel?"

"Horrible. Didn't you go for your break?" He asked groggily.

"I did." I responded and went to grab a napkin and fill a basin with water from the bathroom. I remembered those times when I would feel sick and my dad would bathe my forehead with cold water. It had felt good, and I believed it had made me feel even better than the pills I'd been forced to take.

"How was it? The meeting." He asked when I came back with the basin with water.

"Can you get up? You will feel better if you lie down in the room." I said, referring to the room that was en-suite in his office.

He didn't argue, and even though I wanted to assist him inside, I didn't. I followed after him with the basin to find him seated.

"What's that in your hand?" He asked, gesturing to the basin.

I looked at it. "Water. Since you feel both hot and cold, this water will help you regulate your temperature."

"Just water?" He asked and I arched my eyebrows. "Of course. It's not rocket science. Is this the first time you are getting a fever?" I asked teasingly and dipped the napkin into the water.

"Nope. Just the water part. Ibuprofen and a few hours of rest always does wonders."

I nodded slowly. Obviously, there had been a reason he had been brought up in the orphanage and eventually adopted. "This will make you feel even better."

There was a knock on the door, and I turned to see Marissa looking inside through the space the unlocked door left. I quickly dropped the basin and went to meet her, closing the door behind me.

She looked abashed. "I'm sorry. I knocked on the office door, but you weren't responding, so I came in."

I nodded and collected the tray that held cookies and sandwich in her hand. "Of course. No problem."

She nodded towards the tray. "Should I have gotten something else?"

I shook my head. "No. This is okay, thank you." She nodded and left, and I took the tray inside the room and placed it in front of Jonathan.

"Let's try a few bites, then you can have the pill."

Jonathan nodded and picked up the sandwich, then looked at me. "Are you going to watch me eat?"

I pursed my lips. "Of course not. Let me know when you're done so I can use the water. I'll go and reschedule the appointments."

"Thank you, and I'm sorry for the stress." He said and I nodded. I waited until he had swallowed the first bite of the sandwich before leaving with a satisfied nod.
