Chapter 90: CHAPTER NINETY
Lucas stood up when he saw me approaching, but I waved him down. "Don't get up. Sorry for coming late, I had some little tasks to quickly take care of."
Lucas smiled at me. "Of course you did. How is work? Did you have fun at your cute little intimate holiday you took with your husband?"
I rolled my eyes. "Let's really not start this here again. It's been a while and I've missed you. How have you been? How about work?"
He looked at me then shrugged. "You're right, but you know this is how men bond together. Check your husband, you'll realize that he's also softening towards me. We jab and throw jokes at each other."
I didn't respond to that because I knew it wasn't true. So far, I could confidently say I'd seen Jonathan bond with a few people, me included, and none were under the guise of sarcasm. A waitress came to take our order and Lucas ordered for both of us. I simply nodded when she glanced at me and after about five minutes, my sandwich and matcha was delivered while he'd gotten a coke.
We ate in silence for a while. "How have you been?" I asked Lucas when he didn't stop staring at me as we ate.
He took a sip of his coke. "Good. Not much has been going on but of recent, I've been meeting some old friends from college. We're even playing with the idea of coming together to catch up. No plus ones, unfortunately."
I frowned. "Which friends?" As far as I was concerned, I didn't have many friends I would willingly put myself in the position of meeting after we'd graduation.
"Oh, just a few people here and there. It will be fun to meet again and reminiscence on our stupid college days. Don't you think?"
I nodded while taking a bite of my sandwich. "Depends. I'll probably be busy, though."
Lucas rolled his eyes. "Is your work as a secretary that demanding? Besides, if you're married to a multimillionaire, don't you think it's beneath your level to still be working? Not less as his secretary. Does he take pride in parading you around as one of his employees?"
I sighed. I knew the easy conversation we'd been having wasn't going to last long. It had been the way it had always gone since I'd gotten married. "I took a long sip of my match. "I make the decisions concerning my life. If I wanted to work as a laborer, I would, and everybody should mind their businesses, you included." I was getting tensed up and my voice was getting louder, so I changed the subject. "How about Lillian? I've been trying her number since you called me, but for some reason, it keeps on going to voicemail."
Lucas dropped the cup sharply. "I actually didn't want to mention this to you since you keep acting like I'm merely antagonizing your relationship when I'm just trying to help you. There are so many things you don't know, and I just want to help you before you go in too deep you can't come out."
I looked at the side and rolled my eyes. There went the condescending tone he always used with me and Jonathan again. I glanced at my wristwatch and took the final bites of the sandwich and finished my matcha. "Honestly. I'm not that interested. Besides, I barely made time to come here. I'm packed with work right now." I started getting up.
"I really wanted to see your face, as I've missed you, but I think it's better if I tell you this. One of the guys from college I rain into recently is into investigative journalism and after pressuring him, he told me his next story was on your husband. Trust me, I was shocked when I saw the amount of proof he had on your husband regarding his brother."
I flared up. "Can you please stop? Why do you keep on doing this? At times like this, when we meet, and you're being this unreasonable, I regret meeting you and staying friends with me. Jonathan didn't do anything apart from work hard, especially when his younger brother died and the whole world pointed fingers at him and yet, see how far he has climbed up. I can assure you that whatever proof you think you saw is false. You know what they say, the higher you climb, the faster your enemies grow. You're becoming an enemy I can no longer stand, Lucas."
Lucas' fists were tightened during my litany. "Seems like you also forgot something. Those that are high on top always fall way faster and harder to the ground. I just want to stop you from making a mistake you'll end up regretting."
I shook my head. "You sound unreasonable. You realize that since I entered this season of my life, your script hasn't changed. You just keep on repeating the same things as a mad man. Aren't you tired of this? It feels like everyone else around me is changing while you just intentionally remained in this same spot. It's creepy."
I opened my purse and put a two hundred dollar bill on the table, enough to cover both our foods. I loathed the idea of eating with his money, with his spewing nonsense like that. "Unless you're ready to be reasonable and stop sounding like someone high on drugs, don't contact me again." With that, I walked out of the restaurant. I checked my wristwatch and hastened my steps, I'd spent almost twenty minutes at the restaurant. Hopefully, Jonathan hadn't left yet.
LUCAS' POV
I scrolled on my phone till I got the number I wanted to call. It rang just once before the call was picked.
"What's the next plan?" I asked and she laughed.
"I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Just don't do anything stupid before then."
I finished the coke that was in front of me and poured the ice into my mouth, crunching it between my teeth. I glanced at the dollar bill on the table as I typed in a number I'd kept in my memory for a time like this.
"Hello." A hesitant voice sounded in my ear and I bit into the remaining ice in my mouth.
