Book 10A - The Auction - Chapter 10
I did some fast math.
The price of gear usually went up by a factor of ten for each rarity. So a legendary piece of gear would cost ten thousand times what a common piece would sell for. But then you had to accommodate for the rarity as well as the complimentary stats and passives. If a pair of regular silver earrings was worth six All, that meant these would sell for well over 60,000A, probably closer to a 100,000A. That was way outside the couple thousand All I had in my CB.
I looked over at Miel, who was watching with her arms crossed in front of her chest. It was hard to read the expression on her face, but she was definitely thinking.
"Ah! Ka'zahz has found it!" The ratman swiped, and a pair of three-fingered gloves appeared on the screen.
Aelin gasped when she saw them before he pulled up the name or even the stats.
I groaned.
They were pink.

I didn't have to look at Aelin to know that she was suppressing a squeal. I could feel it as soon as her hand latched on to my arm and began to squeeze like a shaking vise.

"I can tell it's cool, but..." I looked at the Rhastan. "We're students. We don't have that kind of All. We won't have that much until long after we've graduated."
The vendor looked confused as he gestured at Aelin. "Ka'zahz thought that you wanted to give the beautiful lady the best." He sighed a little too dramatically. "Ka'zahz sees that was a mistake. Ka'zahz apologizes again for calling attention to the young master's ineptitude."
That was so smooth it was hard to be upset at the insult. But just those two items alone were worth a quarter of a million All. I didn't know how he could have possibly thought that we had that kind of wealth.
"How much?" Miel broke me out of my thoughts.
"Ka'zahz would normally charge 500,000A—"
I choked.
"But Ka'zahz feels bad for calling attention to the young master's inability to provide for his woman." There was a twinkle in his eye. "Three hundred thousand All."
That was two and a half times what they were worth, and it was still way outside any budget I could have dreamt of in the next decade.
Miel eyed me, then looked back at the vendor. "I assume you have the papers for authenticity?"
"Ka'zahz would never deal in stolen goods!" The Rhastan pounded his right fist over his heart. "Of course I have the papers!"
I caught the second time he slipped and didn't refer to himself in the third person. I wondered just how much of this was an act. Probably most, if I had to bet.
"I hear Klix is tearing apart the Dining District because of gear trafficking." She nodded at us. "I wouldn't want their adventure to end before it had a chance to start."
"Here are the papers! Registered with the Dispatchers and verified at every trade." He pulled up two lists.
I was impressed. I'd heard rumors that Legendary gear was registered with the Dispatcher's Hub to reduce theft since the gear was worth so much. But I'd never seen the paperwork before.
"Looks good." Miel nodded. "I have one more favor to ask." The Scarlet smiled. "I'm sure an upstanding merchant would be willing to include it with the items."
Aelin's jaw dropped.
I realized my mouth was open as well.
"Ka'zahz loves to help when he can!" The ratman smiled.
"We need more gear, but I don't want to bring my charges to a booth only to learn that they don't keep the paperwork to prove authenticity." She nodded towards the other vendors. "If you could point out which ones you trust, I'll be sure to tell them you sent us."
"Of course! Ka'zahz would hate for his favorite customers to get into trouble!" He brought up a map of the vendor booths. "Now where do I start…"
