Chapter 33: The Misunderstanding
Sarah sat by the window in the library, her thoughts racing. Lucas's recent compliments and his unusual behavior had left her confused. Does he like me? she wondered.
She shook her head, trying to dismiss the idea. No, that can't be true. Maybe he's just being nice.
Her gaze drifted outside the window, where she spotted Lucas standing near the fountain with Ava. They were talking and laughing, looking comfortable around each other. Ava even nudged him playfully, and he smiled in return.
"Of course," Sarah whispered to herself. "He probably likes Ava. They're so close." feeling relieved to see them together.
In another part of the campus, Lucas and Ava were sitting under a tree. Lucas fidgeted nervously with a piece of paper in his hand.
"Alright, Ava, be honest. I need your feedback on this."
Ava smirked, leaning back against the tree. "Go ahead. Let's hear it."
Lucas cleared his throat and began, "Sarah, I've waited so long to tell you this. You're the most amazing person I've ever met. You light up every room you walk into, and—"
"Stop!" Ava interrupted, holding up her hand dramatically. "Too cliché. You need to sound more natural."
Lucas groaned. "Fine. Let me try again." He adjusted his posture and started over. "Sarah, you mean so much to me. I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I fell for you. I can't imagine my life without you."
Ava tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Better. But don't say 'I fell for you.' It sounds like you tripped." She chuckled. "Say something more heartfelt, like, 'I realized I love you.'"
Lucas sighed, running a hand through his hair. "This is harder than I thought. What if I mess it up?"
Ava smiled warmly. "You won't. Just speak from your heart. And remember, Sarah knows you. She'll see how genuine you are."
Lucas nodded, her words giving him a bit of confidence. "Thanks, Ava. You're a lifesaver."
Meanwhile, Sarah walked toward the hotel where Kane and Selena's party was being planned. She wasn't attending the event but had been curious about the venue. To her surprise, she spotted Lucas talking to the staff, arranging something. Her heart sank. So he's helping Kane?
She turned away quickly, not wanting to be noticed, and felt a lump form in her throat. Why would he do this? she thought bitterly. Maybe I was right about him all along.
As she walked toward the exit, trying to hide her emotions, William noticed her. He was at the hotel for his own reasons but couldn't ignore Sarah's troubled expression.
"Hey," he called out, walking up to her. "What's wrong? You look upset."
Sarah hesitated, then sighed. "Nothing. It's just… Lucas. I thought—" She stopped mid-sentence, shaking her head. "Never mind."
William tilted his head, clearly unconvinced. "You don't seem fine to me. Come on, let's sit and talk."
They found a quiet corner in the lobby, and Sarah reluctantly explained her misunderstanding. William listened patiently, then said, "You're jumping to conclusions. Lucas is probably not helping Kane. And even if he is, you should ask him directly instead of assuming things."
Sarah frowned, still unsure. "But what if I'm right?"
William shrugged. "Then you'll know. But you don't want to ruin things with Lucas over a misunderstanding, do you?"
His words made Sarah think. She nodded slowly. "You're right. Maybe I should talk to him."
William smiled. "Good. Now, stop worrying about it and enjoy your evening. "Sarah, overthinking burns more calories than coffee. Relax. You've got this."
As Sarah left the hotel, her thoughts were conflicted. She wasn't sure what the truth was, but William's advice gave her a sense of clarity she didn't have before.
Meanwhile, Lucas looked at Ava. "One more time?" he asked, grinning nervously.
Ava rolled her eyes but smiled. "Alright, but this is the last rehearsal. I'm starting to think I might fall for you if you keep practicing like this."
They both laughed, unaware of the misunderstanding brewing in Sarah's mind.
