Love is Worth Waiting for

Chapter 4: Commission

Sunny made Morgan's coffee and asked Aiko to bring it to her while he went through several of his answers.

Sunny mentally prepared himself, grabbed Morgan's order and walked out of the kitchen wearing an amicable expression.

He made his way over to the table she sat at and placed two sets of waffles in front of her.

"Here are your waffles, call out if you want anything else." He smiled at her and attempted to leave, hoping that she wouldn't stop him again.

"Wait," She called, crushing his hopes. He steeled himself and turned around.

"Yes?" He answered

"You also sold memories here, right?" She asked innocently, but Sunny felt his heart drop as his fears came true.

"Yes we do! Would you like to order something?" He was bitter about the situation, but he wasn't going to pass up on the opportunity so he enthusiastically replied. Something about money made it impossible for him to say no.

"...Can you make a charm fit for a saint?" She asked.

'That's a bad question for me.' He couldn't lie, so his options to answer her question were limited.

He quickly went over his options. Sunny didn't want to sell himself too short, not that he really could because of how direct her question was. Her opinion on his work directly correlated to the business' success. What opinion holds more weight than the princess of the great clan known for its memory crafting.

Sunny really didn't want to fail, especially considering his face was already known, his next best option would be to start up again in the Ravenheart, and he didn't have the friendliest past with Song.

Of course, none of them remembered, but he was uncomfortable with it either way.

Eventually he decided to show his abilities to be good enough to warrant praise, but not enough for Morgan to forcefully bring him to Valor.

He wore a hesitant expression and replied, "I might be able to. It depends on the details of the order and will cost a lot."

Nothing he said was false. Sunny was able to craft memories befitting a saint, but if she asked for him to make a charm with an impossible enchantment he wouldn't be able to.

'I already have my reputation of crafting a memory for Saint Roan so It shouldn't be too out of place.'

A dangerous light glinted in Morgan's eyes, "Oh?"

'Shit,' He didn't know what but he said something wrong. Well she had asked the wrong question, that was the answer that downplayed his skills the most.

"I heard your memories were weak, but had the enchantments the commissioner wanted."

"Yes, they can be comparatively weak for their class, but I can't enchant a memory with an enchantment I don't know how to do." They could be weak, but they could also be strong.

He continued to speak, wary of any more questions that he couldn't deflect.

"Also, a comparatively weak transcendent charm might be fit for a saint, if it's specialised in one area it can be fit for that perfectly. A charm that has broad enchantments and a comparatively weaker strength could be spread too thin to be of any meaningful use."

Morgan looked at him while he spoke, it took a lot of willpower to keep calm under the pressure.

'Even without the presence, she still exudes so much pressure.' He had his fair share of brushes with Morgan in the past, and she still seemed so sharp and so menacing to him even as a saint himself.

She stared at him for a moment and then smiled. "I would like to do some business with you then."

Sunny smiled brightly outwardly and bitterly inwardly. He was excited at the prospect of money, but still felt adverse to the whole situation. He wasn't going to enjoy walking on eggshells, that's for sure.

"That's great! If you come back after the cafe closes we can discuss the details." At least he had some time to prepare.

"No…" Her words took him by surprise.

"What?"

"I'm just going to stay here until closing time." Sunny was confused but he soon accepted it.

'There shouldn't be too many more customers so losing one table shouldn't matter.'

"I guess that works." He was still confused but he didn't let it show, "I'll come over some time later then."

She stared at him once more and nodded. "I'll be waiting."

***

Morgan watched the master's retreating figure before turning to her waffles with a sigh. She had a longer talk this time but couldn't he just stand there to let her look at his face all day?

Morgan wouldn't admit it, but the master was almost exactly her type. She was surrounded by the gruff and burly knights of Valor, so she didn't see men of his aesthetic often.

She distracted herself by digging into the waffles and her eyes widened.

She wasn't expecting much because the cafe had gained its reputation from the appearance of its owner and not from the quality of its food, but the waffles were far better than any she'd ever had before. She hadn't had many waffles before so that wasn't a high bar, but she didn't know they could be done that well.

Suddenly glad that she ordered two servings, Morgan barely held herself back from wolfing them down and maintained some level of decorum while eating.

'He really just keeps getting better and better doesn't he.' She chuckled.

He could cook, apparently make memories of the transcendent rank, was ascended and most of all, had a pretty face.

Despite her efforts to distract herself, her thoughts inevitably returned to him as she watched him serve other customers out of the corner of her eye.

Morgan was somewhat disappointed in her true nature, and knew she'd be reeling for days afterwards once the insidious influence on her mind finally faded. But for now, she simply enjoyed the view.

Hours passed like minutes and in the blink of an eye, it was closing time.
