Chapter 474: New Neighbor (Part 3)
"No need, actually many workers also hope to work on weekends.
After all, we get paid by the day, unlike those office workers in white-collar jobs."
Luke looked at these Asian faces and could understand.
He thought about it carefully, but still refused Zhang Jianmin's suggestion. He wanted to finish work early and move into the new house sooner.
But he was worried that construction on weekends would disturb the neighbors' rest.
From Monday to Friday, everyone is at work, so construction noise has less impact.
On weekends, adults and children are at home resting. Continuing construction might lead to complaints and unnecessary trouble.
Luke certainly didn't want to leave a bad impression on his neighbors before moving into the community.
Luke lingered at the construction site for an hour, preparing to leave around noon.
He walked out of the yard and was about to get in his car when a Porsche drove over and stopped next to him.
"Hi, Captain Lee." The window rolled down, revealing a white-haired elderly gentleman around seventy, wearing black-framed glasses.
Luke thought for a moment before recalling the person's identity, the famous writer and screenwriter Romit Bull.
Previously, Luke had investigated a homicide case, where the crime scene was at a movie set. The film was called "The Missing Lover."
During filming, the male lead actually went missing. After a search, his body was found in a pit on the set, mirroring the movie script's plot.
Later, the film's leading actress was also strangled in bed, again mirroring the movie's plot.
This bizarre case caused quite a stir at the time, and the novel "The Missing Lover" soared in sales.
Romit Bull was one of the few beneficiaries of the case. The police even considered him a suspect, but investigation later ruled him out.
Luke said, "Mr. Bull, long time no see. How come you're here?"
"I live in this neighborhood, shouldn't I be asking why you're here?"
Luke pondered, "I remember when I visited you last, you seemed to live in another community."
"Haha, surely you didn't think I only had one house?" Romit Bull chuckled,
"Since my novel regained popularity, there have been many enthusiastic fans around my home. I even have to swim in full pants. Can you understand that feeling?
So, I moved here. It's quieter, and not many people know me.
What about you? Why are you back here?"
Luke pointed behind him, "I just bought the house behind me and am renovating it."
"Ooh, you have a good eye. The feng shui of this house is great."
"Feng shui? You study feng shui?" Luke looked at this elderly white man, feeling a sense of mixed cultural influences.
"Hey, I'm a professional writer, especially a mystery novelist. I need to accumulate a lot of writing material, understanding various cultures and customs around the world. You don't think novel plots appear out of thin air, do you?"
Luke nodded, "I'm glad to have such a knowledgeable neighbor. Let me treat you to afternoon tea someday."
Romit Bull smiled, "That's what I wanted to say too.
Talking with a promising young detective like you can spark new creative inspiration.
Why wait for another day?
How about we have lunch together? I know a great Chinese restaurant nearby, I'm sure you'll like it."
"Sorry, I can't today. I have other things to handle." Luke's family is preparing to go to Hawaii tomorrow, so he needs to pack today to avoid forgetting anything.
"OK, let's arrange it another time." Romit Bull handed Luke a business card and drove away.
As Luke watched the departing Porsche, he got the feeling that this elderly man was a bit overly enthusiastic.
Perhaps the old man hoped to gain more writing material from him, as writing is inspired by life, and mystery novels need to be based on real cases for creative adaptation.
