Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 386: Traces_2

A single Mexican burrito wasn't enough for Luke. He quickly finished it and grabbed a slice of pizza, some fries, and a cola. After eating all of that, he was barely seventy percent full. Fortunately, he wasn't hungry anymore. He thought to himself, "I'll just have a snack now and deal with dinner later."

After Reid finished eating, he wiped his hands and looked at Luke inquiringly, "Any progress in this morning's investigation?"

Luke yawned, "I spent the entire morning at the Southern District. I visited the night shift detective department, the forensics lab, chatted with the deceased's partner, and finally went to the forensics room to examine the body of the deceased.

In the meanwhile, I also contacted the deceased's family to gather some information, but they have not arrived yet.

While chatting with the deceased's partner, Timo Jensen, both Jackson and I felt he was hiding something. I got Raymond and Jenny to keep an eye on him to see what he might do next."

Reid asked, "Keeping tabs on the deceased's partner? What's the issue with him? How did you find out?"

Luke used microexpression analysis and instantly sensed the other person was hiding something, while Jackson relied on his experience as a patrol officer.

Luke gave Jackson a glance, signaling him to elaborate.

Jackson said, "Chief, I've spent some time as a patrol officer and I'm familiar with the department's workings. The relationship between patrol partners is very close, it's almost like entrusting their lives to each other, even closer than spouses.

Last night, the deceased and his partner pursued a suspect vehicle. They patrol the streets all day long, with their sources and colleagues supporting them.

If they say they have no leads on the suspects in the red Honda car, I wouldn't believe it for a second.

Later on, the captain and I reviewed their body camera footage, and the deceased's camera captured the face of a female suspect, which confirmed my suspicions even further.

I think the deceased's partner, Timo Jensen, has certain leads. If he's not telling us, it's either because he's guilty of something.

Or he's planning to investigate on his own to catch those two suspects and avenge his partner."

"Not bad, the analysis makes some sense." Reid nodded, then looked towards Vincent on the other side, "Deputy, did you find anything on your end?"

"We apprehended an idiot who was messing with the barricade and the crime scene. Additionally, I found several cigarette butts in the alley at the crime scene and suspect someone lingered there for a while." The deputy walked over to the projector and put up a map, "This is the crime scene, the location of the suspect vehicle, and the deceased.

The alley where the cigarette butts were found is less than thirty meters from the scene. If I were the killer planning to ambush officers, I would very likely hide in that alley."

Reid frowned and questioned, "You think this was a premeditated murder!"

The deputy rubbed his chin, "I'm not sure, but killing a police officer isn't a trivial matter. Ordinarily, one would think it over thoroughly before pulling the trigger."

Reid said, "If your analysis is correct and the killer premeditated the murder of the officer, then the driver and passenger of the red Honda might be accomplices who deliberately lured the officer to the killer's ambush site."

Luke chimed in, "Assuming the deputy's guess is correct, killing an officer isn't a trivial matter. Why would they do it?"

Luke wrote the deceased's name on the whiteboard and said to Matthew nearby, "Check the deceased's complete records in the system to see if we missed any information."

"Yes, sir."

Luke instructed, "Jackson, play the body camera footage from the deceased and his partner, Timo Jensen, to let everyone see the situation at the time and the female suspect's appearance."

Jackson stood up and first played the footage from Timo Jensen's body camera. The footage began inside the police car, chasing the red Honda. Shortly after, the red Honda came to a stop, and a man jumped out of the driver's seat and ran off.

The police car stopped, Timo Jensen exited, and chased in the direction of the driver.

The driver was young, probably in his twenties, running fast, and familiar with the terrain, making it hard for Timo Jensen to keep up.

They ran across the street into a street without streetlights. Timo Jensen took out his flashlight and continued the pursuit, turning a corner and running some distance.

"Bang!"

A gunshot rang out.

Timo Jensen stopped and called for backup, then returned to the location of the police car and the suspect vehicle.

Upon return, the deceased was found lying not far from the red Honda, bleeding profusely from a wound in his back.

The footage from the body camera matched Timo Jensen's account closely. He hadn't lied in this regard.

Then, the first squad reviewed the deceased's body camera footage.

After Timo Jensen got out of the car, the deceased also exited and approached the red Honda to search. Inside the car, he encountered a Mexican woman, and the body camera captured her face.

Afterward, the deceased asked the Mexican woman to exit the car, lay on the car, and handcuffed her.

"Bang bang bang bang!"

After four shots, the deceased fell to the ground, and the body camera screen went black.

Because he was shot in the back, the body camera couldn't capture the killer's details.

After watching both videos, Reid said, "Although we can't yet determine if the two suspects in the red Honda are connected to the killer, from the content of the two body camera videos, we can definitely rule out that they personally fired the shot.
