Chapter 335: Convince with Reasoning
Cruise Manor.
Early in the morning, Luke was woken by the noisy sounds around the manor.
Today was the day of Fuan Cruise and Chanel Karl's engagement, and unless something unexpected happened, it was also Luke's last day at the manor.
As long as he ensured that the engagement ceremony went smoothly, the $200,000 commission would be in his pocket.
After getting up and washing up, Luke inspected the manor. There were quite a few new faces all preparing for the engagement ceremony—preparing food, setting up the scene, makeup artists, etc.
Luke made a round and didn't notice anything unusual, so he headed to the restaurant to eat. He happened to see the troublemaker Manny also dining.
Luke ordered breakfast from a servant next to him, poured a cup of coffee from the pot, and greeted, "Hey, buddy, good morning."
Manny grimaced, "I don't want to talk to you."
Luke laughed, "You look like a disgruntled little girl."
"With so many people eating dinner last night, I washed all the dishes; I feel like my hands are about to peel off, all because of you."
"Sorry, guess I delayed your 'flying plans'."
"You're really an asshole."
"Bad guys always say that about me."
"If I'm a bad guy, what are you?"
"I'm the bad guy who bullies bad guys, a negative times a negative equals a positive, so I'm a good guy.
Just like Captain America.
You can call me Captain Los Angeles."
"No, you're no captain. Captains don't bully minors."
"So he died, and I'm still alive."
"The captain didn't die, he just stayed in the past, with the one he loved. It's a very romantic end, the director was quite imaginative."
"I don't care whether he died or went back to the past.
Nor do I care if it's a minor or a woman. Anyone who dare kicks me into the lake better be prepared to get a beating."
Manny laughed, "Have you ever hit a woman?"
"Not yet, because women like me, they would rather join me in a hot tub than kick me into a lake."
Manny "…"
"I'm here to have breakfast, not to listen to your bragging."
"I'm not bragging. I'm handsome, rich, famous, and imposing; lots of women like me."
"So, your personal life must be messy."
"I'm not that kind of person; I focus most of my energy on work, I'm busy."
"Have you always been a detective?"
"I'm actually a cop by profession."
"With a cop's paycheck, it must be hard to become a rich man."
"No matter what profession, as long as you're the best, making money is just a by-product."
"Will we see each other again?"
"No, once your grandfather's engagement ceremony is over, I will leave the manor.
In the future, you'd better not run into me either."
"Why? Are you going to beat me up?"
"Beating you is trivial. I usually handle major criminal cases. In simple terms, I deal with dead people."
"Have you ever killed anyone?"
Luke laughed, "Which day are you asking about?"
"OK, pretend I never asked."
After some 'friendly' interaction, the relationship between the two eased quite a bit.
Even Luke felt that the kid was beginning to look up to him a bit.
Rightfully so, being handsome, imposing, and capable of fighting are exactly the qualities young people admire, aren't they?
...
All morning, Cruise Manor was bustling.
The engagement ceremony was held at 10:30 AM and ended at 1:30 PM.
By 9:00 AM, guests were arriving at the manor steadily.
Fuan Cruise and Chanel Karl were welcoming guests at the entrance of the manor.
Luke also secretly observed their demeanor, noticing that their relationship was growing increasingly intimate.
It seems that they must have had a good talk last night.
After all, it was their private affair, and Luke had no intention of prying further.
However, Luke also had his own speculation about the reason Chanel Karl kept secrets.
The first possibility was that the clues Luke and Orty found were just a coincidence, and Galcan was not Chanel Karl's child.
Though a small chance, it wasn't impossible.
The second possibility, Galcan was indeed Chanel Karl's child, but for some reason, Chanel Karl had to keep it hidden.
Luke guessed that it might have something to do with the profession Chanel Karl was in. She used to be an actress, perhaps for the sake of her future and career, she had to hide the truth about having a child out of wedlock.
It might sound ridiculous now, but this happened over thirty years ago when Hollywood wasn't as open as it is now.
In fact, even today's Hollywood isn't as open as one might think.
Take coming out, for example. Hollywood appears very inclusive, almost as if it isn't an issue and might even add a buff.
But behind the scenes, the impact is still significant.
As for why Chanel Karl didn't tell Fuan Cruise about Galcan, firstly, Chanel Karl wasn't short of money, although her assets weren't as substantial as Fuan's, she was still quite wealthy.
The second reason might be from Fuan Cruise's children.
In the absence of any children from Chanel Karl, Fuan Cruise's children were against their marriage. If they knew Chanel Karl had a son, Fuan Cruise's children would definitely oppose it more.
If the child was also their father's own, their assets could be nearly halved. That would probably cause an uproar indeed.
