Chapter 647: The True Identity of the Enemy
"Fu-k You! You illegitimate bastard..."
The white man with a scar by his eye was being held hostage, slowly retreating from the thick smoke. Suddenly, he burst into a tirade of curses as the man with a hawk nose swiftly raised his handgun, smashing it down on his head.
On the other side, Reesi twitched at the sight and patted Chenier on the shoulder, speaking with a peculiar tone:
"This scene feels familiar, like I've seen it somewhere before."
"I feel the same way."
Chenier's mouth twitched as she took a deep breath and turned to Luo An. Luo An had an odd look on his face as well but quickly suppressed his emotions and asked:
"Could you two please start by telling us your names?"
"This illegitimate son of a bitch is Ian!"
The scarred man being held hostage cursed out loud and then revealed that the man with the hawk nose was called Phillips.
As for the relationship between the two, it was similar to that between Sarls and his black female subordinate earlier—Ian had always been Phillips's subordinate and worked for him.
"OK."
Luo An shifted the topic to Ian and asked:
"Mr. Ian, could you tell me why you are holding your boss hostage?"
"Gentlemen, I understand your objective."
Ian didn't beat around the bush and bluntly said:
"All the trouble today was stirred up by Phillips; he's your target too. I'm just an employee, and I don't want to die.
So let's make a deal. You let me go, and I'll hand Phillips over to you, how about that?"
His words sounded substantial and logical, and neither Chenier nor Reesi saw any problem with them. Luo An narrowed his eyes, ready to speak, but Phillips once again preempted him, cursing out loud:
"Shit! You, Ian, are not so clean!
You three, listen to me, you absolutely cannot agree to this guy..."
Bang!
Before Phillips could finish his sentence, Luo An violently stomped on the ground, moving swiftly to the side of the group while raising his gun and shooting Ian's wrist.
The intense pain caused Ian to involuntarily release the gun and it fell. Reesi and Chenier reacted swiftly, immediately lunging forward to bring Phillips down and tightly pinned him to the ground.
"*#%..."
Uttering an unintelligible curse, Ian pulled out a black object from his pocket and threw it towards Luo An and the others, then turned and bolted without hesitation.
"Get down!"
Realizing the black object was a grenade, Luo An shouted loudly. Chenier and Reesi quickly sought cover, lying flat on the ground, while Luo An once again raised his submachine gun.
Boom——
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
The grenade hit the ground and exploded with a blast, throwing dust over Chenier, Reesi, and Luo An, and another pit appeared on the ground.
At the same time, four gunshots rang out, and Luo An's bullets accurately struck Ian's knees, causing Ian to collapse forward, sprawling on the ground.
"No need to leave in such a hurry, Mr. Ian."
Walking slowly to Ian's side, Luo An ripped a piece of cloth from his clothing and tied up his hands. Looking at Ian, who was gritting his teeth in anger, Luo An smiled broadly:
"I have many unanswered questions, and maybe you could be of some help."
————
Half an hour later, Luo An and his group, guarding Ian and Phillips, found an open area. Chenier and Reesi kept an eye on Ian, while Luo An pulled Phillips aside under a nearby large tree.
Luo An took out two packets of chocolate from his bulletproof vest pocket, ate one packet himself, and tossed the other to Phillips, who was sitting on the ground with his hands bound and his lips chapped.
While regaining his strength by eating the chocolate, Luo An briefly described how Sarls and his black female subordinate had been blown to bits, concluding with:
"We've just checked that pit; it contained some charred human tissue but no complete skeletons.
So, as the person who ambushed Sarls, Mr. Phillips, you must know something, right?"
Being the one who received advance notice and had the opportunity and capability to ambush Sarls made Phillips a significant source of clues, which is why Luo An made a point to seek him out.
After finishing the chocolate, Phillips took a long breath and asked:
"Who exactly are you people?"
"CIA."
Luo An casually replied.
"Now can you answer my question?"
Hearing the word CIA, Phillips's pupils contracted. After pondering for a few seconds, he gritted his teeth and said:
"In fact, my real identity is one of Sarls's subordinates!
The ambush today was also orchestrated by Sarls who contacted me and ordered me to do so!"
Phillips indicated that he was one of the earliest followers of Sarls and became her subordinate when Sarls first entered the underground arms market.
Then, one day out of the blue, Sarls approached Phillips privately, saying she would give Phillips a sum of money, and then asked Phillips to betray her and become her sworn enemy.
Phillips sneered and said:
"On the surface, we're enemies, but in reality, Sarls has always been remotely commanding me to reach out to those who truly hate her and have a vendetta against her.
Through the information I provided, Sarls was able to take control of everything and completely eliminate those enemies!"
Luo An's eyebrows raised after confirming through "emotional perception" that Phillips was telling the truth. He didn't expect Sarls to go through so much trouble just to set a trap.
Upon further thought, Luo An suddenly realized another matter and asked:
"But you are very dissatisfied with this arrangement, aren't you?"
"Correct."
Phillips hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded.
As time went by, through various acts of betrayal, Phillips began to accumulate more and more funds, and his influence gradually increased, naturally giving rise to thoughts of rebellion.
However, Phillips never showed his intentions, knowing that among his subordinates, there were definitely those sent by Sarls to keep an eye on him.
For the sake of security, Phillips carefully observed for a long time, and finally placed Ian, whose identity and records appeared to be very clean, by his side.
"But I never expected that Ian would also be one of 'those' people!"
Recalling the recent scene of Ian holding him hostage, Phillips's face twisted as he cursed vehemently:
"That damn Sarls is everywhere; she's really formidable!"
Luo An remained calm and continued to inquire:
"What exactly was the ambush plan?"
"It was simply an ambush."
Phillips indicated that the plan was not complex; he hired a bunch of mercenaries and set up an ambush in advance according to the route provided by Sarls.
The command given by Sarls to Phillips was "to try to kill her for real."
Phillips saw this as a good opportunity and immediately decided to act it out for real, hiring an even larger group of mercenaries.
But Phillips could never have anticipated the subsequent developments of the event, not only the sudden appearance of strangers like Luo An, but these strangers also brought a bunch of cannon fodder wielding AKs.
The sudden appearance of a large group of men with AKs did indeed catch the mercenaries off guard, otherwise they wouldn't have ended up with only a dozen men left.
After Phillips finished his story, Luo An furrowed his brows and asked:
"That black female subordinate, you don't know who she is?"
Phillips shook his head repeatedly:
"I've never even heard of this person!"
After interrogating Phillips, Luo An proceeded to interrogate Ian, but Ian remained silent, not answering any questions.
Chenier and Reesi, after hearing what had happened, looked at each other with somewhat grave expressions. Chenier pondered for a few seconds and speculated:
"Since we are from the FBI, first we disguise ourselves as the CIA to capture Leonardo, and then pretend to be Leonardo's men to meet with Sarls.
Could there be a possibility that the black female subordinate is actually an MI6 agent in real identity? And that her subordinate role is also a disguise?"
"It's possible!"
Reesi's eyes lit up as she nodded firmly:
"That Lynx helicopter is clear proof of Sarls's connection with the Kingdom of England!"
Immediately after, Reesi's expression fell, and she said helplessly:
"There are signs of human flesh being burned in the pit, but no skeletons; we could suspect that Sarls and the black woman faked their deaths.
But the problem is, we can't find them now."
Chenier also sighed, then turned to find Luo An looking composed. Her eyes brightened as she asked:
"Luo An, do you have any good ideas?"
Luo An chuckled. Before he could answer, the comm devices of the three suddenly buzzed with Winslow's somewhat excited shout:
"Team leader, a signal has been detected!"
