Chapter 31: Plans Can’t Keep Up With Changes

The Return to Base skill was arguably one of the system's god-tier gifts to Allen. After unlocking the equipment system, he successfully gained three skills, Return to Base, Healing, and Phantom Dash.

Earlier, deep in the Forbidden Forest, he kept a Phantom Dash ready, just in case Hagrid suddenly showed up. You have to understand, this gamekeeper treats the entire Forbidden Forest like his backyard. If he discovered that his beloved pets had been slaughtered by Allen, patience wouldn't be something he'd have in abundance.

Luckily, today wasn't so unlucky. Allen didn't have to use the skill, avoiding a heap of trouble, seeing with his own eyes and hearing spiders talk were two very different things when it came to capturing people.

As for where Return to Base brought him, well, that was a little awkward. He appeared right inside his own bed covers.

More precisely, fully clothed with his robe and shoes on, he simply popped up in the warmth of his blanket.

That was unavoidable. He only had two selectable return points, his orphanage nest, and his Hogwarts dorm bed. The first was unusable; the illusory room there was crossed out in red, accompanied by a little note: "No healing allowed."

So, the bed became his healing pool. Because, after all, sleep really is the best recovery method.

System, did you see this beer bottle here?

Did you eat the infirmary?

Nope. The system stayed as cold and indifferent as ever.

But that was fine, what came next was a moment to witness a miracle. After all this effort, he was now able to handle the next hero's abilities.

So, now that we have the money, let's buy that 6300 upgrade!

Wait!

Something felt wrong.

Allen suddenly realized something, venom was great, but it definitely couldn't be used as Galleons directly.

With his limited magical world knowledge, venom had to be secretly sold in Diagon Alley. If he tried selling it openly in Hogsmeade, Hagrid would catch wind of it soon enough. Never underestimate Hogwarts' influence over Hogsmeade; if Allen sold venom there, the shopkeepers would hand him over in a heartbeat.

Meaning: he wouldn't be able to sell these goods until Christmas break.

What a joke!

Considering the environment venom was harvested in, even with all his skills, Allen had no way to preserve it fresh until Christmas.

That meant another adventure was inevitable.

Damn it, he'd gotten too cocky after unlocking those skills and forgotten the most important part of the plan: the sales.

A totally unnecessary risk, but still necessary. He probably wouldn't be able to get a pile of Galleons any other way this year, and he wasn't about to let this liquid gold rot away.

The problem? Weekend detention meant he didn't even have the time to prepare.

Even if he burned huge amounts of magic to use a teleportation shortcut, his current skill could only transport him about a kilometer, and that wasn't enough to get from the Forbidden Forest back to the common room.

But as the saying goes: where there's a will, there's a way.

Finally, Allen came up with a solution, Floo Powder.

Hogwarts' fireplaces could use Floo Powder, and importantly, they weren't monitored by any network. Thanks to Dumbledore's influence, that was a privilege no one could challenge.

With the biggest obstacle solved, everything else was easy.

Though buying Floo Powder only required simple registration, Allen wasn't about to spend even a single Galleon on it.

Being a known deadbeat, Filch obviously couldn't use apparition to leave, especially since that was banned at Hogwarts anyway.

But as caretaker, Filch had to stockpile plenty of supplies, meaning he regularly went out, and therefore always kept a box of Floo Powder for trips.

And tomorrow, Allen's job was to help Filch organize the results of years of his hard work, mostly a mountain of contraband.

That meant plenty of chances to sneak some Floo Powder. Filch probably wouldn't mind.

The rest? That was up to Valor, the good comrade who worked clean and efficiently, and could be trusted.

The next morning, Hogwarts was bright and sunny as usual. Though Hagrid's mood was likely far less cheerful.

But after Aragog's death, he'd soon realize just how unreliable those spiders really were. And Allen figured his preemptive strike was a kind of insurance against them aiding Voldemort.

Starting from breakfast, many students were already buzzing with excitement, their two-day break officially starting now. Others? Probably still healing under their blankets.

Not Allen though. After greeting a few classmates, it was time for work, that's what detention in the first week meant.

Fortunately, Filch wasn't too harsh with him, thanks in part to Mrs. Norris.

Lonely Filch's only companion was the cat, and Filch never showed a cold face to those his feline friend liked.

Why did Mrs. Norris like Allen?

Heh, no cat can resist a fish treat, or two.

The Hufflepuff kitchen was probably the biggest Hogwarts expense, both by number of people and per capita spending. The house elves happily provided everything they could to every visitor.

At the registration desk, Allen found the work far more interesting than he expected.

After expressing interest in Filch's tales, Filch gave him an automatic recording quill, Allen's job became making sure the clumsy pen didn't wander off the page.

Though he felt a little guilty, Allen was mainly fascinated because Filch's stories were basically Hogwarts' "how-to" on rule-breaking and prank items.

If it weren't for natural conflict, the twins might have worshiped Filch the most, proudly declaring, "After all these years at Hogwarts, what prank haven't I seen?"

Just as Filch was getting fired up, a small model on his desk suddenly lit up, prompting Filch to erupt in anger.

"Damn it! Someone's playing a prank!" Filch stopped his speech and stormed out.

Allen quickly spotted a box of Floo Powder by the fireplace.

"Congratulations, new item obtained!"

And as for Mrs. Norris? Under her paw lay a new fish tr
