Tomo POV

The buzz of her phone startled Tomo. She'd been re-watching the first episode of Parasyte, a grin plastered on her face, ready to dissect it with Bob later. It was a Tuesday night ritual, their escape from the drudgery of school and the relentless pressure of exams. She glanced at the notification. It wasn't a message from Bob.

It was a news alert. Something about a bus accident on Route 4. Her stomach clenched. Route 4 was Bob's route.

She tapped the notification, her thumb hovering over the link. A grainy image filled the screen: twisted metal, flashing lights, rain blurring everything into an indistinguishable mess. She scrolled through the brief article, her eyes scanning for details. The accident had happened around rush hour. Multiple casualties.

A cold dread settled in her bones. She tried calling Bob. It went straight to voicemail. She tried again. And again. Each time, the automated voice was a hammer blow to her hope.

She frantically texted Bob: Dude, you okay? Saw the news about the bus… Call me.

Minutes stretched into an eternity. She paced her room, the Parasyte episode forgotten, the cheerful opening theme now a cruel mockery. She kept refreshing the news article, hoping for an update, any update. But there was nothing new, just the same grim details and the haunting image of the wreckage.

Then, her phone rang. Its Bob!. She hesitated, then answered.

The voice on the other end was hesitant, formal. It was a police officer. Tomomi's heart pounded in her chest, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs. The officer asked her to confirm her name, her relationship to Bob Kimura.

Tomomi's voice caught in her throat. "He's…he's my best friend."

The officer's voice softened, but the words that followed shattered Tomomi's world. There had been fatalities in the accident. Bob…Bob was one of them.

The phone slipped from Tomomi's numb fingers, clattering to the floor. She stared at the blank screen, her mind refusing to process the words she'd just heard. Bob was gone. Just like that. Gone.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were watching this scene unfold from outside her own body. She should be feeling something, shouldn't she? Grief, sadness, anger… But there was only a hollow emptiness, a vast, echoing silence where her friend's laughter and endless enthusiasm used to be.

She sank to the floor, her legs giving way beneath her. The image of the bus wreckage flashed through her mind, and a wave of nausea washed over her. She imagined Bob, trapped, hurt… The thought was unbearable.

She finally registered the silence in her room. It was deafening. There was no Bob to dissect the anime with, no Bob to argue about which cosplay was better, no Bob to share the absurdities of their world with.

She picked up her phone, her fingers trembling as she opened their message thread. She scrolled through their conversations, a flood of memories washing over her. Bob's goofy jokes, his infectious excitement for anything anime-related, his quiet kindness… It was all there, preserved in digital form, a ghost of a life that was now gone.

She stopped at Bob's last message: 'Sweet! Just gotta survive this math class first. Sensei's been on a rampage lately'.

Tears finally welled in her eyes, hot and stinging. She clutched her phone to her chest, a sob escaping her lips. She wanted to scream, to rage against the unfairness of it all. But all she could do was whisper, her voice choked with grief, "Why, Bob? Why?"

She looked at the TV screen, the paused image of Parasyte staring back at her. Tomo was left alone, with a hole in her heart that would never be filled.
