Journey to Godhood Begins in Frieren

Chapter 236: Happiness

Girls' friendships always start suddenly. Even though Yami was rather aloof, after spending a week together, Yui Kotegawa still became her friend.

It was all thanks to Lala acting as a bridge between them.

That week, Yami practically lived in the library, learning about this planet's culture through all kinds of books.

Shichen wasn't sure how she now felt about Earth, but she seemed to be turning into a bookworm.

Yami was completely enamored with reading: at home or outside she always had a book in hand, even while eating or before bed. Occasionally she picked up volumes that even impressed Shichen.

Knowledge really can be addictive.

On Monday, Shichen sat in his office, chin in hand and a serious look on his face. He was waiting for someone.

Soon, there was a knock.

Knock, knock, knock—

"Come in."

The door opened and a beautiful, androgynous boy walked in.

His hair was strikingly split front‑to‑back into black and white, with two prominent "ahoge" sticking up.

"So you're Shichen?" the boy asked, staring him down.

"And you're Ren Elsie Jewelria?" Shichen replied calmly.

He remembered him; though he had no idea what planet this alien came from, Ren's uniqueness left an impression. He also recalled that Lala had treated him like a doll when they were small.

…Why does that thought irritate me?

"It's me—and I'm here to take her back!" Ren declared loudly.

"You?" Shichen chuckled.

"Got a problem?" Ren retorted.

"Kid, stop fooling around—she's mine."

"Hmph! I don't accept that!"

"Whether you accept it is your business. She's already my girl." Shichen smirked.

"Your girl?" Ren frowned.

"Seems you know nothing. We sleep together every day. What do you think that means?"

"W‑What?!" Ren's eyes widened, his face burning red.

"N‑No way—"

"Told you you're just a kid." Shichen shook his head with a contemptuous smile.

"You… how could you…" Ren suddenly collapsed to his knees.

"Lala's my girlfriend—my fiancée. We're in love. Why not?"

"How… can this be…" Ren slumped as though the sky had fallen.

"Heh. Still want to transfer schools?"

"I—"

"Go ahead and transfer; my school could use a few more aliens."

"What do you mean?" Ren looked up in confusion.

"Exactly what it sounds like."

Shichen stood, squatted before Ren, lifted his chin.

A fine face indeed—still youthful, but deadly to a class of teenage girls. That could be trouble.

"What are you doing?" Ren asked.

"What planet are you from again?" Shichen said.

"Memorze."

"Hmm? Not important."

"Then why ask?"

"So you can be prepared."

"Prepared for what?"

"For this…"

Shichen snapped his fingers in front of Ren's nose—an itch‑inducing spell he got from Serie, a veritable encyclopedia of magic, even the most pointless kinds.

"Ah… ACHOO—!"

Ren sneezed; white mist burst from his body, obscuring him.

Shichen stepped back and watched.

When the mist cleared, Ren was gone.

"Huh?" came a surprised girl's voice. "What… happened?"

Kneeling where Ren had been was a stunning girl with long green‑blue hair, the same twin ahoge, and deep‑pink eyes.

"Hello," Shichen greeted.

"You… why am I…?" she asked, puzzled. She wasn't unfamiliar with Shichen—she shared vision with Ren, after all.

"What's your name?"

"Eh? I‑I'm Run Elsie Jewelria."

"Then I'll call you Run," Shichen said.

"Fine, but you still haven't answered me!"

"Simple. You just sneezed."

"What does that mean?" Run tilted her head.

"On this planet you're influenced naturally. Memorze swap gender whenever they sneeze."

Ren belonged to the royal line of Memorze, able to switch body and personality—a detail Shichen remembered well.

"Really?!" Run gaped.

"All right, I'll take you to class. You're staying, right?"

"I'm staying!" Run said excitedly.

"Good. Put on this uniform." Shichen handed her a girls' uniform he'd prepared.

"Okay." Run began undressing right in front of him.

Shichen didn't turn away—she was the one changing openly. He had to admit the view suited his tastes, though her dual‑gender nature gave him pause.

Once dressed, he led her to class.

"Shichen, what brings you here?" Lala lit up at the sight of him, nearly leaping from her seat until Yui Kotegawa held her back.

"A transfer student for your class," Shichen explained.

"A transfer student?"

"Run, come in."

As Run entered, the boys instantly buzzed.

"C‑Cute!"

"Huh? Run?" Lala gasped.

"Lala, long time no see!" Run waved happily.

"Run, why are you here?"

"I came to play with you!"

"Is that so?"

"Enough chatting for now." Shichen interrupted. "This is RUn Elsie Jewelria, a Memorze."

"P‑Principal, does that mean Run is… an alien?" a student realized.

"Congratulations, you guessed right."

"For real?"

"Let me show you."

Shichen snapped his fingers before Run.

"Achoo~"

With the sneeze, smoke burst out; when it cleared, Ren appeared again.

"She turned into a boy!"

"So cool!"

"Ah, it's Ren," Lala said.

"Shichen, you jerk!" Ren Runged—still in the girls' uniform—but Shichen easily warded him off and pinched the back of his neck; Ren froze.

"Now do you believe me?" Shichen asked the class.

"Uh‑huh…" they nodded numbly.

"Then all good."

Shichen released Ren, snapped his fingers again, turning him back into Run.

"Run, sit over there."

"Okay~" Run cheerfully walked to Lala.

Eyes followed her; it was hard to process someone truly androgynous, but they'd accept it after a class or two.

"Lala, come with me," Shichen beckoned.

"Huh? What is it?"

"You'll see."

"Oh—"

"Everyone, carry on." Shichen led Lala away.

Back in the office, he locked the door, lifted her onto the chair behind his desk.

"Shichen, what's wrong?" Lala looped her arms around his neck.

"Ren just challenged me," Shichen said evenly.

"Challenged?"

"Said he'd steal you from me."

"Really? Ignore him—I like you." Lala hugged tighter, smiling.

"Is that so? But I'm jealous." He gripped her slender waist.

"Jealous?" Lala blinked.

"Ren said he used to play with you a lot."

"Wasn't that Run?" she tilted her head.

"Anyway, I told him you're already my woman."

"Wasn't I always your woman?"

"Not the same." Shichen pecked her lips. "Do you know what being a woman means?"

"Hmm?" Lala looked puzzled.

"Let me show you."

Shichen stood, carried her in a princess hold, and walked to the darkroom.

The darkroom had been prepared long ago—games, manga, novels, and a big bed.

He tossed her onto the bed, and she bounced twice.

"Shichen, what are you doing?" Lala still hadn't caught on.

"Of course... I'm going to eat you up." Shichen pounced and pinned her, eyes blazing.

Lala's heart raced. Now she understood: "R-Really? Here?"

"Can't help it—I'm crazy jealous." Shichen started removing her uniform.

"Mmm..." Lala became shy and stopped moving.

"Scared?" Shichen asked gently.

"No... Actually, I'm kind of looking forward to it..." Lala blinked with red cheeks.

"Then don't cry later~"

"What do you mean?"

"You'll find out."

Soon, the only sounds in the room were clothes hitting the floor—and then, melodious singing.

No one knew how much time passed. Then a cry of pain signaled Lala's coming of age.

After that, only beautiful singing remained in the room.

Occasionally, it was accompanied by chimes—just the school bells outside ringing for class.

Unfortunately, only Shichen could enjoy this harmony of song and chimes.

The students outside continued their usual routines, switching between joy and pain with each bell.

But not Shichen. He could listen to beautiful music the entire time.

The principal's happiness was something they could never understand.

The blend of song and bell—only he could enjoy it.
