Journey to Godhood Begins in Frieren

Chapter 235: Mikado Ryouko

All morning, Shichen stayed in his office—but not because he was buried in work.

There was nothing important going on this week, so the principal's help simply wasn't needed. Bored, he just sat there day‑dreaming.

He had wondered whether Yami, still unfamiliar with this planet, might drop by to keep him company, but she never came; even Kotegawa Yui failed to show up.

Yui must already know about Yami—so isn't she curious? Didn't she feel like dragging Yami over to ask questions?

Or did Lala already explain everything for him?

Just before the bell ending the last morning class, Shichen left the office and stopped outside the classroom.

Through the window he could see everything clearly. Everyone was listening to the lesson attentively—yes, even those two.

His eyes lingered on a bluish‑purple‑haired girl and a brown‑haired boy; the air between them felt a little odd. From time to time the two stole glances at each other, then—too shy—snapped their heads away.

How adorably innocent.

"Ah! Shichen, what are you doing here?" Lala's delighted cry pierced the air as soon as she noticed him.

The rest of the class followed her gaze.

"Good morning, Principal!"

"Carry on—don't let me interrupt," Shichen waved, already turning away.

"Shichen, where are you going? Aren't we eating together later?" Lala called after him.

"What's the hurry? Class isn't over yet."

"Fine, then where should Yui and I meet you later?"

"Wa‑wait, La‑Lala!" Kotegawa Yui blurted, suddenly flustered. Because of Lala's slip, the whole class stared at her.

"Huh? Even the Disciplinary Committee girl has something going on with the principal?"

"But she's super strait‑laced, right? Maybe she's just keeping him company?"

"Yeah, maybe so…"

Yui bowed her head in embarrassment.

Chuckling, Shichen glanced at her and said, "I'll come find both of you when the bell rings."

"Okay~"

He nodded an apology to the teacher and left.

Passing the school infirmary, a thought popped into Shichen's head. He stopped, pushed the door open—and found no trace of disinfectant, no patients on the beds, and no nurse in sight. Empty.

Must have stepped out for lunch, he guessed, and turned to leave.

Just then a mature, elegant woman appeared, strolling toward him with a cup of coffee. Tall, with short chestnut‑brown hair and striking features, she wore a white lab coat over a pink, lace‑trimmed V‑neck top that showed a generous hint of cleavage.

Shichen raised an eyebrow—not at the ample curves (he actually preferred petite frames), but because he sensed Divine Fragments on her body.

So this is my first time actually meeting her; she even skipped the all‑school assembly when I was appointed principal.

"Well now, aren't you the new principal? What brings you here?" the woman asked with mild surprise.

"Dr Mikado," Shichen greeted with a faint smile. "Just passing by, that's all."

"Oh? Checking whether any students are sick? How considerate," Mikado Ryōko teased warmly.

"You give me too much credit. With you here, I never worry about the students' health."

Shichen remembered that Mikado Ryōko was a legendary underground doctor famed across the galaxy; as long as the patient was still breathing, she could save them. Even with his own healing magic, he had to admire that skill.

"The principal knows who I am?" Mikado blinked.

"Mm. I've heard plenty—everyone speaks highly of you."

"I see…"

R‑r‑ring! The bell announcing the lunch break sounded.

"In that case, Dr Mikado, I won't keep you."

"Of course."

They exchanged a brief wave, and Shichen headed off.

Mikado stood where she was, watching his back until he disappeared around the corner. Only then did she smile meaningfully and step into the infirmary.

When Shichen reached Lala's classroom, Lala and Yui were waiting at the door.

"Sorry to keep you waiting."

"Shichen~ I'm starving!" Lala ran up and hugged his arm.

"Then let's hurry home." He fondly rubbed her head.

"Mm‑hm!"

"Yui, shall we?"

"Uh‑huh…" Yui pursed her lips and followed.

"What's wrong?" he asked, puzzled.

"It's your fault everyone's misunderstood me!" Yui pouted.

"What do you mean?"

"Now the whole class thinks there's something fishy between us. What am I supposed to do?" She puffed out her cheeks.

"Oh, that. Hardly worth getting upset—Lala didn't do it on purpose."

"But now everyone's looking at me funny."

"That's odd—people already know about me and Lala. Why the misunderstanding?"

"People believe what they want," Yui sighed.

"True. Then just ignore them."

"H‑huh?"

"It's bound to happen sooner or later," Shichen said with a soft smile.

"Bound to—what do you mean?!" Yui's face went crimson. She glanced at Lala, who was smiling innocently—yet somehow the smile felt deeper.

Finding a quiet corner, Shichen took Yui's hand; in an instant he ferried all three of them back home.

"Take a break, you two. I'll cook."

"Okay~" Lala flopped onto the sofa.

"Want me to help?" Yui asked.

"Sure—wash the vegetables for me."

"I'll help too," Lala chimed in.

"No, you go fetch Yami."

"Oh, right—where'd she go?"

"Probably the library."

"Got it! Peke, outfit change!"

"Yes, Lala-sama!"

Lala changed into her white alien suit and flew off, while Shichen and Yui headed to the kitchen.

"Yui, wash those greens, please."

"Alright."

Side by side at the sink, they worked in silence for a while before Yui spoke again.

"That girl Yami… she's an alien too, isn't she?"

"Knew you had questions." Shichen grinned. "Yes, she is."

"And she's… cute, right?"

"Jealous?"

"N‑no!" Yui denied, head down.

Noticing the tips of her ears redden, Shichen chuckled. "Relax—you're cute too."

"Who asked you?!" Yui blushed even harder.

"Okay, okay." Shichen laughed quietly, and Yui, cheeks burning, said nothing more.

Only the running water broke the silence… until Lala returned with Yami.

"Shichen, we're back!"

"Send Yami in."

Yami stepped into the kitchen, face blank. "What is it?"

"Lift up your skirt," Shichen said suddenly.

"W‑what are you up to?!" Yami panicked.

"Just checking whether you're wearing safety shorts."

"I am!"

"I won't believe it unless I see."

"You—!" Yami glared at him, cheeks aflame.

"What's to fear? They're only safety shorts—unless you aren't wearing any?"

"I am!"

Unable to resist the provocation, Yami grabbed her hem and flipped it up. Pale thighs flashed, followed by white safety shorts that, on her petite frame, looked almost like hot‑pants.

"Happy now?!" She yanked the skirt down.

"Yep, all good." Shichen nodded, satisfied. "Go introduce yourself to Yui."

"That girl … is she one of your targets too?" Yami asked, eyes narrowing.

"No idea what you're talking about," Shichen said, feigning ignorance.

Yami stared at him for a moment, then left the kitchen.

Seconds later, he heard greetings from the living room.

"H‑hello, I'm Kotegawa Yui."

"Hello, I'm… Yami."

"Yami… just call me Yui."

"Mm."

"Haha—don't mind her, Yui," Lala laughed. "That's just how Yami is; she's been on her own for a long time."

"Is that so? I understand."

"Shichen's cooking will take a while. Let's play some games and get to know each other!"

"Lala, I—"

"Come on, Yami! Yui, let's go!"

"Ah—o‑okay."
