Chapter 4: Using skills
-Thump! Thump! Thump!
The creatures were chasing after her, their eyes still glowing in the dark of the forest.
It seemed like they were after something, not someone, but as if they were chasing towards something else.
She was an obstacle in their path, and even though she wasn't the end goal, these XXL furries weren't going to leave a helpless target alone just like that.
'Damn it! How the hell am I going to survive like this?!'
Aria ran with all the strength she had in her body.
Her heart was racing once again. She was feeling the same instincts that she had felt back when that truck was about to hit her.
As she ran with all her might, she passively ignored everything that was crashing into her feet.
Her bare feet were bleeding already, but she did not care about any of that. She did not even think about any of them as she ran for her life.
'I ran like my life depended on it— because, spoiler alert, it did!'
-Thump! Thump! Thump!
"Awooooooooooo!"
The furries were chasing her, their size so big that the speed at which they were running seemed like a job from her perspective.
She knew for a fact that they were playing with her right now, as if she were a target they could snatch in just one leap.
'Fuck! Isn't there something I can use or somewhere I can hide?!'
Aria thought about what to do, but, as if being enlightened with the answers, she remembered she was now in a world that had 'skills' and stuff that seemed right out of some fictional book.
"That's right!"
Skills, there were a bunch of them listed in her status window aside from the Skill that the admins had given her.
One of them was bound to be helpful.
"There was this spike thing, right? How do I use that thing?!"
Of all the things in her status window, she could only remember the last thing she had seen, the blueprints that were listed at the very end of that blue screen.
[Ding!]
[You have used the Job skill: Creation.]
[Blueprint: Spike trap (Novice) has been created. One (CU) has been consumed.]
-Ooooooooooooong!
Her vision blurred for a moment, and she saw the spikes that were created out of the blue present right behind her.
These spikes were glowing. They seemed to be made out of wood, but from the looks of it, this was a deadly trap good enough to block or slow down a few of her pursuers.
'Good!'
The glowing spikes weren't fully materialised, even though their transparent form was visible like some hologram. They flickered for three seconds and moved along with Aria as she continued the run for her life.
Then…
-Zap!
As if some kind of timer was up, the spikes finished materialising, and, the very next moment, from the ground they were standing on, what seemed like wooden spikes carved out of the very trunk of a tree sprang out!
"Awwwww…!"
Three wolves at the forefront running right behind her fell to this trap, their bodies becoming skewers hanging on the thick spikes that had sprung out of the ground.
The impaled bodies twitched before going limp, blood dripping down like overfilled ketchup packets.
"What the fuck…?!"
Aria didn't expect that kind of firepower. When her eyes somehow showed her the flickering spikes behind her, they were only as big as her.
But when they finished materialising, they were big enough to barbecue the giant furries!
"Hell yeah!"
She didn't have any combat skills or ones that seemed to be combat skills, but if she used this trap well, she could deal with these monsters on her own!
This was her chance. There really was a way… or so she thought for a moment before realising something very important.
'Creation points are used for Creation!'
She had three of them at first, and now she has two. If she used the trap once again, she would have only one of them left.
"Awoooooooooo…!"
Not that she was going to be able to use those skills.
-Thump! Thump! Thump!
-Swiiiiish!
The death of their members had wounded the pack's pride.
The one who led the pack, the wolf with a big scar on his left eye and red eyes, seemed furious at the death of his partners.
He increased his speed and charged forward without holding back, jumping right in front of Aria with its big fangs pointed at her.
"I didn't want to off them, damn it! I was just protecting myself!"
Faced with death itself, Aria knew there was no way forward anymore.
With an entire pack of two dozen wolves behind her, there was no going back either.
"Gurrrrr!"
Showing its rage, the creature used its front paws to throw some soil at her.
-Shurrr…!
But, the force behind that rage moment was so great that the soil with some simple pebbles, which had only brushed past her skin, ripped open her skin and created wounds equivalent to having been attacked by a beast.
"Awooooooooo…!"
Seeing the weak creature bleed, the pack of wolves howled with glee. Their leader, the alpha, was not delighted.
Instead of mocking the weakness of the opponent, it glanced past her, at the skewered dead wolves, and scoffed as if it was cursing at them for dying at the hands of such a weak being.
"Argh! You bastard!"
Blood gushed out of her wounds so quickly that there was already a pool of blood all around her.
Not even half a minute had passed since the death of the three wolves, and even without the rest of them doing anything, she was already on the verge of death.
"Fuck…"
With the helplessness sinking in, Aria's mind was going blank. The loss of blood was anything but normal. She needed treatment; she needed a doctor.
"Heh, so… this… ahem! This… is how…I die? Finally…?"
The other world was fun while it lasted.
She hoped she had at least met a few otherworldly species while she was here.
But, well, what can we do now? She was dying, and there was nothing she could do with the body that didn't even have the strength to move a finger.
[Ding!]
[Skill: Assistance System has detected the critical condition of the owner.]
[Ding!]
[Skill: Assistance System suggests using the {Creation} skill to create Blueprint: Safe Zone (Novice).]
[Ding!]
[Do you want to create a Safe Zone (Novice)— Cost: 2CU?]
Her vision was blurring already. There was nothing to lose anymore when her life was slipping away.
With her weak, bloody hands, as the wolves surrounding her observed, she clicked the [Yes] on the blue screen floating before her.
…
But nothing really happened even after the screen disappeared.
"Gurrr…"
Some wolves discussed among themselves who was going to have this small snack. With their size, Aria was not good enough to be their meal.
She was but a weakling in their eyes. But the Alpha that had witnessed the death of three of their members knew the threat this weakling possessed.
"Awooooo!"
It warned everyone else to step away from her blood-covered body and approached it alone.
It was going to cover it completely with the sand and soil around them so that she wouldn't suddenly wake up and bite them like snakes.
"Gurrr…"
It approached her body and was about to carry out the final task when…
-Ooooooooooong!
Right before its paw could touch her body, a green light exploded from her.
The green light blocked the paw, even pushed it away a little, and surrounded the dead body, as well as a little of the surrounding area around it, covering everything in a green light— which soon turned into a translucent barrier.
[A safe zone has been established.]
[All harmful entities without permission will be blocked.]
[All entities within the safe zone will recover their energy, and fatal wounds will be healed gradually.]
She was saved.
But she wasn't conscious enough to know anything going on around her after that point…
She fell asleep.
And by the time she woke up, a strange scenario was playing out around her.
