Investigation Report of the Gods

Ch. 74

Chapter 74: My Mentor Sacrificed Himself

Everyone looked at the object he was holding up. It appeared to be something made of crystal, radiating a mesmerizing and eerie glow under the neon lights.

Someone recognized it in disbelief, “Crystal Skull?”

"Swish" "Swish" "Swish"

Countless guns immediately aimed at him, with tense shouts: “Quick, put it down, that thing will contaminate your spirit...”

“Putting it down, putting it down…”

Looking at the countless terrified faces, and the gun barrels pointed straight at him, so close he could even see some of the gunmen’s hands trembling, Han Su quickly raised the hand holding the suitcase.

When facing gun barrels, never try to act tough. One nervous twitch from the other side and it would all be over.

He spoke while slowly squatting down, placing the Crystal Skull on the ground, then took two steps back.

“All of you step back as well.”

Everyone’s attention was locked on the Crystal Skull on the ground. No one dared to make any unnecessary movement. But just then, a voice rose from the crowd. A woman in a red trench coat pushed through the people and stepped forward.

She appeared to be around thirty, with delicate makeup and striking beauty.

Han Su recognized her. In Miss Crow’s memories, he had seen her before—he knew she was the one who had taken in Miss Crow, long regarded as a bringer of misfortune, and raised her in secret. She had also been the one who gave Miss Crow a mission, sending her back from the wilderness to Qinggang.

The woman walked up to the Crystal Skull, gave Han Su a blank glance, then squatted down and removed her gloves, cautiously extending her hand.

All around, everyone held their breath.

Only when she gently touched the Crystal Skull, frowned slightly, and then firmly picked it up did the invisible pressure in the air suddenly lift.

“It has lost its contaminating properties!”

The woman in the red trench coat looked up at Han Su and asked, “This is a secondary mysterious item from the Crystal Skull. Where did you find it?”

“Over there!”

Han Su turned around and pointed to the cake shop’s door. “I originally came here with my mentor, Mr. Strange Bird, to carry out a task.”

“But after arriving here with Mr. Strange Bird, we unexpectedly saw Song Chu‑shi appear. And after a preliminary judgment, it seemed this dangerous individual’s target was directly related to the Crystal Plague mission our team was currently handling.”

“I followed Mr. Strange Bird through that door. Mr. Strange Bird went alone to face Song Chu‑shi, while I was entrusted with a crucial duty—to independently resolve that tricky B‑class task.”

“Of course, several other execution members provided significant help…”

His gaze swept around and soon landed on Miss Crow, Doctor, and Hei Hu behind an armed vehicle. He nodded and said, “It was them—they were a great help in stopping the Crystal Plague contamination.”

“You? Resolved the Crystal Plague on your own?”

The expression on the woman in the red trench coat was indescribably strange.

In truth, it wasn’t just this part that raised suspicion. The whole thing about Mr. Strange Bird confronting Song Chu‑shi alone—she didn’t buy it.

And it wasn’t just her. Even those standing in the shadows with briefcases in hand, who hadn’t stepped forward, all showed clearly astonished expressions.

Mr. Strange Bird, that bold? That he’d face Song Chu‑shi alone? More likely, he’d been mentally affected by some method of Song Chu‑shi’s.

The woman in the red trench coat gave Han Su a long, deep look, then waved her hand. Immediately, two squads rushed toward the cake shop.

Under normal circumstances, they would wait for a danger zone to subside before entering. But now, there was no time for that.

“There really is a B‑class task matching what he said.”

At the same moment, a girl with ashen hair, wearing denim shorts, stepped up from behind the woman in the red trench coat and handed over a tablet. “It’s related to that Crystal Skull.”

“This anomaly had already triggered several mild outbreaks of the plague. Originally, it was being investigated by Mr. Strange Bird as a grotesque phenomenon, but it had dragged on for a week without resolution.”

“Just yesterday, we suffered another failure, losing one execution member and six civilians.”

“No one expected it would be resolved today.”

At this point, she suddenly lowered her voice and said, “Just now, Miss Weiwei and a few execution members with her were also dealing with Crystal Plague infected here. From the looks of it, they weren’t acting on their own initiative.”

Though her voice wasn’t loud when she spoke of the previous matters, many people nearby still overheard.

Their expressions became even more astonished as their gazes kept shifting between Han Su and the figures of Doctor, Hei Hu, and Miss Crow behind the armed vehicle.

So, the Monster Investigator really had such nerve—to go off alone to deal with Song Chu‑shi, leaving an assistant and a few execution members to face a B‑class Crystal Plague on their own?

From the looks on their faces, it was as if they had just heard that a few children had taken down a professional boxer—sheer astonishment.

At this point, the Woman in the Red Trench Coat had no more questions to ask. She simply waved her hand, signaling the Ashen-Haired Girl beside her to stop speaking.

She lowered her head, just about to say something, when suddenly, a delighted shout rang out from not far away: “It… it was Mr. Strange Bird who sent them…”

It was none other than Mr. Strange Bird’s assistant who spoke.

Just now, he had been waiting in the car outside, witnessing everything unfold—and it felt like the sky was falling.

He didn’t understand how all of this had happened, but he knew one thing: Mr. Strange Bird had made a colossal mistake. He had actually gone after Song Chu‑shi alone—without reporting it, without any orders, even though his task was nearby.

Now, Song Chu‑shi had walked away unscathed, while Mr. Strange Bird hadn’t made a sound. Who knew what his condition was now?

And who knew what would happen once they returned to the Disaster Management Bureau...

If the signal was blocked after arriving at this street, then why didn’t he synchronize information with the others while en route?

But just when he felt the most hopeless, he saw Han Su—saw the Crystal Skull in his hand—and heard what he said. That brought him a wave of unexpected joy, prompting him to cry out without hesitation:

“This execution member is Mr. Strange Bird’s assistant, essentially his student. It was Mr. Strange Bird who discovered all this and devised the plan.”

“This task was carried out under Mr. Strange Bird’s leadership…”

“…”

As he spoke, he kept winking frantically at Han Su. At this point, the only way out was to let Mr. Strange Bird take credit for the success—only then might they pass the scrutiny of the Disaster Management Bureau.

The Woman in the Red Trench Coat was briefly stunned upon hearing this. It suddenly didn’t seem so far-fetched. But something still felt off. Her gaze swept over Miss Crow’s face behind Han Su, then settled on Han Su himself:

“So, this is all true?”

“…”

Now that the Investigator had spoken, it meant the situation was close to being confirmed.

And when it came to grotesque incidents involving Mysterious Believers, it only made sense if the plan had been orchestrated by an Investigator.

Han Su heard this and glanced at the assistant with a surprised look, then said, “That’s right.”

The assistant instantly beamed with delight:

Smart move!

Brilliant move!

With someone this clever, perhaps he too could follow Mr. Strange Bird’s path and carve out a place in the Disaster Management Bureau!

The Woman in the Red Trench Coat paused, then frowned, “Where is he?”

Upon hearing this question, Han Su’s expression suddenly turned solemn. After a long pause, he sighed deeply, turned to look at the Cake Shop, the corners of his mouth twitching slightly. He appeared extremely sorrowful as he said, “Mr. Strange Bird has already sacrificed himself.”

“What?”

The expression on the Woman in the Red Trench Coat’s face was one of unspeakable astonishment. Her voice even changed tone.

Han Su’s expression grew heavier, and he let out a low sigh, “Just now, during the effort to stop the Crystal Skull Organization from releasing the Spiritual Plague, Mr. Strange Bird was killed. That’s why I had to finish the job alone and bring this item out.”

“What?”

At those words, the crowd was instantly shaken.

Especially Mr. Strange Bird’s assistant, who jolted violently and dumbly raised his head to look toward the Cake Shop.

Han Su sighed, turned, and pointed, “The body is over there. You can go check.”

The Woman in the Red Trench Coat was stunned after hearing all this.

While they were speaking, the team that had entered earlier returned quickly. They instructed the cleanup crew to bring in a body bag to the Cake Shop, then came before the Woman in the Red Trench Coat and reported solemnly:

“There are clear signs the door was opened. We found the Monster Investigator inside. He took a bullet to the forehead and had no vital signs.”

“Preliminary examination suggests the bullet that killed him came from his own issued firearm.”

“We questioned the person inside the Cake Shop. She only said she saw a very ugly man suddenly rush in and point a gun at a very handsome man. She doesn't remember anything after that. When she woke up, only the ugly man was left in the shop.”

“…”

“Such blunt descriptions?”

The Woman in the Red Trench Coat couldn’t help but chuckle faintly at that.

But when she turned back around, her expression had already grown more serious. She suddenly reached out, grabbed Han Su’s right hand, glanced at his tiger’s mouth, then checked his left hand.

Finding no trace of having fired a gun, she slowly withdrew her gaze and said with a half-smile, “You got lucky, kid.”

“But once you’re back at the Disaster Management Bureau, you’d better be ready to explain yourself.”

“You’re a newly joined execution member. With the Investigator Mr. Strange Bird dead, how did you manage to handle a B‑class Crystal Plague contamination incident—one even regular Investigators would find difficult—entirely on your own?”

“…”

Han Su met her gaze, nodded, and smiled, “I’ve already thought of how I’ll write the report.”
