Chapter 12: A Fruit
John glanced down at the dying rat, his hand hovering over its fur. The urge to tame this creature gripped him. He wanted to explore the extent of his powers and push this new ability and see where it might lead.
He didn't know the full capacity of how many Beasts he could tame but that could wait. Right now, he was eager to see if he could make this Dungeon rat his own.
With focused mind, he reached out and placing his hand on the massive rat's bloody hide, just as he had done with Inky the day before.
He focused his mind and channeling his intent to tame through his touch. A flicker of light shimmered over the rat's form, and then it dissolved into a swirl of particles like a grain of caught in the wind and hovering before him in the air.
John felt a rush of energy as the particles reassembled and coalescing back into the same hulking rat — but this time, there was no murderous intent in his red eyes. Instead, it looked at him with a strange glint of loyalty, almost as if it respected him.
A satisfied grin broke out on John's face. He couldn't hide his pride as he gazed at his new Beast companion, his second successful taming.
Not far from him Marik, Amel, and Irene watched with open astonishment. Their eyes wide and they exchanged incredulous glances, they struggling to process what they'd just seen.
Taming a Dungeon Beast usually required trial and error. They need to test the methods to find the right approach to gain the creature's loyalty. But John had done it with clear ease seamlessly shifting from combat to taming without hesitation.
Marik let out a low whistle, his shield still clutched in hand.
"That was something else. Never seen anyone tame a Beast like that," he murmured.
"He didn't even try a taming method," Irene whispered, her expression a mix of awe and disbelief. "He just know what to do."
John chuckled, giving his new Dungeon Rat a pat on its thick hide, as if to reassure it of its place in his team.
John crouched down, patting Inky's head.
"Inky, meet our new friend here," he said with a grin, giving the massive rat a final once-over before settling on a name. "I'll call him... Miki."
Miki let out a pleased squeak, shaking his large body and making a low happy sound that somehow came across as a smile.
"Let's work together now, alright?" John said.
Inky gave an approving growl while Miki squeaked in agreement, the two creatures signaling their newfound friendship. John didn't know that the bond formed between the two is remarkably quick. The usual tamer need more time for their Beasts to accept each other.
When John turned back to his human friends though, he found them still watching him with eyes wide and a mixture of amazement and bewilderment.
"Haha, I figured I wouldn't let a chance like this go to waste, so I tried taming him," John said, scratching his head sheepishly. "Turns out it worked."
Irene's gaze narrowed slightly, curiosity burning behind her eyes. "How did you do that? And how did you know exactly the right method to tame it?"
"Uh...." John hesitated, wracking his brain for a reasonable excuse. "Just... a lucky guess?"
Marik gave a hearty chuckle, crossing his arms. "See, I told you he's talented!"
Amel, however, looked at John with a glint of suspicion, her brows knitted as she took in the scene.
"Hmm... talent, huh? That's still suspicious to me."
A bead of sweat ran down John's temple as Amel's gaze bore into him. But Irene intervened, brushing aside her concerns.
"It's not a bad thing, Amel. This way, we've got more strength on our side."
Amel gave a small nod, her gaze softening, though the suspicion lingered slightly. Still, she know that its true. She turned to her own Beast – the gentle bird with bright yellow feathers – and gave it a command.
"Go on, heal Marik and Irene," she murmured. John didn't suffere any damage so he don't need one.
The bird glowing faintly then fluttered over to Marik and Irene, its aura wrapping them in a warm light as their injuries gradually mended. Amel satisfied with the results and made a smile and she nodded to John as if to acknowledge his contribution.
They continued down the path after everybody healed. The air growing colder as they ventured deeper into the Dungeon.
Irene led them forward with careful and alert move. She mentioned that they will reach the second level when they see a metal door with twin snakes carving.
"What do we do when we find it?" John asked.
Irene shot him a firm look. "Nothing. Just walk past it. A Level 2 Dungeon is far beyond our abilities right now. Even trying to open it would be suicide."
"Oh." John nodded, understanding.
He took her words seriously but part of him couldn't help feeling a spark of curiosity.
A few minutes later, they came upon the door. Twin snakes coiled around each side, their metal bodies etched in intricate detail. The serpents' eyes seemed to glow faintly that made John's skin prickle. He swallowed, resisting the urge to linger as they moved past it in silence, pressing deeper into the Dungeon's depths.
He made a mental note of the door's location; someday, when he'd gained enough strength, he'd come back to explore what lay beyond.
They continued forward, winding through tunnels and chambers until a faint murmur reached their ears. The sound of voices echoed through the stone corridor and Irene gestured for them to halt.
"That's Gervas's team," she whispered. "We need to get close enough to hear what they're arguing about without being seen. It must be something important."
John gave a subtle nod, then glanced down at Inky. "Inky, use Dark Shroud on all of us."
Inky's eyes gleamed, and the shadows around them thickened, cloaking them all in a dark, near-invisible veil. They give John a nod of approval then moving in unison and slipped quietly into the shadows, approaching the sound of the voices.
Not long after, they could see Gervas's group huddled together, their tense faces illuminated by the glow of their torches. They appeared to be in a heated argument.
"We already found the Emberfruit!" Griselda said with low but agitated voice. "That alone is enough to evolve our Beasts. Why don't we pick it?"
The words struck a chord with Irene, Amel, and Marik, their eyes widening in shock as they exchanged glances.
John noticed their reactions and felt a surge of curiosity. He'd never heard of this fruit before, but from their expressions, it was clearly something rare and valuable.
"What's an Emberfruit?" he whispered to Irene.
She leaned close and said. "It's a rare fruit that can make a Beast to evolve, increasing their strength and abilities."
John's interest spiked, and he couldn't help but feel a thrill at the idea. He need to get that fruit.
