Infinite Evolution: My Idle Evolution System

Chapter 88: Evolving Weapons??

Cassius… felt that Yimin was a lid better not opened, so, like most inconvenient things in life, he pretended her weirdness did not exist. Instead, his eyes wandered over the bleeding-out morsels rolling through the sand a few feet away.

He placed his right hand against a scabbard that appeared out of thin air. Then, under the averted eyes of Stella, he unsheathed Lilith as fast as lightning.

For a moment, she looked like an Eastern-style katana soaring in an arc-shaped fashion. A fantastical crimson glow shot out from the backend of her edges, truly tying together the beautiful image that she embodied.

Then rolled the heads which, although still beautiful in their own traumatic way, were very much a clash of elements. Stella closed her eyes, too weak-stomached to watch something like that from beginning to end. Yimin, on the other hand, was not one to shy away from gore. In fact, she welcomed it! Even going so far as to lick her lips and wag her shimmering tail while staring at the human corpses collapsing to the sand dunes.

Following the end of a short-lived massacre:

SHING!

Cassius slung the human blood off his Lilith, then sheathed her back in the illusory sheath he materialized from thin air.

He walked up to the scattered corpses and collected everything they had on their persons. Afterward, he turned to the shivering Stella, curious to see how she would react to this spectacle he had set up.

Surprisingly, after a large gulp, she steadied her uneven breathing and stole his burning gaze. "I saw nothing!" she declared.

Cassius's frown curved upward at this proclamation, urging him to approach the silver-haired beauty collapsed on the ground. He stretched out a hand, which she gladly accepted after a very brief moment of hesitation.

She got back to her feet, trying her best not to grow too curious and glance at the gruesome corpses of what used to be her teammates.

"You understand that I had to kill them, don't you?" asked Cassius, his naturally intoned voice startling the nervous woman. "If I hadn't killed them and they decided to commit more of the same heinous acts as before, wouldn't their deeds be on my head?"

Stella seriously considered his words; she nodded meekly.

Cassius smiled.

He placed a warm hand on her head, then rubbed back and forth, which caused her to squirm in place. "You, unlike them, are someone who became a Hunter so you could help people. That is why I spared you, in case you were wondering. Oh, and your mom did something similar to mine… There is also that necklace wrapped around your neck… Well, I had numerous reasons to keep you alive. You are quite cute as well, so there's that too."

Stella's cheeks immediately reddened. With her enchanting looks, she had naturally been called pretty before, but none seemed as innocently sincere as the mysterious man before her.

"Well, anyway," said Cassius upon feeling the growing agitation of the dragon girl clinging to him. "I've just about finished up here, so why don't we make our retreat? Also, do you have qualms with discarding your previous identity? It would be more than a little bit of a hassle to have you explain to people why you were the only one among your party members to make it out of the Gate alive…"

"Having you come secretly live with me while letting the populace believe that the MoonShiners all died within the enigma of a Gate that closed without reason would probably be for the best."

Stella thought about it.

After a second, she complied with a nod. "...My father left me soon after Mother disappeared, and I don't have any other family, so I am fine… fine with living with you…" She blushed, struggling to maintain eye contact. "A-As long as you are fine with it, of course…!"

"Mhmm." Cassius made an –Okay– sign with his right hand. "If that is what you want, then it is what we shall do." 'Though, I'll definitely have quite the cumbersome time explaining this to Sasha and the other residents of my home…'

Stella was puzzled as to why he was breathing such a tired sigh, yet she felt an unexpected surge of joy well up inside her. She didn't know why, but she was kind of happy that he made an invitation like that one. A warm home environment was something she never had while growing up; it would be nice to experience the other side of the coin for a change.

Cassius seemed to think of something, prompting him to look down at the slightly vibrating Lilith. "An Evolution into the A- Rank?"

He was shocked by this revelation; however, when he saw all the drained, dry monster corpses in the desert, he suddenly felt like it made a lot of sense. "Hmm… If you're evolving to the A- Rank, then my Shadow Monarch's Hoodie surely isn't too far behind. Both it and my Hermes Boots rely on powerful monster materials to upgrade, so they naturally evolve slower than the versatile Lilith."

"But there are also those Equipment Upgrade Shards… From their descriptions, it seems that they can advance anything at or below the S-Rank by exactly 1 rank per shard."

Cassius had a bold idea surface in his mind. But to commence it, he would need to wait until Lilith's evolution concluded.

WHIRL!!

"Your blade…" Stella was astonished by what she was seeing. From the aura signatures emanating from the terrifying sword, she could tell that it was being promoted to something superior.

'But I have never heard of equipment capable of ranking up… How is what I'm seeing possible…?'

For the Hunters of this world, they could harvest the materials of monsters and use them to craft weapons with a Blacksmithing skill. However, beyond restoring an item to its original condition, no one had ever been able to upgrade the rank of an item. After all, doing something like that was akin to altering the original functions of the item, and due to the lingering personality aspects of monster materials, the adverse reactions simply made this impossible.

Just like the rank of a Hunter, the rank of their equipment also forever stayed the same.

'So, what is really happening here…!?'

...….
