Chapter 113: Kaida, The Leviathan Deity's Corpse
From that point in the timeline, Kaida entered Gates out of curiosity, found enjoyment from killing monsters, and then went on to found her own Guilds.
Although an S-Rank Hunter wasn't required to found a Guild, she saw a certain amount of appeal in building up her own forces. In one interview, she even claimed her actions were for the goal of "improving the size of her pack."
Twenty-something odd years later, we make it back to the present.
WHOOOOSH—!!
Even from thousands of meters away, Victor Rapido could feel the immense volcanic power being emitted from the beautiful woman known as Kaida Drakenshield. Her aura, unlike any other, resembled something more monster-like than even monsters themselves.
To be honest, it was scary.
Right now, in the center of the huge indoor arena, Kaida was punching an inanimate scarecrow-like object known as an Indestructible. It, like all of its fellow models, was designed for the sole purpose of taking hits, and in this case, it was made for getting the shit beaten out of it.
Yet, even with Kaida's country-shaking blows, the Indestructible remained intact. As its name suggested, it truly was indestructible—or at least, no one so far had been able to damage its hard, shiny green outer shell surface.
Truth be told, the materials that went into creating the Indestructible were not naturally acquired. Conversely, not a single material synthesized from planet Earth was capable of withstanding a single blow from an S-Rank Awakener. Not even diamonds, with all their hardness, stood the slightest chance of contending with the might of an S-Rank.
But these Indestructibles… They were not made with materials mined from Earth. Rather, they were only so hard because of the ridiculously tough scales of the deceased monster known only as the Leviathan Deity.
The Leviathan Deity's Corpse
On an undisclosed island just a few miles offshore from the Japanese mainland, there exists an armored facility guarded day in and day out by hundreds of Awakened Guards. Within the deepest depths of this facility lies a crackling Gate, a deep, dark black in color. Housed inside this Gate exists only a wide barren desert and a… corpse.
This corpse, which belonged to the Leviathan Deity, had always been present within the Black Gate. In fact, there had never been anything alive inside the Gate to begin with. It was just a massive plot of land with a giant aquatic dragon-like corpse sprawled out in the very center of the Gate.
Yet, even with the Gate's interior spanning hundreds of miles, the Leviathan Deity's corpse took up around 10% of that space, making it the centerpiece of the Gate.
Its large, slitted eyes, which had long since been quenched of all life, looked almost as if they were about to shoot open at any moment. To make things stranger, even though analysts predicted the Leviathan Deity to have died upwards of thousands of years ago, the corpse remained completely intact. From the head to the internals to the scales, everything looked exactly as it would if the behemoth were still alive and breathing.
But it was undoubtedly dead. There was no question about that.
Dozens of years following the mysteriously colored Gate's discovery, thousands of excavation and retrieval Awakener teams had gone into the Gate to extract the Leviathan Deity's precious materials. However, even with all that manpower, less than 5% of the colossal and unknown monster had been successfully taken out of the Gate.
Naturally, the first thing the Government did when they figured out just how unbelievably tough the Leviathan Deity's scales were was to consider their use for military purposes. But after discovering they couldn't be incorporated with any automated or electronic devices due to the lingering monster intent contained within them, the Government instead decided to support the Hunter Community as a "service for all their hard work."
Of course, all of that was just an excuse they cooked up to justify the losses incurred from this seemingly fruitless endeavor. The Leviathan Deity's scales were pretty much useless for anything other than extremely heavy, non-practical armor and training dummies. The guts and other internals, on the other hand, were poisonous to everyone—even those with poison resistance Skills. Anything more than a few ounces would result in the immediate death of the consumer.
And then there was its Magic Shard, which looked more like a miniature sun than anything that could be considered a pocket-sized loot commodity. Though, if utilized properly, the Leviathan's Magic Shard could power the entire world or even possibly become the most expensive object in existence.
However, once again, not a single living being could figure out how to make use of it, as there were simply too many unknowns surrounding it and the Leviathan Deity's existence. Thus, it, along with the majority of the Leviathan Deity's corpse, was left to rot inside that heavily guarded offshore facility. But then again, no parts of the behemoth had shown any signs of rotting or going bad, even after all this time, so not a single person high enough in power to know of its existence doubted that it would be around for many years to come.
Returning to the Dragolin Training Arena
"Even now, Kaida is trying to cause damage to the scales of the Leviathan, but she, as well as any, should know that is simply impossible…"
Victor Rapido sighed before shaking his head.
It was not the time to get caught up in distracting thoughts; after all, he had come here to discuss something important with someone whom he considered a friend.
Out of all the other S-Rank Hunters, Kaida was definitely one of the few who Victor got along with the most. This could mostly be attributed to their similar yearnings to find the best of certain aspects of themselves and prove that they were superior. Victor was obsessed with speed and any who claimed to be fast, whereas Kaida simply wanted to find out who the strongest people in the world were.
As one who embodied the prideful personality of a dragon, she naturally refused to be deemed weaker than anyone.
Then again, after Victor's encounter with that "monster," he fell to the lowest of lows and mostly gave up on his pursuit of finding and defeating any who were fast. After all, what was the point of being faster than a bunch of humans when something like that existed?
