Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Into the memorial

The hospital loomed ahead, its battered façade a grim reminder of the horrors within. The faint hum of distant groans and shuffling footsteps painted a haunting backdrop as Azizah, Jill, Leon, Kevin, and the UBCS team approached. Floodlights illuminated the area, highlighting makeshift barricades and the occasional flicker of movement behind shattered windows.

Azizah tightened the straps on her Widow's Bite gauntlets, her eyes scanning every shadow. "What's the layout like?" she asked Carlos, her voice steady despite the tension crackling in the air.

Carlos glanced at the building, his expression dark. "It's bad. Most of the lower floors are infested. We managed to clear out a path to the evac point on the second floor, but the infected keep coming. We don't have enough manpower to hold them off indefinitely."

"And yet, here we are," Jill muttered, gripping her weapon tighter.

Kevin, ever the cynic, smirked. "Great. Another day, another death trap."

Tyrell ignored the comment, stepping forward to address the group. "The plan is simple. UBCS will hold the perimeter while you four clear out the second floor. Once it's secure, we'll start moving survivors up. Stick to the plan, and we might just get out of this alive."

Azizah raised an eyebrow. "And what happens if things go sideways?"

Carlos hesitated, his gaze flickering to Tyrell, then back to the group. "We improvise."

The air inside the hospital was thick with decay, the smell of blood and rot nearly overwhelming. Flickering fluorescent lights cast eerie shadows on the walls, where dark streaks of blood told stories of violent ends. Azizah's enhanced senses picked up the faintest sound of distant moans, growing louder as they ventured deeper.

Leon's flashlight swept across the hallways, revealing overturned gurneys and abandoned medical supplies. "This place feels like it's watching us," he murmured.

"It probably is," Jill replied grimly. She gestured toward a set of double doors ahead. "Second floor should be this way."

Carlos moved to take point, his assault rifle at the ready. "Stay close. We don't know how many are still lurking."

Azizah fell in step behind him, her gauntlets sparking faintly as she activated them. She could feel the tension in the air, each step bringing them closer to the unknown.

As they ascended the staircase, a loud crash echoed from above. The group froze, weapons raised, their eyes scanning the dimly lit stairwell.

"Movement on the second floor," Tyrell said, his voice steady but low. "Stay sharp."

The moment they reached the landing, chaos erupted. A swarm of infected burst through the doors, their grotesque forms illuminated in the flickering light. Their guttural growls filled the air as they charged, eyes glazed with hunger.

"Contact!" Carlos shouted, opening fire.

The hallway became a cacophony of gunfire, growls, and the sickening sound of bullets tearing into flesh. Azizah moved with precision, her system-enhanced reflexes allowing her to dodge and counter with deadly efficiency. Her Widow's Bite gauntlets sent arcs of electricity through the infected, dropping them in violent spasms.

"Keep them back!" Jill yelled, unloading her pistol into an advancing zombie. She kicked it back into the horde and fired a clean headshot.

Leon covered their flank, his handgun steady as he picked off stragglers. "We're getting pinned here!"

Azizah spotted a vent above the doorframe, just large enough for her to slip through. "I've got an idea. Cover me!"

Without waiting for a response, she leaped onto a nearby cabinet, pulling herself into the vent with practiced ease. Crawling through the narrow space, she could hear the battle raging below. Her system chimed softly in her mind, highlighting a route to flank the horde.

Emerging on the other side of the horde, Azizah dropped silently to the floor. She quickly located a fire extinguisher on the wall and yanked it free, aiming it toward the group of infected. With a quick twist of the valve, a burst of freezing mist engulfed the zombies, disorienting them.

"Now!" she shouted.

Jill and Carlos took the cue, their bullets tearing through the staggered horde. In moments, the hallway was littered with the lifeless bodies of the infected.

Leon wiped sweat from his brow, his chest heaving. "That was close."

"Too close," Kevin added, reloading his shotgun. "You've got a knack for crazy plans, Lockhart."

Azizah smirked, deactivating her gauntlets. "Sometimes, crazy is all we've got."

As the group regrouped, Carlos glanced at Azizah, his expression one of cautious respect. "Not bad. You move like you've done this before."

Azizah met his gaze evenly. "Let's just say I've had practice."

Tyrell interrupted, his tone sharp. "Save the compliments for later. We've got survivors to move."

They proceeded to the designated evac point, a makeshift safe zone fortified with metal barriers and scattered supplies. A handful of survivors—tired, scared, but alive—waited anxiously as the group arrived.

One of them, a young nurse, approached Jill hesitantly. "Is it safe? Can we really get out of here?"

Jill nodded, her voice firm. "We're getting you out. Stay close and follow our lead."

Despite the tension, the team moved quickly to evacuate the survivors. Carlos took the lead, guiding them through the cleared hallways while Tyrell and Jill covered the rear. Azizah stayed close to Leon and Kevin, her senses on high alert for any sign of danger.

As the survivors were prepped for evacuation, the air shifted.the sound of distant roars echoed through the hospital. Azizah's system chimed in her mind, warning of an incoming threat.

"Something's coming," she said, her voice low but urgent.

Nicholai's smirk widened. "Good. Things were starting to get boring."

Azizah shot him a glare but said nothing, her focus shifting to the task at hand. Whatever was coming, she knew they'd have to face it together—at least for now.
