Chapter 24 - Seireitei
Flying high towards Shin'ō Academy aboard Vimana, Gilgamesh sat on his throne, petting Yoruichi in her black cat form as usual. Before him, Renji and Rukia listening intently to Yoruichi's words.
"The Shin'ō Academy we're heading to is located within Seireitei," Yoruichi explained. "Seireitei lies at the center of the Soul Society, surrounded by tall walls known as the Sekkiseki walls. The Sekkiseki stones that build these walls release waves that decompose spiritual energy, creating a spherical shield called Shakonmaku, protecting Seireitei from spiritual intrusions from all directions, both above and underground."
"To penetrate the Shakonmaku, one must possess enough spiritual pressure and energy. Therefore, under normal circumstances, people from Rukongai cannot enter Seireitei. To enter Seireitei, people from Rukongai must pass through one of the four great gates located in the east, south, west, and north. These gates are called the Blue Stream, Red Hollow, White Way, and Black Ridge gates, respectively. Each gate is guarded by a gatekeeper selected from among Rukongai's elite."
"If I remember correctly, the guardian of the South Gate, the Red Hollow Gate, is named Jidanbō Ikkanzaka."
Yoruichi's information was well-known to Gilgamesh, so he didn't pay much attention. Instead, he continued to pet Yoruichi while his focus remained on the attribute panel that only he could see.
With his spiritual pressure reaching 50,000, Gilgamesh noticed that the closer they got to Seireitei, the higher the concentration of spiritual particles in the air. This made his previously stalled spiritual energy attribute rise again, causing him to ponder.
Gilgamesh had always been curious why the further one goes into Rukongai, the lower the concentration of spiritual particles. Logically, the concentration of spiritual particles in a world should be balanced, with only slight differences. However, the spiritual particle concentration in places like Kusajishi and Takoyaki was alarmingly low.
Looking towards Seireitei, he wondered whether the place was initially chosen for its high spiritual particle concentration or if it became the most spiritually rich area because of something done by its builders.
If it were the latter, it would mean that the people who built Seireitei used some method to draw spiritual particles from the Soul Society. Gilgamesh hoped it was the latter because then he could replicate that method to enrich the spiritual particles in the Kingdom of Uruk.
The more spiritually rich an area, the more it can nurture talented Shinigami. Unfortunately, the Kingdom of Uruk was too poor in spiritual particles, so much so that no new child with potential to become a Shinigami could be born there.
Renji and Rukia, having been born outside of Kusajishi, possessed the potential to become Shinigami. Before heading to Shin'ō Academy, Gilgamesh had sifted through his territory but found no one with the potential to become a Shinigami among Uruk's current population of over 100,000.
This stark reality would greatly hinder Uruk's development. Therefore, whether it was the former or the latter scenario, Gilgamesh would find a way to make Uruk spiritually rich.
Before they knew it, Vimana had reached the skies above the southern district of Rukongai. Finding a deserted spot, Gilgamesh landed Vimana and then stored it back in the Gate of Babylon. He knew when to hide his sharpness to avoid unnecessary trouble and potential confrontations with Seireitei's Shinigami and nobles.
Although confident in his abilities, Gilgamesh was not arrogant enough to believe he could single-handedly take on all of Seireitei. After landing, Yoruichi spoke up, "From here, I'll lead you to the Red Hollow Gate. When we arrive, tell the gatekeeper Jidanbō Ikkanzaka that you wish to take the entrance exam for Shin'ō Academy."
She continued walking, adding, "Follow me closely and don't fall behind. I won't speak again until we arrive."
Gilgamesh, Renji, and Rukia followed her without hesitation. The southern district of Rukongai was large and bustling, with a constant flow of people. Renji and Rukia, like country bumpkins in a grand city, couldn't hide their amazement.
"Wow, there's such a big river over there!"
"What's that smell? It's so delicious!"
"That must be a restaurant, the place where you can eat all sorts of delicious food!"
Their wide-eyed wonder drew curious glances from passersby. Suddenly, Renji pointed at something, his face turning red, and stuttered, "Th-th-th-there…"
Following his gaze, the group saw scantily clad women beckoning passersby. Yoruichi and Gilgamesh knew what this place was and remained unfazed, but Rukia, seeing such a scene for the first time, blushed furiously.
Rukia quickly moved in front of Gilgamesh, saying, "King, don't look. Those things will dirty your eyes."
She then muttered quietly, "If you want to look, you can look at mine…"
Her last words were so soft that even Gilgamesh couldn't hear them, though he discerned her thoughts through the Star of Omniscient. His crimson eyes glanced at Rukia's figure before recalling Yoruichi's tall, graceful form and shaking his head slightly.
Although Rukia was still young, Gilgamesh remembered that even as an adult, her figure wasn't that impressive. Hmm, maybe I can help her improve…
