Chapter 205: The Sinister Plan of the Bandits

"What did you do to the Ravenhill villagers?" Mo Jian asked calmly, staring at the scholarly man.

On his knees, the scholar was still in shock at what had just happened. Over twenty Peak Core Refining Warriors served as guards for a mere caravan.

How was that possible?

At their stage, only a few things could move their hearts. Their only pursuit was to break through to the Golden Core Realm.

Yet, here they were, willing to become mere guards.

Even though they were nothing but mere bandits, he still retained his pride as a Peak Core Refining Warrior.

While he was lost in thought, a middle-aged woman approached him, forced his mouth open, and placed a pill.

He glared at the woman in a Daoist robe and sneered. If they thought they could pry out any secret from him—

They were mistaken.

Mo Jian looked at the scholar without worry. A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

He was waiting for the pill to take effect.

Suddenly, the scholar began to groan, veins protruding from his forehead and his eyes bloodshot.

Steam rose from his body.

Ahhhhhh!

A soul-rending scream escaped from his lips and he fell to the ground, wriggling in pain.

Ahhhhh!

He screamed once. His cry cut through the quiet night like a cold dagger.

"P-P-lease…" he begged.

"K-Kill…m-e…."

Ahhhh! Ahhhh!

Inside his body, his blood essence was burning slowly; his meridians felt like fire.

The pain was beyond what a human being could withstand.

Rolling on the ground, he wailed continuously, blood seeping from the corners of his eyes and mouth.

Looking at him, all the guards felt a cold shiver run down their spines. They shuddered and looked at the calm woman standing beside Mo Jian.

They were deeply scared.

What was that pill? they screamed in their hearts.

For a Peak Core Refining Warrior to be reduced to this—they couldn't imagine the kind of pain he was going through.

"So, are you ready to talk?" Mo Jian asked calmly.

"Ahhhhh…Y-e..s." he stammered, groaning in pain.

Still wriggling on the ground, his blood tissues had burst, dyeing him in blood.

Unbothered by his condition, Mo Jian continued. "What is going on here?"

"Ahh! W-e…sacrifcie…ah….ah…P-lease…" His words were jumbled but everyone could piece it together.

"Ahh! P-please… we use them…ahh…as a sacrifice for the ancient formation…"

"W-e..are…group of bandits on the route… A…man…promised us…we can breakthrough to….the Golden Core…Realm… if…if….ah…ah.. we sacrifice them…"

"P-Please…kill me….K-ill m…e"

Listening to him, Mo Jian had a bad premonition.

He had encountered such an evil formation back at the Western Region, and it was through a stroke of luck that he escaped in one piece.

"Spread out and search everywhere," Mo Jian commanded in a solemn tone.

"Find the ancient formation immediately."

Realizing the gravity of the situation, the guards spread out and began to search for the formation.

Elder Zhao and Elder Bai Delan came out of their hiding and looked at Mo Jian.

"Young Master, what is going on?" Elder Zhao asked.

With a solemn expression, Mo Jian responded, "If I'm not wrong, that formation should be a gateway to the Netherworld."

What!

Netherworld?

They were shocked.

"Young Master, are you sure?" Elder Zhao couldn't help but ask once again.

"Very sure. Where do you think those vengeful spirits come from, and why did they appear at our border?" he asked.

All the elders wore grave expressions. Without waiting for them to recover from their shock—

He continued, "When I was at the border, we discovered an ancient formation, and I managed to destroy it."

"Back then, a Wailing Revenant was protecting the formation. I almost got killed by it."

Thinking of it sent a cold shiver down his spine. Back then, his actions were reckless.

But now, he knew better.

"If this is true, we can't leave without destroying the formation," Elder Li Huang said slowly, her voice solemn.

"Young Master!"

Just then, a voice shouted. From the distance, a young woman was running with her face covered in dread.

"What happened?" Mo Jian asked.

"Young Master…vengeful spirits are coming…." she said with a trembling voice.

When everyone heard this, they realized the worst had happened.

Elder Zhao and Elder Bai Delan exchanged subtle glances and saw the seriousness on each other's faces.

Mo Jian looked at the woman and asked calmly, "Did you see their rank?"

"Y-yes…" she nodded. "There are many Restless Phantoms and Wailing Revenants. B-but…"

"But what?!" Elder Li Huang snapped.

The situation was too dire for such a clumsy pause.

"I felt something dangerous hiding in the hill," she replied in one breath.

"Something dangerous…"

Mo Jian turned and looked at the three elders, waiting for their explanation.

What was more dangerous than a Wailing Revenant?

"This is bad…" Elder Zhao said gravely. "We need to act immediately."

Elder Bai Delan and Elder Li Huang nodded.

"Young Master, call back your men," Elder Zhao said seriously.

Mo Jian nodded and commanded his people to return. Although he did not know what was lurking in the shadows—

His instinct was telling him it would be very dangerous.

With the guards returning, they could all feel the thick tension in the air.

Even a fool could feel the situation had just gone from bad to worse.

"Against the Vengeful Spirit, normal weapons are useless," Mo Jian said seriously. "Everyone, keep your weapon. Follow Zhao Tian to receive a different weapon."

Many of the guards were confused, but they still followed the order.

Quickly, Zhao Tian led them to one of the biggest carriages and began to distribute weapons made from Ember Flame.

Before their departure, Mo Jian had prepared for everything. He made sure he was ready for whatever happened on the way and in the Central Region.

And now, his preparation was coming in handy.

Receiving the weapons, the guards returned to their formation, waiting for orders.

"At the back of the village, there is a hill where vengeful spirits are coming out," Mo Jian announced.

"We need to destroy all the vengeful spirits, but that is not our real mission. Our real mission is to destroy the ancient formations that open the Netherworld gateway."

Most of the guards were stunned. Only those from the Western Region were calm.

This was not the first time they had encountered a vengeful spirit. They could be said to have deep experience against them.

"Kill as quickly as possible. The weapon won't last long," Mo Jian warned. "If you find your weapon is not working against the vengeful spirit, return immediately to change it."

"Young Master… They are coming," a voice shouted from a distance.

"Now go," he commanded.

Leading the charge, the old withered man gripped his sword tightly.

As they passed the houses, they felt the temperature drop a couple of degrees Celsius.

Under their leather armor, they felt a biting cold against their skin.

Huh!

They all sucked in a cold breath. They tensed up.

Howl!

Suddenly, they heard eerie cries from the distance and they shivered.

Some weak-minded Intermediate Core Refining Warriors began to tremble in fear as if they were facing their worst nightmares.

While some began to hear dangerous whispers.

The previously orderly guards descended into chaos.

This was the effect of the Vengeful Spirit; the Restless Phantom and Wailing Revenant could induce various fears into the hearts of weak humans.

"Snap out of it!" the old withered man shouted and released his aura.

Whoosh!

Instantly, the mental effect of the Restless Phantom and the Wailing Revenant vanished from their bodies.

Huh!

Those under the spell gasped for fresh air, their spines drenched in cold sweat.

Without seeing the vengeful spirits, they had already lost their minds from the mental attack.

"Focus your heart on the battle and you won't be affected by their mind attack. Don't be distracted," the Lonely Spear advised from the side.

They nodded, grateful for the old withered man's timely action and Lonely Spear's advice.

"Here they come," another Peak Core Refining Warrior said in a grave tone.

Tens of meters from them, the Restless Phantoms floated toward them while the Wailing Revenants walked forward.

The wails from the Wailing Revenants would make any weak-hearted human suffer a heart attack.

But none of the guards moved.

They had all signed the contract and their fate was locked with the Thousand Wealth Chamber for the next 50 years.

"Ready…" the old withered man called in a low, deep voice.

"Attack!" he shouted and dashed forward.

The Peak Core Refining Warriors would tackle the Wailing Revenants, while the early and intermediate Core Refining Warriors would handle the Restless Phantoms.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Instantly, a life-and-death battle ensued at the back of the Ravenhill village.

The seemingly ordinary swords in their hands glowed when they touched the vengeful spirits.

Howl! Howl!

Against the ordinary sword, the fearful Wailing Revenants were being killed easily.

Seeing this, the guards breathed a sigh of relief and their confidence surged.

Looking at the never-ending stream of vengeful spirits, they were not scared.

Their swords moved swiftly with confidence and purpose as they tried to push the vengeful spirits back.
