"Flowers..."
In the forest outside Kuja City, not far from where the sea monkeys were brewing wine, Robin was practicing her Devil Fruit abilities. Focusing on her fruit powers instead of haki or physical techniques suited her better, as she didn't have much of an aptitude for the latter.
Since she'd already gained a basic understanding of Haki, which was enough for her purposes, she preferred to hone her powers in a way that was both efficient and effective.
Over the past few days, after reading the First Empress of Amazon Lily's notes on the national treasure, the Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi), Robin had many new ideas for using her fruit abilities.
Long ago, she had been called a "monster" by the children around her for having the Flower-Flower Fruit, and it wasn't until she met the giant marine Saul that she began to appreciate her abilities.
Later, when she met Liam, who temporarily borrowed her power, his uninhibited use of it opened a new window for her. And after reading the notes of the first Empress, she gained new insight into how to further develop her fruit.
According to Liam's casual remarks and Dr. Vegapunk's research, Paramecia-type Devil Fruits can generally be divided into three categories:
1. Superhuman Physique
The user's body is transformed into something non-human. This can be a permanent, passive transformation or an ability that can be activated at will. Liam's Shiro Shiro no Mi (Castle-Castle Fruit) belonged to this category. He also joked that "diamond humans" or "golden humans" might also exist.
2. ''Super-Material Generation''
The user remains an ordinary person, but can freely produce and manipulate a certain material, often using a variety of creative techniques.
3. ''Supernatural Powers''
The user gains a unique ability with extraordinary properties. Examples include the Push-Push Fruit of the giant Morley, the Pipe-Pipe Fruit Liam once had, and Shichibukai Moria's Shadow Fruit, which could control shadows.
However, the Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi) didn't fit neatly into the "super-material" category. Robin could create petals and condense them into physical extensions of herself, her own flesh and blood.
Was this because she fully understood how to create a human body? Naturally, no. Even if she could, such a feat would be too draining to be useful in battle. Did she completely understand how to transfer sensory feedback to her main body? Again, no.
If she could control that aspect, she would have disabled the sensation of pain, making her fruit's combat potential much stronger by avoiding the sharp feedback she currently felt whenever a clone was hit.
Creating physical extensions and receiving sensory feedback were innate features of the Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi). All she had done was explore those latent capabilities further.
And when Robin used her fruit to create clones, it didn't consume an equivalent amount of stamina. If creating an identical clone consumed the same amount of energy as her own body, her ability would be practically useless. Instead, the fruit itself seemed to carry most of the energy burden.
If Dr. Vegapunk's hypothesis that Devil Fruits were artificially created were true, it was clear that the Flower-Flower Fruit's abilities— to create petals, condense a body mirroring the user's qualities, and transmit sensations back to the user— were intrinsic features built into it.
In short, the Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi) had both material creation and supernatural abilities, making it a mix of types two and three. As Liam would say, this was a "Special Paramecia."
After practicing for a while, Robin paused to catch her breath, wiping a bit of sweat from her forehead. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Liam hopping down from a treetop, seemingly intrigued by something unusual.
What could it be?
Curious, Robin followed him. She focused briefly on her Kenbunshoku Haki (Observation Haki), which she hadn't fully mastered, and sensed that Liam's ghostly companion was leading him somewhere.
Had B.I.B. found something?
Robin continued to follow and soon caught up, finding Liam standing in front of something on the ground, looking intently.
"This is..."
Robin moved to the side and saw what Liam was examining— a giant bear paw print embedded in the ground.
"Is there a bear that big on Kuja Island?" She asked in surprise, crouching down and summoning several hands with her Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi) to feel around the massive impression.
Liam crouched beside her, holding out his hand for comparison; his hand was barely the size of one of the bear's toes. The paw print pit was so enormous, it dwarfed even Liam, who stood at nearly six feet tall. Robin had only ever seen creatures of this size on Rusukaina Island.
"Even if there were," Liam replied, standing up and searching the area with B.I.B., "there shouldn't be just one print left behind."
Robin pondered aloud, "So… this could be an artificial mark?"
"Let's look around and find out," Liam replied with a grin.
With B.I.B. splitting off, the three of them began to search the outer forests of Kuja Island, each hoping to find either the person Liam suspected or perhaps an unlucky soul who'd been slapped all the way here by some giant force.
Robin and Liam walked together, though she refrained from her usual search method, where countless eyes and ears would sprout on trees within a few dozen meters.
Since she'd learned Kenbunshoku Haki (Observation Haki), this range was fully within Liam's detection as well if he paid attention. Whatever she could find with her Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi), he could sense with his Kenbunshoku Haki.
"Still not quite at Rayleigh's level with this Haki…" Liam thought as they walked through the woods. "I can't just sweep an entire island in a flash, catalog every beast, and gauge its strength like he did with Luffy. My Observation Haki barely covers this one island… Hm? That presence near where B.I.B. went—it's the Snake Princess? What's she doing outside the city?"
Although curious, Liam didn't think it was his place to wonder about the Snake Princess's intentions. He continued searching the forest for traces of the bear, but after a long time, they found nothing. Meanwhile, B.I.B. had started making his way back from the island's far side, seemingly empty-handed as well.
Liam and Robin turned to head back. Suddenly, the black-armored shadow drifted through the trees, and as Liam and Robin parted the branches on the other side, all three found themselves staring in the same direction, each with varying degrees of surprise.
There, sitting silently on a stone near the shore, was a man with an extraordinarily muscular build, standing about six or seven meters tall and wearing a bear-eared hat. He was watching the sea monkeys as they brewed their wine.
The sea monkeys, visibly stressed, had been about to slack off or maybe even slip back into the sea, but they froze at the sight of yet another dangerous human who'd replaced the previous one.
Bartholomew Kuma held a thick book in his hands and turned to look at… the three of them. His seemingly pure white eyes rested on B.I.B.'s face, which glowed faintly with its own white light.
Then his gaze shifted momentarily to Robin, who was keeping her "Jolyne Kujo" disguise intact as she always did outside of a private space with Liam. Finally, his eyes landed on the tall, dark-haired young man standing confidently before him.
Robin recognized the book Kuma held. It looked similar to the "Bible" she had seen Dragon hold on Momoiro Island.
Liam met Kuma's gaze with a grin. "Hey! Kuma Nii-San! Can I borrow your Devil Fruit ability to play around a bit?"
Bartholomew Kuma merely stared. So, this was the young man that Dragon and Ivankov had mentioned?
