Chapter 347: Tracking the emperor
"Really? How did you do it?"
"In this century, you can't hide from technology. Wafner needs a way to keep in touch with his generals. His communications are heavily encrypted, but we managed to identify them"
"Do you have the coordinates?"
"No not yet. The communication scheme uses mnemonic files that modify the user's position through a morping program that…"
"Speak less difficult"
"Sigh. We will trace him in the next few minutes, but we need the line to remain constantly active"
Jocelyne frowned. "Okay, I understand. Stay on the line" she said, and then she ran to the other heads of state. "Hey Al! I need you!"
Everyone turned to her, including the allosaurus in question. "What happens?"
"RE/SYST has traced Wafner's communications" Jocelyne replied, and everyone let out a surprised and hopeful 'oooh'. Finding Wafner meant ending the threat of nuclear attack once and for all! "Where is he?" the president Trey Thompson asked.
"They don't know yet. They need Wafner to keep communication with someone" Jocelyne replied, then she tossed the cell phone to Al. "As soon as they find him, communicate his location to lord Sobek"
The allosaurus nodded. "I get it"
"Good. President Palma, will you allow me?" Jocelyne asked, then took the man's cell phone without even waiting for an answer. "We have to buy as more time as possible. Nero, tell me the number! I will call the emperor personally!"

All of the imperial army fell in the end. Under the fury of the dinosaurs led by Sobek, nothing and no one survived.
The battlefield turned into an expanse of human corpses and the remains of destroyed war machines. In years to come, that plain would be remembered with terrible fame and no one would go near it for decades. After centuries, those who would have crossed it would still occasionally find the remains of a tank emerging from the ground, or even human bones that for some reason had re-emerged from the depths of the earth.
When his overdeveloped senses confirmed that there were no more humans alive in the area, Sobek's heart finally began to slow down. The adrenaline that had moved him up to that moment went out and the spinosaurus began to regain lucidity.
The acrid smell of blood stung his nostrils. He knew that most likely at that moment he was covered in it and that surely that smell would accompany him for several days to come, but he didn't care. In fact, he hardly cared.
Normally, Sobek was not one to revel in bloodshed. But that day, something had snapped inside him. If it hadn't been for his common sense, he probably would have run to the nearest town and started making a massacre. He wanted blood and meat in his fangs.
He forced himself to calm down and gradually that bloodlust faded, replaced by a deep tiredness. Even though he had recovered much of his strength, he hadn't yet fully recovered from the fight on the Moon and had wasted a lot of energy fighting the imperial army. He had to call on all his strength to avoid falling to the ground a second time, an act certainly not decent and which he absolutely did not want to do in front of his subordinates.
"Pack leader, you're back" Buck's voice snapped him back to reality. The tyrannosaurus was there, accompanied by Old Li, Carnopo, Apache, Rambo and Snock.
"Yes, my friends, I'm back" he replied. "Forgive me if I left you alone"
"You don't have to apologize, pack leader" Old Li said. "It wasn't your fault"
"Yeah. Anyway, you all did a great job" Sobek had obviously already extracted the events of the last few hours from their minds thanks to the [Contract], so he was aware of what had happened and knew that Blue, Eema, Pierce, Monica, Mazu and Al were not there because the first two were on Ares, the stegosaurus was aiding the Eden Union's defense forces, the brachiosaurus was helping with the evacuation, the mosasaur was providing support to the Eden Union's navy, and Al was busy parleying with heads of state from around the world. "But it's not over yet"
The six dinosaurs nodded. "We are still looking for the emperor and the last remaining bombs" Rambo said.
"I know it. Do your best and get ready for nuclear attack". Now that the adrenaline was gone, Sobek was back to thinking about the bigger picture. He knew that, even if the apocalypse was now averted, the Empire still had plenty of weapons. "We need to think about the worst-case scenario and…"
Suddenly Al appeared among them holding a cell phone. "Pack leader! I'm glad you're recovered, but you have to listen to me" he exclaimed. "RE/SYST got in touch with us. They found a way to track Wafner. They're trying now"
Sobek's eyes widened. "How long will that take?"
"They do not know. They're doing their best" Al replied, showing his cell phone. "I am in contact with them right now. They'll let me know the instant they've succeeded"
Sobek nodded, then looked at Rambo and Snock. "You two! As soon as you have the information, immediately head to the coordinates. Find Wafner and find out how to stop the bombs or where they are. Use any means possible. When he confesses, kill him"
Sobek had always provided his enemies with the option of being tried for their war crimes or dying in honorable combat. But this time he had no intention of it. From his point of view, Wafner had betrayed everything, even his own world. He didn't deserve an honorable death. He didn't even deserve Sobek to kill him. The spinosaurus wanted Wafner to die alone and without any audience, in a dark and cold place and with no one bothering to find out how he died.
Snock nodded vigorously. "We will, pack leader. I'll be sure to bring you his head"
"No" Sobek replied. "Leave his body where it is. I never want to see that worm again in my life"
The giganotosaurus sensed hatred in the words of his pack leader, and this made him angrier than he already was. "It will be done, pack leader"
**********
Wafner was alone in his bunker under the imperial palace. A banal, but functional hiding place: no one would have checked there. As they used to say, if he wanted to hide something, it had to be in plain sight.
He had already sent his guards away. He wanted to be alone with thoughts of him.
It was over. He had lost and he knew it. The conquest of Ares had failed, the army had been defeated, the bombs had been destroyed, his scientists had betrayed him. By now, the Empire was on the verge of collapse. The few generals who survived the purge had fled. He was the only one left and he knew it was only a matter of time before they tracked him down.
There was now nothing more to do. He could only wait. All his plans had failed and now the only honorable gesture he could do was shoot himself in the head and die as an emperor and not a prisoner.
He was mulling over whether to really commit suicide, when suddenly his communication device (an object similar to a cell phone, but much more complex) rang. Wafner was startled by the sound, not expecting any of his subjects to still be alive or, if he was, to take the risk of contacting him. To tell him what, then? Out of curiosity, he turned it on. "Hello?"
"Emperor Wafner, very pleased to hear your voice. I am the president of the Great Republic of Beleriard, Jocelyne Jersey"
