Chapter 356: Abomination in the Tunnel?
Lillian stared at Millis with narrowed eyes, baffled by the amount the woman had spent on a game. Although she too had spent some on games in the past, it definitely wasn't to this degree.
Millis, holding up her hands in defence, felt a drop of sweat pour out and run down her cheek. She couldn't help but feel Lillian was pressuring her just a "tad" bit too much.
"Alright, look, I still got... Like, half of it left? It was all for a good cause alright!"
"And that cause being to spend five grand on a game?"
"N-no— well, yes, but ya have to understand in the name of big tittie waifus, alright!?" Millis stuttered before waving her hand at the girl, "A-anyway, it's mah money, anyway. Big deal~..."
Lillian gave an exasperated sigh, unable to refute that it was indeed the woman's money. Millis should be able to do whatever she wanted, but she couldn't help but feel it was for the wrong reason.
'I feel like a mom...'
She then took an unconscious glance towards a mountain in the distance. The place where the town's mine was.
It was also a source of most of its profits, going by what was written on the sign.
After a little bit of walking, they finally found a hotel where they could stay. And since Lillian was such a charitable person, she decided to buy Millis a room too, which the Heroine was extremely grateful for.
Once the two bid each other goodbye, they went into their respective room, which were fortunately on the same floor.
Lillian took a look inside her hotel room, finding it to be clean and pristine, as well as luckily being cool. Something she was happy about due to the hot weather.
She had bought a room with two beds, one for her and one for Viesta, for when she finally gets here.
Kicking off her shoes, she leapt onto her bed, finding it comfortably soft and cold as her body sank into the blanket and mattress underneath her.
Turning around and lying on her back, she pulled out her phone and stared at her screen. Should she give Marionette a quick call to see how she was doing?
"Mmm... Nah, I think she's quite busy, right now."
And after she muttered that, time quickly went by as Viesta finally arrived at the hotel. Apparently, it might take a day for it to be completely made, which Lillian was fine with.
Stepping out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her hair and a different set of clothes, she gestured for Viesta to take it as she walked to the window.
Viesta, who was about to move into the bathroom, couldn't help but mention:
"You were prepared for this to be a multiple-day trip, huh? Well, ain't you prepared."
Lillian chuckled, "Well, sometimes my clothes get ripped up with I'm fighting." She then opened the curtains and stared at the sky, finding it had turned dark already.
She shook her head before hopping into her bed and preparing to go to bed. But right as she was about to do this, she couldn't help but hope that, due to both her and Millis's presence here, nothing bad would happen.
***
Back at the tunnel where Lillian's train was attacked, workers roamed around, blocking off the entrance into the tunnel as they tried to figure out what was going on.
A worker who was staring at the container of Barrel Moles couldn't help but scratch his head in confusion. He glanced at the holes in the metal walls.
"Why did these guys even go through the trouble of doing this?"
His colleague glanced at him from the side, holding a clipboard and pen. He walked to the worker's side and scratched his head as well, equally as puzzled.
While cases like these had come up in the past, they would be able to identify the reasons for the monsters to become like this. In most cases, due to starvation.
However, it didn't seem like the case for this.
"We've been using these guys are pest control for a while and with the subtle influx in monsters in the past couple months, surely they've been well fed, right?"
His colleague shook his head, tired.
"Looks like we might need to contact mages to deal with it in the future instead of relying on monsters."
"I suppose... But I guess we can install turrets, can't we?"
"That would need constant maintenance. Not easy really in such a terrain."
As the two conversed on possible solutions and reasons for the monster's abrupt behaviour, they were immediately frightened as their superior appeared behind them.
"Do I pay you guys to chat or work? Quickly hurry up, I want to get this over and done with!"
The two watched angrily as their superior walked away, greatly annoyed before sighing. They patted each other on the shoulder as they got back to work.
And as they were, they couldn't help but feel the ground shudder as a deafening screech echoed through the cave, with them being the nearest.
After regaining their balance, they quickly dodged small chunks of stone that fell from the roof, followed by a shower of dust.
"What the hell?" The worker whispered, taking off his hard hat and brushing the dust off with an annoyed look. He then took a glance at his colleague and found them staring up with wide eyes.
He raised an eyebrow and found the other workers staring up at the ceiling with darkened expressions.
Curiosity took over him as he raised his eyes towards the ceiling. And what he found... Caused his heart to stop for a brief moment.
The metal casing that covered the ceiling above him had been completely pried open like a tin can—the edges held open by large flexible claws, each 3-4 metres long.
They shone with a metallic sheen as they scraped against the material, scratching at it and causing a chilling screech to echo.
The worker then drew his eyes to the centre of the hole and discovered an entity that struck fear into his heart.
Teeth as long as an average person's were angled outside the maw of a horrific beast.
They were unnaturally and disgustingly yellow while also releasing a pungent odour. They were chipped, but that seemed to only add to their deadliness.
The abomination had eyes for each individual worker, plus more, as it was shown with an ominous dark red light.
And as many eyes it had, it had as many whiskers that were like metallic wires that hung like thick ropes.
Not only that... But due to the size of this... This thing...
They couldn't see past its horrific face that remained still and unmoving.
The only thing that wasn't moving was its sharp fingers that scratched at the edges of the metal ceiling.
The sounds of its scratches gripped each individual heart of the workers below—fear causing their hearts to skip several beats as their breathing became shallow.
They didn't dare breathe too loudly. They didn't dare to breathe in too deeply.
They didn't dare to do anything that could cause the terror above them to react.
For although it had yet to do anything, they knew that... They would be dead in mere moments if one of them moved.
The man stared up, resisting the urge to both shiver and tense the muscles on his face. He fearfully tightened his hold on the rim of his helmet.
They just needed to wait for the mages outside to come in and rescue them.
They definitely can, right?
...
Unfortunately, he wouldn't be able to know the outcome of that, for one of his colleagues had suddenly turned and run.
The colleague screamed out:
"I-I CAN'T DO THIS!"
However, before he could get far, one of the whiskers of the abomination shot towards him with blurring speed, piercing through his chest.
The fearful worker spat out blood as he watched the whisker wrap around his body, pulling him up towards the beast that opened its mouth slightly.
His eyes shot wide open as he wriggled his legs.
"N-no! P-please... PLEASE! I don't wanna go yet! PLEASE SOMEONE—"
Once the upper half of his body entered the horror's maw, it slowly closed on the man, causing his last words to come out strained and distorted as his cries escaped.
Crunch... Crunch... Crunch...
The workers watched this happen with trembling eyes as they listened to the sounds of the monster's chewing.
And as they watched their colleague's lower half drop to the ground with a wet... And cold thud... All sense of rationality left their bodies as panic overwhelmed their mind.
They needed to live. That was the thought each of them had.
However, right as they scattered towards the exit of the tunnel, the whiskers of the monster shot out like living entities.
Soon enough, the same scene happened. The same crunching noise echoed.
And...
It was only after all but one had been eaten that the mages happened to have arrived.
