Chapter 336: Flashback To a Blood-Stained Assassin?
A few days had passed since the Cult of Jester's terrorising.
And in the span of those few days, a large funeral was held for all of the students, staff, and workers who had lost their lives in the Invasion.
'Well, going to be held soon...'
Lillian wiped the sweat on her forehead with the back of her hand before looking around her surroundings.
Her eyes scanned the countless workers who were helping with removing the rubble. This was the Restoration department, and she happened to be volunteering.
And because of that, she had even been given a construction uniform.
She looked around some more and found even some members of the Crimson Crusaders helping out.
They needed to get these out of the way before holding the funeral.
She glanced towards a large metal trolley that was filled with ruined debris, ranging from cracked stone bricks to charred wooden planks. And currently, it was filled halfway.
Since her fight with Thalrek, she had noticed a dramatic increase in her strength, most likely due to her constant regeneration of her muscles.
Flexing her right bicep, she then felt a strong pull from her left wrist.
Looking down, she stared at the metal handcuff wrapped around her wrist. She smiled wryly as she looked at who it was attached to.
What she found was a tall and stunning woman with long black hair and red eyes. Her attire consisted of a safety vest and orange gloves as well as a construction helmet.
It was Marionette. And she was giving Lillian a rather cold and unmerciful look.
"This area is clear now. Let's move somewhere else."
Lillian's face twitched. Marionette still wasn't quite happy with her, despite it having been a few days since the incident.
And as she thought about it, she slowly remembered back to what happened...
***
Once Lillian had finally calmed down, she took a step through the portal. But that was only before returning all of her gear and the Beetle back to their respective stored places.
After returning to the Academy Realm, she took a look up at the sky, finding a nightmarish creature that spanned hundreds of metres wide devouring a dying sun.
Lillian shivered, feeling an unnatural fear fall upon her body after gazing at the creature—one of the effects of a person's Aberration form.
"The Saint's Ascendra is... Way scarier in person..."
She breathed a sigh.
'Luckily... His mental fortitude is strong enough to resist the Corruption. Or else, I think we'll all be dead...'
She looked up towards the sky, finding the rifts to have disappeared. Before she had left, she had disabled the rifts, so there shouldn't be any more anytime soon.
She then took a look at her surroundings before grimacing. The area was so destroyed that even she found it hard to know where she was.
She sighed again, rubbing her eyes, which were still a bit red.
"I can't wait to get back into my bed..."
Due to her fight and all of her crying, she was entirely spent...
As her guard was down, she felt a terrifying gaze fall upon her person. She immediately stiffened and looked towards the sun, finding the Saint still busy devouring it.
Did he spot her? Or was what she felt something else?
She didn't know, and she didn't particularly want to know.
'If I remember correctly, there should be a hole to the underground shelter... Maybe Marionette and everyone else is there...'
She was also sure the Realm should be safe by now, since the Crimson Crusaders had arrived.
She looked at the ground, finding bodies of cultists strewn everywhere. And their injuries were rather... Brutal... Something that wouldn't come from a typical Crimson Crusader's fighting style.
'How strong were they again...? I think I read in some databooks that just two of them are able to kill a single Dire Wretch with just their hands.'
Crimson Crusaders were essentially bio-engineered humans created by the church with high physical stats at the cost of most of their emotional intelligence.
'I should get going now...'
As Lillian turned around, she was immediately met with something that widened her eyes.
It was a knight. And more precisely, a knight stained in crimson.
A helmet that had a narrow visor that was too small to look through. It was covered in blood, as though the person inside used it to headbutt someone to death.
A chestplate with scales and jagged edges that were also covered in blood and carried flesh tissues.
They also had gauntlets. Clawed gauntlets, which made it easier to rip through whatever enemy they faced. And as the pattern continued, it too was dripping in blood.
This person behind her... Was like a knight that had climbed its way out of a well of blood.
Lillian's eyes shook.
'W-what the hell...? This wasn't in the game...'
This person wasn't a Crimson Crusader either!
As Lillian was in a state of shock, she watched as the knight's armour suddenly began to disappear. And what was revealed was a tall woman with long black hair and red eyes.
Completely covered in blood from head to toe...
"L-... Lillian..."
Lillian widened her eyes, baffled by what she was seeing.
"M-Marionette!?"
The Assassin stumbled over to Lillian before quickly wrapping her arms around the girl, pulling the Rabbit's face into her chest.
Lillian, still stunned, felt the tightening of the woman's arm around her body as they placed their face on the top of her head.
"W-why are you—"
"... Where were you...?"
"Huh?"
Lillian paused at the sound of the woman's shaky voice as they hugged her even tighter. She sighed as she watched her clothes get stained, but she hugged back nonetheless.
"I, uh... Went somewhere, you know?"
"..."
"O-Ow... M-Mari... You're hugging a bit too tight now, hehe..." Lillian giggled nervously.
The atmosphere then became deafeningly silent and filled with tension.
So much so that... Lillian felt the need to make some small talk.
"S-so... What are you doing all the way out h-here, beautiful~? What's with the blood? Haha..."
The thought of asking Marionette a different question flashed through her mind. But... She was too embarrassed to ask that specific question.
"... That was all you had to say?" Marionette asked in a low and chilling tone.
Right as Lillian was about to answer, she felt the woman's hand move to the back of her skull before holding it in a tight clutch.
She winced, "H-hey... I'm kind of hurt over here... Why not be a little gentler with me—"
As she finished her sentence, she paused and stiffened as the Assassin lowered their lips to her left ear and hissed in a cold tone.
"Never. Again. Do you understand? From this moment on... You can't leave me without permission..."
Lillian gaped at this shocking demand.
She immediately pushed her face back to get a look at the woman's face. Wasn't this absurd?!
Just because she left her behind without telling her where she was going, she was now being punished like some child who ran away from home?
"W-wait, hold on. That ain't fair—"
But as soon as she lifted her head from the woman's blood-stained clothes, the sides of her head were immediately placed in between the Assassin's hands,
Lillian instantly became silent as Marionette kept a firm and tight grip on her head.
After glancing at the woman's hands, she slowly drifted her gaze to the woman's eyes, finding them to be gleaming a piercing blood-red light that immediately caused her to stand up straight.
Marionette, giving Lillian a threatening glare, opened her mouth and said in a cold voice that caused the air to drop several degrees:
"Do. You. Under—. Stand?"
Lillian, seeing that there was no way of convincing the woman...
Gulped.
"Y-yes, Ma'am..."
***
Lillian tilted her body, finding Marionette's trolley already filled, even double the height of what it had been when she had left it.
"S-say... I already said I was sorry..." Lillian scratched the skin underneath the handcuff, "How about we lose these? They're a bit uncomfortabl—"
"Too bad. Deal with it, Lillian."
"B-but—"
"No."
Lillian was then dragged towards another site. She couldn't help but internally cry as she pulled along her trolley.
She then couldn't help but murmur quietly under her breath:
"D-did she develop a possessive tendency towards me or something...?"
Marionette, who was looking forward, glanced beside her, staring at Lillian with a cold look before asking:
"Did you say something?"
Lillian immediately straightened herself and responded:
"N-nope!"
Marionette nodded.
"I see..."
Lillian, seeing the Assassin turn away again, gave a small sigh as she could feel her imaginary tears start to become a reality.
'Why am I being the one punished...?'
She then felt a hand land on the top of her head. And as she looked to the side, she found it belonged to her mother, who was freed from Marionette's dark pocket dimension.
At first, her mother was rather confused about what had happened, even feeling like she had just woken up from a very long sleep. Of course, she was immediately told what had gone on.
"Don't be so down, dear~... She's just being overprotective of you~."
"Huh!? But, I'm being pulled against my will here—!"
Lillian then stiffened as she felt Marionette's gaze settle on her again.
She shivered as she turned back and found the woman frowning at her with a displeased look in her eyes.
The Assassin then repeated:
"Against your will?" Before asking in a dangerous tone, "Are you suggesting that you would rather be somewhere else, Lillian?"
Her words left Lillian covered in sweat as she tried to come up with a response.
"W-wha... O-of course not—" And just as she was about to finish her response, she sighed in relief at the sight of Millis running over to them with a trolley of her own.
