Chapter 67 - I
After straightening up, Shi Liu quickly withdrew from Shi Wu’s arms, blushing and whispered his thanks and sorry. Feeling a bit frustrated, he also shot a glare at Shi Wu and then turned to leave.
Shi Wu touched his nose and watched the retreating figure. He couldn’t help but wonder if he had been too playful.
“No, but that’s what I read on those scripts.” he muttered to himself.
In terms those scripts, it was written like ‘the moment the young shuanger laid eyes on the man’s muscular physique, his heart raced with excitement, captivated both physically and emotionally. No matter how hard he tried to resist, it seemed futile.’
He scratched the back of his head, and suddenly, a cool breeze swept by. His skin tightened, and he shivered, wrapping his clothes tightly.
‘The weather is still a bit cold in February and March. Otherwise, when summer arrives, he’ll flaunt his shirtless body, displaying his strong muscles for Xiao Liu. He’ll surely fall for him.’ Shi Wu mused.
.
Shi Liu entered the bathroom, his face still flushed. He took a cold, damp handkerchief and pressed it against his cheeks, which only lessened their redness slightly.
He couldn’t help but recall the time when a matchmaker had come to their house, only to be turned away by his eldest brother. Later, his eldest brother had pulled him aside and quietly inquired if he wanted to marry and revealing his true-life story.
Shi Liu had known about his background since he was a child, as he had been treated poorly by his third aunt in the village. She often scolded him and belittled him, reminding him of his origins. It was his third brother who always comforted him.
However, he never thought much of it, as long as he could be with his third brother and the others, it would be fine. He knew that both his third and eldest brothers cared deeply for him.
But when Shi Mo admitted that Shi Wu had felt guilty for his parents’ death and had determined to marry him from a young age, it shocked the young shuanger. The fourth brother, now around twenty-eight, had yet to marry. While the war had been a factor, it should not have been difficult for him to find a wife.
Rumors suggested that the girls in Dongzhou were more beautiful than those in Zhongzhou, and now that the fourth brother had become a general and won many battles, there were likely many admirers. But the man was still waiting for more than a decade to marry him left Shi Liu feeling a bit warm.
After a quick shower and cleaning his soiled clothes, he hung them in the yard to dry. As he headed back to rest, he stopped in front of his door, and suddenly, the adjacent room’s door opened.
Shi Wu, wearing a black robe didn’t expose his chest this time. He held a fiery red coral hairpin in his hand and extended it to Shi Liu.
“I bought this a few days ago. I think it suits you very well.”
The hairpin was indeed beautiful, and Shi Liu didn’t hesitate to accept it. His delicate white fingers contrasted sharply with the fiery red coral. In the moonlight’s reflection, his stunning face was breathtaking, leaving people breathless.
Shi Liu thanked him softly and, for a while, heard no sound. He looked up to see a faint glint in Shi Wu’s eyes, like a hungry wolf, which was somewhat unsettling.
Shi Liu’s heart raced, and he took a few steps back out of fear. He began to question the statement about waiting for a decade. The look in Shi Wu’s eyes seemed to suggest he wanted to devour him now.
Seeing Shi Liu’s fear, Shi Wu suddenly snapped out of it, coughed, and discreetly cursed himself. He offered, “It’s getting late. Get some rest early,” and before Shi Liu could respond, the man walked back to his own room.
.
The next morning, as Shi Liu got dressed, he noticed the fiery red coral hairpin on the dressing table. After a moment of hesitation, he placed it in his hair.
Upon opening the door, he came face to face with Shi Wu, who was standing outside.
Shi Wu had donned a special black and gold sleeved robe today, which accentuated his tall and imposing figure.
When Shi Wu spotted the coral hairpin in Shi Liu’s hair, his eyes brightened, and he offered a warm smile.
“Good morning. How about I take you out to visit the county today?” Shi Wu suggested.
Shi Liu shook his head in refusal. He had explored the county extensively, and there was nothing that particularly interested him.
Observing his fourth brother’s attentiveness, Shi Liu thought that today was the perfect opportunity to head to the mountains and pick wild mushrooms for soup. The recent spring rain had created ideal conditions for mushroom growth, and with their combined effort, they could gather plenty.
“Why don’t you come up the mountain with me later? We can gather mushrooms and make soup when we return.” Shi Liu proposed.
“Alright, I’ll join you up the mountain.” Shi Wu agreed with enthusiasm.
No matter what activities they did, their time together could strengthen their bond, and over time, Xiao Liu would undoubtedly fall in love with him.
After breakfast, Shi Wu promptly readied his backpack.
The others in the household didn’t question his actions. Hong Luo, who had been planning to go up the mountain, discreetly returned to the backyard to assist her mother with embroidery work.
Aunt Hong glanced at her daughter, elegant and a few years older than Xiao Liu, with growing concern. She hadn’t yet revealed her daughter’s thought, even though they had received marriage proposals.
While most of them came from farming families, Aunt Hong was determined to find a suitable match for her daughter. However, she was well aware that Hong Luo’s unique upbringing, a woman with powerful martial skills, made it challenging to find a suitable match.
Hong Luo had made attempts to communicate with a few families, but the bizarre and eccentric elders of those households had almost driven her to her wit’s end.
There was a cheap man willing to marry her but he insulted her background and called her a poor slave, saying it was a great blessing for him to marry her. This made Hong Luo so angry that she attacked the man on the spot.
Following that incident, a negative reputation began to circulate in the village, causing people to avoid visiting her home.
Hong Luo didn’t mind the lack of marriage proposals. Her mother had spent a significant portion of her life at Master Pei’s house, enjoying comfort and prosperity. Hong Luo could also make money by writing storybooks, ensuring a comfortable life for herself. Marriage would inevitably involve serving her in-laws, which she had no interest in.
When she shared her thoughts with Aunt Hong, her mother contemplated it for a while and eventually stopped pressuring her.
Note:
The author wrote the war very short so it was easy to assume it only happened in two or five years. But from the scales of many tribes involved, I think a whole decade war is the right timeline.
Counting Shi Wu’s age as well. He is twenty-eight now while Shi Liu is around sixteen or eighteen. First chapter Shi Liu was only five years old, so more than ten years had passed since Shi Wu was gone from Shi family’s house.
In case someone forgot, Shi Liu and Shi Wu are not related. Shi Liu’s parents died and he got adopted by Shi Yi and Shi Wu’s parents
