Chapter 60: Auction 1
"Wow…" Clara whispered, staring at the crater and then at the spear in her hand with a mixture of fear and profound admiration for her new ability.
Kael, who had put a safer distance between himself and Clara's explosive experiments, discreetly checked his system. A faint smile touched his lips as he read the notifications
[Ding!]
[Main Character: Clara Winslet's [Trust] towards the Extra: Kael Vi-rel has significantly increased!]
[Ding!]
[Main Character: Clara Winslet's [Reliance] on the Extra: Kael Vi-rel has deepened!]
Well, that's good news, he thought. Building trust with the protagonist is crucial. He scanned for any other changes, a small part of him curious. But her affection didn't rise at all. It stings the pride a little, but this is probably normal for a guy like me who just acts as a support character. He mentally shrugged. It was better this way. Less complicated.
His attention shifted back to the other side of the rooftop. "Hmm, it looks like Selene is now able to control her new skill quite well. She can reach that height now…"
He watched as Selene leaped to the very pinnacle of a nearby spire, landing as softly as a falling leaf. She stood there for a moment, a silhouette against the dying sun, before turning. Her eyes found his across the distance, and she gave him a small, almost shy smile. It was a look of pure, unadulterated joy and gratitude.
Huh, Kael thought, a strange feeling stirring in his chest. For a moment, he felt an unexpected connection, a shared understanding that transcended words. Shaking it off, he began to think about their next steps. Well, I should probably start planning our next move
[Ding!]
The sudden notification cut through his thoughts, sharp and unexpected. What is this?
[Ding!]
[Supporting Character: Selene Whitmore's [Interest] in the Extra: Kael Vi-rel has exceeded a critical threshold!]
[Ding!]
[Selene Whitmore's status towards you has evolved! [Interest] has transformed into [Affection]!]
[Ding!]
[Selene Whitmore's [Trust] in you has reached the state of Absolute. This bond is now irreversible.]
Kael froze, the world narrowing to the glowing blue text in his vision. His mind went utterly blank, a cold dread mixed with utter confusion washing over him. He stared at the notifications, reading them again and again, but the words didn't change.
"What the hell is this again?" he whispered to the empty air, his voice barely audible.
Kael Vi-rel leaned against the cool concrete of the rooftop, the chaotic energy from Clara's unstable spear still humming in the air. He ran a hand through his hair, wiping away a thin sheen of nervous sweat from his brow. The system notifications about Selene were still flashing in his mind's eye, a confusing and alarming puzzle he had no idea how to solve.
"Yeah, you can do as you like,"
A familiar, cheerful voice chimed in his head, cutting through his exhaustion.
[Master Kael Vi-rel, your schedule indicates that it is now time for the auction appointment.]
Kael groaned, the very thought of moving feeling like a monumental task. The mental and physical drain of the past few days was catching up to him. He was currently sprawled on his bed, face down in his pillow, savoring the blissful embrace of near-slumber.
He yawned, his body feeling as heavy as lead. "Just five more minutes, Hay…" he mumbled into the fabric.
[Negative, Master,] the AI responded, its tone relentlessly upbeat. [Your designated rest period has concluded. Your appointment at the Danon Auction House is in less than an hour. Arise before I am forced to implement… motivational protocols.]
"Go away…" Kael grumbled, pulling the blanket over his head, ready to sink back into the comforting darkness.
He heard a faint whirring sound from the corner of the room. A moment later, Hay's voice chirped again, this time from the physical drone unit hovering near his bedside table.
[Motivational Protocol: Hydro-Dynamic Stimulation, initiated.]
A robotic arm extended from the drone, tipping a large jug of ice water. A cold, shocking cascade splashed directly onto Kael's head, soaking his hair, his pillow, and the back of his shirt.
"Ha—!" Kael shot up, sputtering and shivering from the abrupt, icy deluge. The last vestiges of sleep were violently eradicated. He glared at the hovering drone, which blinked its single blue light at him innocently.
"Fine! Fine! I'm up!" he growled, reluctantly swinging his legs out of the drenched bed. "Let's just go."
DANON AUCTION HOUSE
The building was an architectural marvel of gleaming obsidian and gold, an imposing facade that screamed wealth and power. It wasn't just a place of business; it was a temple dedicated to the art of the transaction, the world's biggest, if not the largest, auction network with branches in every major city. This place didn't just sell rare artifacts and powerful weapons; they also sold Cube Kits with intricate, completed patterns items that could elevate a Creator's career overnight.
Kael Vi-rel stepped down from the public transport bus, melting into the diverse crowd flowing toward the grand entrance. Inside, the main hall was even more opulent. A massive crystal chandelier hung from a vaulted ceiling, casting a dazzling rainbow of light across the marble floors. Hunters in rugged combat gear walked alongside mages in elegant robes and merchants in impeccably tailored suits. The air was thick with the scent of money and the quiet hum of ambition.
Even though I'm only here for a private appraisal, the atmosphere makes you want to bid on something valuable, Kael thought, suppressing another yawn. "I am so tired and sleepy. My schedule is too much."
His eyes scanned the bustling lobby for a place to sit. He spotted an empty chair in a quiet corner just as its previous occupant, a stern-looking woman in knight's armor, stood up to leave. He quickly navigated the crowd and gratefully sank into the plush seat.
Thank goodness I have Hay to keep me on track, or I'd never make it to these appointments, he mused, leaning his head back. Now, I just have to be watchful. I need to make sure I don't run into anyone I know, especially Damon Reid.
