Chapter 2
As usual, I sat in class, absentmindedly fiddling with my phone, my textbook open in front of me, occasionally glancing out the window.
The cherry blossoms of April had long since fallen, leaving the university grounds looking a little barren.
There was nothing particularly interesting to see, but I suppose I just enjoyed spacing out. For some reason, my mind always wandered, and I found myself staring outside without really thinking.
And then, something happened.
An elderly man was walking his dog.
“Now that I think about it, I never realized before entering university that the locals actually use the campus as a shortcut.”
As I was idly entertaining such trivial thoughts, the old man suddenly collapsed.
“Whoa, seriously!?”
Growing up in the countryside, surrounded by and doted on by elderly people, there was no way I could just ignore what I had just seen.
To make matters worse, the dog ran off.
Or rather, instead of running away, it just left its owner behind and continued its stroll on its own.
“Double trouble!!!”
Without hesitation, I slipped out of the lecture hall through the back door, heading first for the dog.
Someone else could help the fallen man, but chances were, no one would think to go after his dog.
Fortunately, animals seemed to take a liking to me, and as soon as I stepped outside, the dog came right over.
With the dog in tow, I hurried back to the old man—who was still on the ground.
“Wait, this is actually bad, isn’t it?”
I called out to him.
“Sir! Are you okay!? Can you hear me!?”
No response.
Realizing how serious this could be, I immediately dialed for an ambulance.
I spotted a male student a little ways off and called him over, quickly explaining the situation and instructing him to fetch an AED.
As my heart pounded from the unexpected gravity of the situation, I was relieved that I had at least paid attention during the emergency training session for my driver’s license.
Following the dispatcher’s instructions over the phone, I did my best to provide first aid until, at last, the ambulance arrived.
I rode along with the paramedics to the hospital, a rare moment where I actually worried about missing a lecture. But, well, that could be dealt with later.
In the ambulance, they asked me all sorts of questions, but there wasn’t much I could answer.
Before long, the old man’s condition stabilized. The doctors confirmed that his life was not in danger.
Only after he had undergone various tests and received a clean bill of health did I finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Just as I was about to leave, I was told that the man had regained consciousness and wished to thank me personally.
I had no reason to refuse, so I went to see him.
“Excuse me,” I said, stepping into the hospital room.
“Oh! So you’re Kirishima-kun! Thank you for saving me.
I have a heart condition, so if you hadn’t helped me back there, things could have taken a very bad turn.
I’m truly grateful that I didn’t end up dying at my own alma mater. Thank you.”
His unexpectedly lively demeanor caught me off guard.
“Oh, you graduated from Handai? That makes you a senior then. As your junior, I’m honored to have been of assistance.
I’m glad I could help. Please take care of yourself.”
“By the way, I haven’t introduced myself yet. My name is Nakamura Yoshihide. I run a company, actually.
As a token of my gratitude, I’d like to offer you something. But to be honest, I have no idea what young people like these days.
Please, don’t hesitate to ask for anything.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m sure anyone in that situation would have done the same thing and helped you, Nakamura-san.
But, if you insist… how about a meal? I’m just a poor university student, and it’s been ages since I’ve had a proper meal.”
Even I thought I was being pretty shameless for casually asking for food.
“That’s exactly how young people should be! Alright then, I’ll treat you to something delicious.
I’ll get in touch later to set a date. Does that work for you?”
“Yes! I’d love that! Please take care of yourself.”
“Indeed. I’m not young anymore, so I’ll do my best not to trouble you youngsters too much. Haha.”
“I’m really looking forward to the meal! Take care, and see you soon.”
As I left the hospital room, I glanced down at the business card Nakamura-san had handed me.
Smiling to myself at the thought of a free meal, I walked out, already looking forward to it.
