Chapter 59 - Shit, this must be the legendary berserk mode... Final boss form!
'Perhaps this is due to the factor of purification from sins and sinners that the flame has? Like it or not, this rat is a monster with only the thought of killing, eating, fighting and cycle repeats. Just as I purified the other rats as sinners, purifying this Super Boss would not be impossible either... Wait... He is a Super Boss! Perhaps he is considered to be a worse monster, or something like a more terrible sinner, so the cleansing effect becomes more powerful against him? In a simpler word he indeed supposed to have more sins after all to level up one need to kill and to kill is to commit evil despite how humans flip it and say for the better good'
While thinking about this possibility, Zach started to come up with a plan, a plan where he would be able to take advantage of his flame's power to increase the team's chances of victory against this Super Monster without going head on against it.
Even while Zach was thinking, he didn't stop moving around, as those standing still basically ended up easy targets. Even if the King of the Rats was focusing his attacks on the Blessed ones who fought him in melee, Zach would not risk standing like a post only to have the Super Boss suddenly target him even though the chances of it killing him was low but who knows what these humans will do to him if he dies or get injured here?
As he moved and occasionally threw a fireball with his left hand, his right hand flexed, claws extending like sharpened blades ready to tear through flesh the moment it tries attacking him all of a sudden. He had no need for weapons forged by human hands—his own demonic claws were enough to shred a dungeon beast.
While Zach was looking for a perfect opportunity, the Super Boss feinted toward a big man holding a shield but suddenly turned to a teenage girl striking with her sword. Before the inexperienced Blessed could even process what was happening, the Super Boss sank its fangs into her wrist as though biting into soft bread. Her forearm split apart in an instant, her sword-hand vanishing into the monster's jaws.
"AMYYYY!!!!!" Wendy screamed from the rear, her voice cracking as she saw her friend's arm ripped away like nothing. She might still have been angry at Amy for blocking her chance to speak with Zach, but not to the point of wishing her friend such a brutal fate.
In blind panic, Wendy broke formation and ran forward to help Amy, who was shrieking as blood poured from the stump of her arm.
The King of Rats, sharp eyes locking onto fresh prey, did not miss this chance. He gulped down Amy's severed limb and opened his maw wide, aiming to crush Wendy's head in a single bite.
A breath away from the creature's fangs, Wendy froze. All fight drained from her as she realized her mistake. Death wasn't just possible now, it was certain with how close she was to it. Instead of struggling, she simply accepted it and shut her eyes tight.
The other Blessed screamed in horror, despair gripping them. Their only healer was about to die, and none of them were fast enough to save her and they could already foresee the battle ahead with them getting injured more and more to the point they finally got defeated without a healer.
But just as Wendy felt the foul, steaming breath of the Rat King wash over her, she opened her eyes slightly and saw a crimson-skinned, clawed hand reached into her vision, larger and stronger than any human's, its palm stretched open. In the next instant, hellfire ignited from Zach's hand, launching a blazing orb straight into the Rat King's gaping maw. The heat licked Wendy's cheeks, scorching close enough to sting before the flame even left his palm.
When the King of Rats realized another figure had rushed in, he thought he was about to claim two heads in a single strike. But instead of snapping jaws around soft flesh, pain exploded inside him. That same detested flame, the one that had burned him before, now tore down his throat.
The Rat King had no chance to close his mouth in time. The fire coursed down, burning through his tongue, his throat, his chest—searing everything inside. The agony was so fierce that the beast screamed, a shrill, deafening cry that shook the chamber and made weaker Blessed quake in terror.
From the monster's perspective, it was as if it was being consumed alive for endless minutes, though in reality the hellfire burned through him in barely two seconds.
While the King of Rats writhed and shrieked, Zach wrapped one strong, crimson arm around Wendy's waist and yanked her back without asking or caring what she thought. She was too important to waste—every seasoned adventurer knew the healer must survive above all else. A healer meant hope. With a healer, even the maimed could fight again. Without one, the team was as good as corpses waiting to rot.
The Rat King's screams shook the chamber, but the rest of the Blessed finally shook off their paralysis as they unleashed their fury on the monster.
Arrows flew, swords slashed, spells thundered. Even Harry with his face pale, hurled shards of sharpened ice that cut through patches of the Rat King's tough hide. A Rank D Blessing was not to be underestimated, his control over ice already far surpassed what any fresh Rank F Blessed could manage due to having higher level of talent.
The damage piled on.
When at last the Rat King recovered, the change was immediate and terrifying. The blackness in his eyes bled into a glowing crimson, blood-hunger blazing in its depths. The creature's intent was clear, it wanted to slaughter them all, and at the very top of its kill list was Zach.
Meeting that glare, Zach instantly thought of famous things he usually experience inside video games back in his past life. Instinctively, he muttered, "Shit, this must be the legendary berserk mode... Final boss form!"
