Chapter 136: Waging A Hand
Alex stood up and said calmly:
"It does not matter if you do not believe in me. But I know a little bit about praying for rain. The best time to pray for rain is at noon two days from now. If nothing unexpected happens, the rain will come as i expect it."
One lie required countless lies to cover it up.
Alex had now committed himself to prove this statement true.
But it was just fine for him too.
Praying for rain was actually very simple by his means. He just needed to buy a few raining shells in the modern world and fire a few rain shells to make it rain.
Modern world has developed in so much that now it does not have to beg to God for rain.
Praying for rain was such a simple thing to him, Alex couldn't help but feel mused by it.
Ever since he had been able to travel to Ironhold, Alex had thought that the fastest way to solve the drought in Ironhold was to create artificial rainfall and let it rain for days and nights.
Slowly all lakes and ponds will filled up to use by the people of the city.
Slowly but surely, the gloomy famine ridden city would be able to shed his gloomy look by his hands.
To this end, he had also done some special research to achieve it.
In modern times, there were five methods of artificial rainfall: airplanes, small rockets loaded with silver iodide, anti-aircraft artillery, ground combustion furnaces, and specialized equipment.
Alex first ruled out the airplane and the rocket methods.
Not to mention where to buy an airplane or rocket, it was even a question of whether the plane could fly in this world.
After all don't know what laws are still working here.
Alex has ample knowledge of time travelers that he knew that each transmigrated world has it own laws and rules.
While he didn't know the mechanics behind the flight of a aeroplane but he knew enough of it that, even a slight error on any of the factors might result in a catastrophic crash.
Not to mention he didn't know how to fly a aeroplane.
After ruling out the first two optins available to him what was left was the ground combustion furnace, Alex had to also ruled it out.
The ground combustion furnace, as the name suggested, was a furnace set up on the ground to burn a catalyst containing silver iodide. The substance caused the clouds to react, thus achieving the effect of rainfall.
But this approach had two serious flaws.
First, it could only be used in clouds with updrafts.
Second, it could only be used locally and the rainfall range was severely limited.
Therefore, the remaining anti-aircraft artillery rainfall method was the most suitable for use in Ironhold.
"What?!"
"He said he could make it rain in the city!"
The people present burst into an uproar filled with shock!
If someone else had said that he could pray for rain, they would definitely sneer and think that person was lying and coning the people without shame.
But the same words from Alex's mouth were different!
After all, this young man had found the bandit's hideout that even the County Magistrate could not find at first.
Maybe this Young Master Alex can really pray for rain?!
"Is it true that Young Master Alex said he could pray for rain?"
"I do not know, but I think it might be entirely possible."
"What if it is true? Young Master Alex could even find a bandit's hideout."
"It would be wonderful if it were true. Alas, with the severe drought for years, I can hardly rent out my land anymore."
Everyone was talking excitedly amongst themselves.
Patriarch McCoy was also shocked by his claim.
His expression changed, and he could not help but ask aloud: "Young Master Alex, is this truly serious?"
Alex nodded firmly. "I am serious."
"Haha, what a joke! You can actually pray for rain? This is utterly ridiculous! The reason you said you can pray for rain in two days is probably because you want to give yourself some time to escape and run away from Ironhold, is it not?"
Henrik sneered as if he had already seen through Alex's supposed intentions.
Hehe. This person must be in league with the bandits. Otherwise, how could he possibly find the bandits' hideout?
Now that I have exposed you, you still dare to say that you can pray for rain?
Miss Evelyn, I pursued you so hard, but you did not agree. I did not expect you to fall for this kind of thief. It is too disappointing.
Henrik shook his head and looked at Miss Evelyn with a look of false pity.
Miss Evelyn's beautiful face was filled with dissatisfaction. There was anger between her brows. "Henrik, you are judging others by your own low standards. Young Master Alex has made such a great contribution to Ironhold. Why are you still questioning him so viciously?"
Henrik sneered back. "Questioning? I just do not want the people of Ironhold to be deceived by those with ulterior motives."
"You..."
Henrik had always positioned himself on the moral high ground thinking he was always right no matter what.
Miss Evelyn could not refute him for a moment.
Shocked in his heart, Sheriff Bowen looked at Alex and said with utmost seriousness: "Young Master Alex, can you really pray for rain? I need a definite and clear answer from you."
"Yes." Alex nodded confidently. "If the County Sheriff is worried that I will escape, you can seal the gates of Ironhold for the next two days and not let anyone enter or leave."
"Very well, then I will do as you say. I will send people to block the city gates for the next two days." Sheriff Bowen's face showed no visible change.
"I am doing this for the benefit of the people of this city. If Young Master Alex successfully prays for rain then you can rest assured I will personally recommend you to the County Magistrate for the title of County Advisor.
I believe that if you are successful in praying for rain, the County Magistrate will also be happy to agree. But if you fail to pray for rain, I can only handle the matter impartially and ask Young Master Alex to come to the government office for proper investigation."
Sheriff Bowen was worthy of being the second in command of Ironhold. He played his political strategy quite skillfully and clearly fully knowing that he was in wrong asking him to do what he think might be entirely impossible for a normal person so that is why he also provided him a bait hoping he would catch it.
"What?!"
The crowd was in an uproar again!
The people present were all powerful figures in Ironhold, and they knew far too well the immense value of the title of County Advisor.
A County Advisor was the highest level private consultant that the County Magistrate could hire.
Such a person could participate in all matters including judicial affairs and taxation.
If Alex could really become a County Advisor, this position would be no less powerful than the second in command County Sheriff himself!
"What a ridiculous joke! Stop fooling the County Sheriff. Do you think you can pray for rain? County Sheriff, listen to me. It is best to take this kind of thief to jail and torture him until he confesses!" Henrik clasped his fists towards Sheriff Bowen and laughed coldly with contempt.
At that time seeing how much of a eyesore he is becoming Patriarch of the McCoy family, Edmund McCoy couldn't help but meddle in it and lay trap.
"Why do you insist on holding onto Young Master Alex so relentlessly? What if Young Master Alex successfully prays for rain? What can you wager that he cannot make it rain?"
"Haha, if he can pray for rain! I, Henrik, am willing to wager eight thousand taels of gold!"
Henrik smiled triumphantly and took out eight banknotes from his pocket.
The Henrik family was the largest medicinal herb merchant in Ironhold. The eight thousand taels of gold were given to Henrik by the head of the Henrik family to purchase medicinal herbs from farmers.
At this moment, Henrik was being watched by everyone. With Patriarch McCoy provoking him, he immediately took out the eight banknotes as his wager.
The reason why he took out these eight banknotes was twofold.
Besides believing that Alex absolutely could not pray for rain, he also wanted to show off the financial resources of their Henrik family.
"Hiss~"
"As expected of the Henrik family, the richest family in Ironhold! They can actually put up eight thousand taels of gold as a wager!"
"I truly admire the Henrik family's financial generosity!"
The guests could not help but be shocked and talked amongst themselves.
Although they were also wealthy, they did not dare to squander money like Henrik did.
With everyone's sidelong glances of admiration, Henrik sneered at Alex with arrogance. "If you can pray for rain, these eight thousand taels of gold will be yours. But if you cannot pray for rain, hehe, how about cutting off one of your arms as payment to me?"
