Chapter 139: a reunion

A few days had passed since the dungeon appeared, and it seemed to have calmed down. Its dangerous aura was gone, which meant anyone could now enter it—even students from the Hero's Academy.

Dakota (thinking): Sigh... this dungeon is going to be dangerous. Probably the most dangerous thing we've faced so far—except for when we deal with Blazer and Fianna in the future. But the rewards are worth it. Abilities and skills... that's what we're after.

Abilities are things like, for example: " I have the ability to create a gun or control gravity. Skills are more like techniques in video games. The difference? Abilities and skills are easier to use. Once you acquire them, you instantly know how to use them. Magic takes training to master. Skills use the least mana, abilities use more, and magic takes the most. Each has its own benefits.

Dakota: "Alright, time to register for the dungeon. I already told the group... but I haven't told my family yet. Guess I should do that first."

Dakota went downstairs and found his family sitting at the dinner table.

Dakota: "Hey, I see you're all eating. Mind if I join you?"

Mother: "Of course not. Sit down, Dakota. I've prepared your plate already."

Dakota: "Thanks."

He sat down and began eating. A few minutes of silence passed before Dakota spoke.

Dakota: "...So, you've heard about the dungeon that appeared, right? Well... I'm planning to enter it with my group."

Everyone froze. His mother, father, and younger sister stopped eating and stared at him.

Mother: "What did you just say? You're entering that dungeon—the one they're saying is the most dangerous humanity has ever seen? Are you out of your mind?"

Emma: "Yeah! Are you insane, Dakota? You can't go into that dungeon—it's way too dangerous!"

Father: "...Are you sure about this, Dakota?"

Mother: "Don't even ask that question, honey! The answer should be no!"

His father ignored her, his eyes locked on Dakota with a serious expression.

Dakota: "...Yes, I'm sure. I have to go into that dungeon. No matter what."

Father: "Is it really that important to you?"

Dakota: "It is. You might not understand, but I have to get stronger."

Father: "You're already strong for your age. You could probably beat weaker high-ranked heroes without much trouble. Do you really need to push yourself further?"

His father's tone was calm but firm. Dakota met his gaze, unwavering.

Dakota: "Yes. I absolutely need to go into the dungeon. I have to get stronger. I'll also gain valuable experience in there."

Father: "...Fine. You can go."

Mother: "Honey! What are you—"

Father: "Don't worry. I'll join him in the dungeon to make sure he's safe. That way, you don't have to worry."

His mother sighed and looked down for a moment before speaking.

Mother: "...Fine. But only because you're going with him. If you weren't, I wouldn't allow it."

Dakota: "Thank you, Mother, for trusting me."

Mother: "I'm still regretting this. With your luck, Dakota, who knows what you'll encounter in there."

Dakota: "Don't worry. Only two people can beat Father—Fianna and Blazer. As long as they don't show up, I'll be fine."

Dakota (thinking): ...That is, as long as I don't get separated from him.

Emma: "Just promise you'll come back safe, okay?"

Dakota: "Of course I will. Actually, I'll conquer the entire dungeon. Who do you think I am? I'm the almighty Dakota Leal!"

The family laughed, and the mood lightened. After finishing his meal, Dakota met up with his group to register for the dungeon. They also signed a waiver stating the government wouldn't be responsible for their safety.

The next day, it was finally time to enter the dungeon.

Dakota: "Looks like it's not just my father coming along. You're joining us too, Franklin?"

Franklin: "Of course. I need to protect my precious daughter, after all."

Dakota: "Well, that's great. Two of the strongest heroes in history protecting us."

Franklin: "Finally, some respect from you. I was waiting for this day."

Dakota: "Don't get used to it. That's all you're getting."

Franklin frowned, and the group laughed, including Dakota's father.

Father: "Alright, it's time. Let's go, Dakota."

Dakota: "...Actually, you and Franklin can go in first. I need to take care of something."

Father: "Hmm? Alright. Let's go, Franklin."

The two entered the dungeon and disappeared into the first floor.

Henry: "Why did you send Duke and Franklin ahead?"

Dakota: "Come out from behind the tree. I know you're there. You tried to mask your aura so only I could sense it, didn't you?"

Three figures emerged, cloaked in black robes like dark mages.

??? (1): "Smart as always, Dakota. You haven't lost your edge."

Dakota: "What's that supposed to mean? Who the hell are you? We've never met before."

??? (1): "Oh, we've never met? Maybe if I remove my cloak, you'll remember me."

Dakota: "Even if you take off your cloak, I still won't recognize—"

The figure removed their hood. Dakota froze.

Dakota: "...No. No, it can't be."

??? (1): "Oh, but it is. Long time no see, Dakota."

The other two figures removed their cloaks as well. One of them leaned closer and whispered directly into Dakota's mind:

??? (2): "Or should I say... Michael."

Dakota's shocked expression quickly turned into one of pure rage.

Dakota: "You... DAMN... FUCKING BITCH! I'LL KILL YOU!"

His group flinched at the sheer fury in Dakota's voice. They had never seen him this angry before—not even when his sister had been kidnapped.

??? (1): "Now, now, Dakota. Is that any way to greet an old friend at a reunion?"

Dakota: "A reunion? I'll show you a reunion, you damn bitch!"

Dakota prepared to attack with his full power, but his group grabbed him and dragged him toward the dungeon.

Dakota: "What are you doing? Let me go! I need to kill them!"

Henry: "Calm down, Dakota. They're too strong to handle quickly, and there are too many people watching. Don't cause a scene."

The group entered the dungeon. Once inside, they released Dakota, who screamed in pure rage and slammed his fists into the ground.
